international standards such as IEC 61850 § Full testing and certification service for protocols
² Solar PV and storage market focus
Antitrust and Intellectual Property – Policy SunSpec Meeting Reminder
This is a SunSpec Open Public Webinar and Not A Normal Workgroup Meeting ² SunSpec workgroup meetings are conducted in accordance with
the SunSpec Antitrust Policy and Intellectual Property Provisions defined in the SunSpec Member Agreement and/or the SunSpec Limited Participant Agreement.
² Each participating company in a workgroup must have executed either one or the other of these agreements and all participants must comply with the policy and provisions.
² Confidential or proprietary information should not be discussed in workgroup session. Please contact SunSpec management if you have any questions.
Agenda and Speakers
² Inverter modular communication (MC) § Background § Problem statements
² Proposed solution - CTA 2045 communications module ² Discuss workgroup group startup mission/charter ² Recruit members and validate need ² Next Steps Speakers:
§ Tim Keating, SunSpec Alliance § Rolf Bienert, Technical Director, USNAP Alliance § Sebastian Hassell, Product Manager, Fronius
Inverter Communications Challenges R (Topic*) Discussions Template
² Open, modular communications for inverters are key for advanced grid service adoption and DER market growth
² Next-generation interconnect rules for distributed generation including CA Rule 21 and others intend to include communication capability…
² But… communication technologies are diverse across market sectors and best choices are uncertain
² And… Inverters have decades-long service lives, and communication technologies are evolving much faster
² And… It is uncertain when network connectivity to residential and commercial systems will need to be deployed
“Informa)on about energy will become almost as
important as energy itself”

DER Modular Communication Benefits
² Equipment manufacturers; i.g. inverters and communication modules: § Can capitalize on mass production driving down cost § Single interface for any platform (Cellular, ZigBee, Wi-Fi etc.) using SunSpec information models § Provides a certification platform for advanced grid feature control § Allows for end user/customer to customize communications platform, protocol, and security § Allows integration and interface with multiple demand response and home automation platforms
² Large integrators, small integrators and aggregators: § Allows a single standard or custom standard communications module for any inverter § Allows customized or standard backend platform development § Allows monitoring of inverter data, and control of advanced grid features § Simplified fleet management by the removal of tech obsolesce risk as technology changes
² Monitoring and aggregator companies: § Can customize modules to their services, and monitor/ control aggregated fleets § Can cater to the smaller installation companies by providing standard low-cost modules
² Finance and investment partners: § Allows lower cost integration of fleets of distributed resources increasing the value of the assets
² Utilities: § Customize modules to meet platform, protocol, and security demands; can provide grid support by
aggregating fleets of distributed resources. Can integrate into AMI networks.
SunSpec CTA 2045 Inverter Modular Communication Workgroup
² Isolate compute platform evolution from power conversion platform
² Focus on inverter integration issues
² Looking for broad collaboration with industry partners
SunSpec Workgroup Advice* Getting Started
² Understand your charter and how it fits into SunSpec effort
² Make sure you have support from the right SunSpec folks
² Make sure you have broad industry support if possible § Can be a challenge!
² Recognize that these efforts are often a marathon, not a sprint § Develop a reasonable rhythm * Andrew Miller – 1Energy, SunSpec Member Meeting, March 15, 2016
Start-up Inverter MC Workgroup
² Hold informational meetings: today is first one! ² Weekly meetings, begin week of May 2; ² Day/time? ² Validate Inverter MC WG Effort is Needed
² Does Inverter industry need a modular, standard communication interface?
² Other options: USB3? Ethernet and gateway? ² If so what needs to change?
Inverter MC Workgroup Next Steps…
² Strawman charter to be validated: § CTA 2045 is needed; Workgroup defines mechanical,
electrical and physical layer or layer 1 interface for inverters
² Recruit needed support in next weeks… ² Who do we need? Equipment Mfg’s., Integrators, Fleet
Operators, Utilities, Aggregators, Etc. ² Draft workgroup plan w/ critical mass and charter ² Validate: Go/no for continuation Inverter Modular
Communications Workgroup in 6 weeks ² What are we missing?

Some of the Questions and Issues
² Does Inverter industry need a modular, standard communication interface? ² e.g. Ethernet/RJ-45, Serial/RS-485/DB-9 ² Other options: USB3? Ethernet and gateway?
² CTA 2045 DC or AC? ² AC: requires AC power and large format ² DC: Power to plug; insufficient for cellar modem? need extension? ² Global issues among others, un-ordered
² External accessibility probably required(or plastic shielding) ² “No Link Layer Mode” for inverters ² Wireless antenna considerations ² 3rd Party installation considerations ² Weather proofing considerations ² Physical security ² Who will be key to get to join the effort?
