HOW TO INSULATE YOUR HOME AGAINST A DEADLY FIRE(MS)-As fire prevention awareness efforts gear up across North America, the NationalFire Protection Association and insulation company, Roxul Inc., are spreading the wordto Americans from coast to coast about the importance of fire preparedness.
Through the “Hear the BEEP where you SLEEP” campaign and Roxul’s “When SecondsCount” initiative, Americans are reminded that simple steps can cut their chances ofdying in a fire in half.
Here are some measures you can take to dramatically reduce your risk:
• Be sure to have a smoke alarm on every story of your home and outside sleeping areas.
• Develop a fire escape plan and practice it.
• Use non-combustible materials when renovating. The choice of insulation can make abig difference. Opt for a product with the highest fire resistance possible, like Roxul min-eral wool insulation, which, in the event of a fire, will not produce harmful gases, toxicsmoke or promote the spread of flames.
• Purchase a multi-use fire ladder for each bedroom in your home and practise using it.
• Place fire extinguishers within reach throughout your home.
• In the event of a fire, leave through the closest exit. Do not stop to collect belongingsand never reenter a home once safely outside.
Additional fire safety tips are available at nfpa.org. You can also improve your fire safetyknowledge, with a contest incentive, by visiting roxul.com.

ENSURE A MORE ENJOYABLE WINTER INDOORS WITH SIMPLESOUNDPROOFING SOLUTIONS
(MS)- As the weather gets colder, Americans inevitably spend more time indoors. If you’resharing a space with an excitable toddler, an aspiring rock musician or a TV enthusiastwith a penchant for loud volumes, peace and quiet may seem increasingly elusive.
Try these simple soundproofing tips to restore or create a more tranquil atmosphere inyour home:
1. Hush noisy appliances. Make sure your appliances are working smoothly. Unusualrattles, clanks or vibrations may mean it’s time for a repair. When a replacement isneeded, seek out a quieter machine. New technologies have allowed manufacturers tolower the sound output of many models.
2. Seal sound leaks. Holes and cracks around windows and doors let outside noise intothe home. Weather-stripping and/or caulking can help to eliminate the intrusion of exteriornoise. Adhesive soundproofing tape can also help seal any problem areas.
3. Anticipate centers of noise when renovating. When designing a new room or reno-vating an existing one, consider its intended use and potential for generating noise. Play-rooms, music studios or home theaters, for example, can be quieted with insulation. Lookfor a product such as Roxul Safe’n’Sound that is specifically designed to provide superiorsound absorption and can be applied to the interior walls of a noisy room to effectivelyreduce disruptive sounds.
4. Use sound-absorbent materials. Carpets and window drapes prevent sound fromechoing around a room. If your home has hardwood, laminate flooring or tile, considerinvesting in a throw rug to reduce ambient noise and add some character to your space.
Taking simple steps to create a more peaceful space will maximize the enjoyment ofyour home. It can also have the added benefit of helping to keep the peace amongspouses, parents and siblings alike.

This is the time of year that I like to collect seeds from any annuals that I want to reproduce next year. At the end of a dry day, I collect the mature seedpods from some of my favorites and put them into envelopes for storage. Cosmos, cleome, marigolds and my purple amaranthus all go into the collection. I also gather the seeds of perennials that grow easily from seed like coneflowers and gallardia. There is always such an abundance of seeds that I like to scatter what I don’t save into outlying areas of the yard or down the long driveway. Sometimes they come up, sometimes not but when they do, it’s always a treat. It won’t be long before we get our first frost. Once that happens, it will be time to rescue all the non-hardy bulbs and tubers that we planted in spring. Gladiolus, acidanthera, dahlias, cannas and others must be rescued and stored. Many folks shy away from non-hardy tuberous garden flowers because of “all the hassle” of digging them up and storing them. It IS a bit of work but, considering the contribution these lovely plants make to the summer flowerbeds, the work involved is minimal. Besides, they increase in size and number with each season so you’re rewarded with more to plant and share with gardening friends. Rescuing the plants is simply a matter of popping them out of the ground (“lifting” is the term gardening types like to use) with a trowel or shovel. After they’ve air-dried, any loose soil should be shaken or brushed (not washed) from them. After cutting off the dead foliage, I’ll dust them with a bulb dust to help prevent rotting. This I accomplish by putting a little of the dust in a paper bag, adding the bulbs and shaking, (ala shake & bake). Once they’re dusted, I’ll place my bulb collection into paper bags or cardboard shoeboxes filled with dry, sterile POTTING SOIL. You could use peat moss or wood shavings instead but I prefer sterile potting soil since it lessens the chance of rot during storage. Avoid airtight, plastic containers for storage. Plastic containers won’t allow your dormant bulbs and tubers to “breathe” properly. Once they’re all boxed and bagged, I’ll place the collection in a cool location that doesn’t freeze over winter. Once or twice during the winter, I’ll take my collection out to move them around and check for dryness. If they seem to be drying out, I’ll mist them with water, allow them to dry and place them back into storage. There really isn’t much work involved so when you see summer flowering bulbs offered in the garden centers in spring (when they’re generally available), be brave and try a few. It’s well worth the little effort you’ll expend.Just one little tip before I run out of space. If you have an area of your lawn that you want to start or thicken up, consider “dormant seeding”. The idea is to wait until the weather gets so cold that there is no chance of grass seed sprouting (but before the snow falls) and apply grass seed. This may sound crazy but here’s the idea. Your late application of grass seed will lie out there all winter without sprouting. Snow and rain will beat the seed down through the grass blades to the surface of the soil. Since the seed will be soaking all winter, it will sprout with the first warm weather next spring. Don’t worry about the freezing weather harming the grass seed. Grass grown in a natural state (not mowed) would grow tall and produce a crop of seed. This seed would then fall to the ground and sprout the following spring. We mow our lawns so the grass plants never get the chance to produce a crop of seed. By adding seed late in the season, you’re providing that crop. It’s an easy way to thicken up thin areas without having to waste time in the spring dragging hoses around trying to keep the seed moist. Try it…it works. Thanks for the read.
