After quite an early start for those taking the train from down West, seven of us met up

with Miles from Platon for an enjoyable, scenic trip back in time on the Buckfast Steam Train from Totnes to Buckfastleigh. We had two hours to spare, so after lunch somewandered into the town, but there were several attractions around the railway – at thebutterfly farm we saw one emerge from its jewel-like chrysalis, exotic specimens flyingamongst tropical plants, and terrapins so static we thought they were plastic models untilone or two suddenly slid into the water. From there, on to watch the otters swim and play;and for those who really only came for the trains (!) a museum and a miniature railway. Our thanks to Pat for organising the day, and to Miles who, on behalf of Platon, paid ourentrance fees to see the butterflies and otters.

We were disappointed that so few were able to make it, and missed those that had wantedto join us but were prevented (especially Val who boarded our train at St Austell, heardshe was on a train to Glasgow, so jumped off!). We would welcome suggestions frommembers for outings or other social events – at the moment our events calendar runs outof steam after September!

August  – no meeting14 September  – We will be welcoming Plymouth Lary Club at Devoran for a soup and

sandwich lunch plus cakes, etc, to be followed by the joint meeting.Once again, we are delighted that Platon will be supporting us as Mileswill be there to talk about any new developments.

PLEASE let us know if you plan to join us as we need to have someIdea of numbers for the catering.

Coming up for discussion at our September meeting:

Should we set up a Speak Easy website?

Widening active membership – we could put Radio Cornwall on our events calendar(perhaps for October) and then ask them to give us a mention.

Hospital book service. Val has come up with the idea of delivering a selection of upto date books, preferably paperbacks (each with bookplate giving our Club nameand contact numbers) to the Ward. Collection and exchange of the selection could

be done in conjunction with her delivery of “goodybags”.

In June, Ron and Rosemary joined The Recovery Club for a most enjoyable meal at TheGodolphin, Marazion.

Fund raising:

Do you have any bric-a-brac, books, in fact anything except clothing, for our car bootsales? – Ron and Val are gathering items for Pool in August and Lostwithiel in September, but can arrange collection, otherwise please bring along for the September meeting. There are two folding tables (larger than pasting tables) available from Val if anyone else

would like to undertake other events for the Club.

Good news that Colin is feeling better - we look forward to seeing him back again.
