OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD 2019
Last year alone, Samaritan’s Purse delivered nearly 11 million Operation Christmas Child
shoeboxes to children around the world. These
simple gifts are used to have an impact and
change the lives of many boys and girls and their
families. It is easy to get involved and help
spread Good News and Great Joy.
Our shoebox celebration service is on
Sunday 17th November, at St Peter’s Church Boxted starting at 9.30am. We are also holding a
Shoebox Packing Party on Sunday 10th
November starting at 4pm again at St Peter’s. All are welcome to come along and find out more.
This year’s appeal sees a couple of key changes, following increased customs regulations we are
no longer able to include toothpaste or sweets
of any sort.
Empty flat packed shoeboxes are once again
available from the Langham Community Shop
priced at 50p each and this year your filled
shoebox can be dropped off there too.
Drop off locations are open the week beginning
11th November until our service on the 17th.
Other drop off locations include
Autumn House, Chapel Road, Langham,
McLaughlan’s Fruit Farm Boxted, both parish schools (Collection Date 18th November), or at
one of the services mentioned above.
For more details please contact Tim Clarke on
07792060597.

THOUGHTS FROM JO
Autumn is my favourite time of year because I love to see the leaves turn such beautiful colours and feel the crispness of the air. I also love cosy evenings curled up with my family. The turn of a season is a good time to remember what we are thankful for from the last season and what we hope for in the next one. What are you thankful for? What do you hope for?
Research shows that when we adopt an attitude of gratitude we are more likely to:
take better care of ourselves physically and mentally
get more regular exercise, eat more healthily and have better immune systems
cope better with stress and daily challenges
feel happier and more optimistic
maintain a brighter view of the future
Perhaps this is why God tells us to “be thankful in all circumstances”? (1 Thessa-lonians 5 v18). He knows how much we will benefit from it!
Maybe you could start a gratitude journal and write down what you are thankful for each week, or talk about what you are thankful for with your family and friends – see if it makes a difference in your life.
Finally, some information on our church Family Services: The 4 o’clock service is on the 2nd Sunday of each month. This term we have been exploring the life of King David and especially enjoyed making and defeating a 9ft tall Goliath!
November 10th will be our Remembrance service followed by a packing party for the
Christmas shoe box appeal. December 8 this is a Christmas superhero party looking at how King David is a Bible su-perhero. Come along and give it a try! We would love to see you there and
you will be made very welcome. The 9.30am Family service is on the 3rd Sunday of each month and includes a Eucharist service, led to a great extent by our children and youth, once a term.
Again, do come along to these and enjoy God with family and friends.
See you soon!

Harry Beardwell 1883—1917
Harry Beardwell was born in Boxted, the son of Henry and Esther Beardwell. The family moved shortly afterwards to live at Langham, in School Road, near Blacksmith’s Corner. After school Harry followed his Father’s calling as a horseman before joining the Army as in the Royal Army Medical Corps. Serving in the 29th General Hospital in the Salonika Campaign to defend Greece against the Austro-Hungarian, German and Bulgarian forces, he was killed on 4 March 1917 aged 33.
A few months ago, a friend of Langham visited Thessaloniki in Greece and a laid a Royal British Legion cross at Harry’s grave on behalf of the village.

LANGHAM LADIES
This months meeting was a talk by Deborah Brady on her career as a female photo journalist in Fleet Street for many years. Her first assignment after moving to London from Bristol to work was to change her life for ever. She photographed Michael Jackson on the tarmac arriving at Heathrow and it was an exclusive! She was never out of work again and in her job photographed numerous dignitaries, royals, sports personalities etc. There were also the more important events that she
immortalised on film such as the Clapham train crash, the M1 aeroplane crash and the Hungerford
massacre. Her photographs that were subsequently published in the national newspapers were headline news.
BOXTED HISTORY GROUP
Peter Regulous opened the groups winter programme of talk reprising his career in numerous jobs but mainly his 30 years on the stage as his alter-ego Peter King. Whilst completing various jobs in his spare time he performed with a small group of actors entertaining the residents of local care homes. This led to him being paid to perform in East End pubs and clubs whilst attending the London Academy of Dramatic Art. This opened the door to various job in films (usually as an extra) and in TV programmes including The Generation Game, Lovejoy and the Darling Buds of May.
