Top tips for the ideal Living Room LayoutAs the name suggests, the living room is one of the spaces in your home that gets the most use. It serves a variety of functions, from relaxing and entertaining to listening to music and watching television. Getting the layout right is crucial to make the most of your space.

Choose your focal point

Light, Before you position your furniture, think about what will be the main focal point of the room. In many cases this is the television, but it could also be a fireplace or a set of patio doors out to the garden. The rest of your furniture can then be positioned around this feature. Make sure that any seating is the right distance from your focal point. For example, sofas should be positioned so that the television can be seen comfortably, not too close or too far away.

A floor plan can be helpful when planning your living room layout. Begin with the outline, including doors and windows, before adding details of everything that has to be included. Using paper cut-outs of the furniture makes it easier to adjust the plan until you get your perfect layout. Planning first will make sure you don’t end up blocking off power points or covering radiators. The more symmetrical your layout, the more formal the room will look.

Function first

The room needs to be comfortable but also has to work effectively at all times. If you have children, this might mean incorporating extra storage so their toys can be tided away when the room is used for evening entertaining. Overhead lighting may be too bright when you want to create a relaxed ambience, so include some table lamps. Make sure that every seat has access to a table for people to rest drinks or food on.
