Since this is the time of year when it makes the most sense to apply lime to your lawn, I think a little reminder is in order. Why is this the best time? To cause the pH correction you’re looking for, lime takes at least 3 months. If you test your soil and apply lime in the spring, you won’t see any benefit until the very end of the season. If you make your application now, the lime will have all winter to react with the soil and you’ll start out the growing season next year with nice, sweet soil. During my years in garden retailing, I’ve noticed a reluctance among residential turf specialists (you who care for the lawn) to pay attention to soil pH. Many folks are willing to spend hundreds of dollars on lawn food and moss controls but will dig in their heels when asked to spend a couple of bucks on a simple soil pH test kit. Go figure. I guess it sounds too “complicated and scientific” or something. We’re not talking hours of research in a laboratory here, just a thimble full of soil, one test tube and some distilled water. The benefits of properly adjusting the pH of the soil and the benefits of limestone itself are far reaching. I could carry on for pages about nutrients in the soil (or from the fertilizer you pay good money for) being “bound up” and unavailable to plants because of acidic soil. I could write reams on how the microorganisms that “feed” your lawn die off in soils with a low pH. I could rant and rave about how important calcium and magnesium (from limestone) are in formation of plant fiber or how osmosis (the ability of plant to draw moisture from the soil) is impeded in acidic soil. Let’s just say, its VERY important. Here’s the deal. There’s a tendency for soil to gradually become acidic over time. Decomposing organic matter (grass clippings in the case of your lawn), fertilizer and acid rain all contribute to acidification of the soil. In heavier soils like clay, this happens very slowly. In looser soils like sand, acidification occurs more rapidly. The more fertilizer and organic matter you apply to your lawn or garden, the more often you should check the pH. Different plants prefer different pH levels. Most vegetables grow best in slightly acidic soil (pH 6.5 to 6.8) while your lawn will be healthier if the soil is neutral (pH 7). Every once in a while I run into someone who’s heard that lime is good for the lawn and they’ll ask, “I’ve got an average size lawn and I’ve never limed it. How much lime should I apply?” To the uninformed, this seems like a reasonable question. To me, it’s like asking your mechanic, ”I have a mid-sized sedan. How much oil do I need to add?” There’s no way your mechanic could answer unless you allowed him/her to look at the dipstick. The inexpensive soil pH test kit is your “dipstick” to determine how much lime you need to apply for healthy plant growth. If I’m asked, “I have 10,000 sq. ft. of lawn and the pH is 6.0. How much lime should I apply?” I can then say that you need 10-40 lb. bags of pelletized lime to bring your soil’s pH up to the pH of 7.0 that it should have. Of course, you may not need to ask since the information is provided in the pH test kit. Unlike fertilizer applications, you won’t need to apply lime every year. Usually every 3 to 5 years, maybe even longer depending on the type of soil you have. Another benefit of checking and properly adjusting the pH of the soil in your lawn is the control of moss. I’m not telling you that lime applications will kill moss if it’s already established itself in your lawn but if you’d paid attention to the soil’s pH all along you probably wouldn’t have a moss problem to begin with. Moss won’t take hold and thrive unless the soil is acidic. Once it gets established, moss causes the soil in the area it’s growing to become acidic even faster; creating an environment that allows it to spread quickly. The net effect is that the moss kills off the grass by making the soil too acidic and then fills in the bare area that’s left. The whole situation can be avoided by checking and adjusting the soil’s pH regularly. Remember, too much lime will make the soil too alkaline for the grass to thrive so more isn’t better. The bottom line is this: you can spend a few bucks for a pH test kit and you’ll end up using less lawn food and have a healthier, more disease and drought resistant lawn while spending less. PH test kits are one of the best lawn care bargains going. Thanks for the read.

WEEKEND ROAD TRIP TIPSA long weekend provides the perfect opportunity to hop into the car and embark on aroad trip. Sometimes it doesn't take an extended vacation to recharge your batteries. Abrief change of scenery and venue can make for quite the respite as well.
Road trips also tend to be more affordable than longer getaways. If you have the benefitof a tow hitch and a camper, you already have your accommodations. But even if youstill need lodging, there are several budget motels that can fit the bill for overnight lodgingalong your route. Here are some other road trip tips.
* Before embarking, take out a map and plan your excursion. Stick to locations that arewithin reasonable driving distance from home. If you roam too far, you will spend moretime behind the wheel than you will enjoying your destination. Locations no more thanfive to six hours away should suffice.
* Get your vehicle in road trip shape by ensuring it is in good working condition. If yourcar is scheduled for an oil change, get one before leaving. In addition, top off fluids andbe sure that tires are properly inflated.
* Stick to the scenic routes. While they may not save you travel time, avoiding interstatesin favor of picturesque backroads will make for a much more relaxing and visually in-spiring trip. Schedule rest stops so you can get out of the car and explore along the wayto your destination. Taking backroads may also help you avoid some of your fellow week-end travelers.
* Make your long weekend a Saturday through Monday affair. You may find the roadsare more congested Friday through Sunday. Simply starting your trip on Saturday andreturning on Monday could save you the headache of driving in heavy traffic.
* Scope out low-cost activities at your destination. Many national parks are inexpensiveand may only charge one fee per vehicle to enter. After Labor Day, many beaches nolonger charge entry fees, making them an affordable option.
Take advantage of cooler temperatures and picturesque scenery by planning an autumnweekend road trip.
FULL MOONMany Halloween images aredepicted with a full moon in thebackground. Full moonsevoke visions of werewolvesbaying or vampire bats flutter-ing by. But a full moon on Hal-loween is actually quite rare. Afull moon that occurs on Hal-loween is actually most often a“blue moon,” or the second fullmoon of the month. On aver-age, a full moon appears onceevery 28 days, or the time ittakes for the Moon to orbitaround Earth and be on theother side of the Sun. Veryrarely a blue moon can occurwhen the full moon appearstwice in one month. The lasttime a full moon appeared onHalloween was in 2001. Thenext time Halloween revelerswill be treated to a full moonon Halloween is Saturday, Oc-tober 31, 2020.

FREE CAR CARE GUIDE FOR MOTORISTS(NAPSI)-When it comes to keeping your car running smoothly, one of the most importantpieces of equipment may not be under the hood but in the glove compartment.
Free Auto GuideThat’s because that’s the place to put the totally redesigned “Car Care Guide” from thenonprofit Car Care Council. The 80-page guide uses easy-to-understand, everyday lan-guage rather than technical automotive jargon and covers the most common preventivemaintenance occasions and procedures that should be performed to keep cars safe, de-pendable and efficient. It also includes descriptions of major vehicle systems and parts, and a list of questions to ask about maintenance or repair procedures. A car care check-list reminds motorists what vehicle systems need to be maintained and when serviceshould be performed.
Twenty additional pages provide new information on finding an automotive repair shop, alternative fuels, understanding the warranty, vehicle telematics, and careers in the autocare industry, and include an expanded environmental awareness section.
Expert Advice“Because properly maintained vehicles perform more safely and dependably for driversand their families, the Car Care Council is committed to providing useful information andtools for motorists, like the newly updated, easy-to-follow ‘Car Care Guide,’ to help takethe mystery out of auto service and repair,” said Rich White, executive director, Car CareCouncil.
How To Get The InformationAvailable in English and Spanish, individual copies of the new guide can be ordered, free, from www.carcare.org/car-care-guide. For more information, visit www.carcare.orgor follow the Car Care Council on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest.
