In last week’s column, I’d just discovered how easily my purple amaranthus self-sowed. After enjoying and experimenting with them for a couple of years, I noticed another variety offered in a seed catalog called ‘Elephant Head’. The fun I was having with my purple
resemble an uplifted, trumpeting head of an elephant. It was hard for me to get the same im-pression from the picture in the catalog but, poetic license aside, it looked like an interesting plant. Seeds were ordered and started inside over winter and planted out in spring. Just like its purple cousin, Elephant Head took off quickly. By the end of July, I had a lovely group of
I must admit that I was having a hard time seeing much of a resemblance to and elephant’s head. To my mind, they looked more like an obscene gesture often exchanged by motor-

duced thousands of them. I grew a bunch of them the following year and now they, along
erbed. Now I simply pull out the ones I don’t want and leave the ones I do. That is some easy gardening!
Over the years, I’ve learned a lot more about this interesting family of plants. Like corn, squash, potatoes, marigolds and poinsettias and many other of our favorites, amaranthus
grew amaranthus as a grain rather than for its ornamental qualities. Ancient gardeners har-vested the seeds which were served as a side dish much like we would rice or potatoes. Un-like rice or potatoes however, amaranthus seeds contain as much as 18% protein and are rich in iron, calcium, lysine and phosphorus. There is also evidence that they toasted the seeds until they popped and ate them as a snack. Sort of miniature popcorn. The grain varieties of amaranthus range in height from 4’ to 8’ and are adaptive to a wide range of soil and climatic conditions. Interestingly, this adaptability is causing a resurgence in popularity among farm-ers dealing with soils of marginal quality. It may be that the easy-to-grow amaranthus will play an increasingly important role as we attempt to feed the exploding population in the decades to come.
Like many of the plants brought to Europe from the New World during from the 1500s on, amaranthus enjoyed a good bit of popularity there. Plant breeders worked their magic and developed some ornamental varieties you may have heard of. You may remember your grandmother growing ‘Love-Lies-Bleeding’. This amaranthus, despite its gloomy name, is a

If you order and grow amaranthus, you probably won’t have to ever order them again if you take a few minutes in the fall to gather several thousand seeds for yourself and your friends. Thanks for the read.

HOW TO KEEP KIDS ENTERTAINED ALL SUMMER LONGSummer camp is a popular way for kids to spend their summers, but many camps areexpensive. The American Camp Association has found that overnight camps can costanywhere from $325 to $780 a week. Day camp fees may be $100 to $275 per week.Parents who send their children to camp for an entire season might pay anywhere from$3,000 to $9,000 for the seven- to nine-week program.
Parents looking for an alternative to costly camps should consider local programs thatoffer summer activities. Libraries, schools and childcare centers may have programsthat run the length of summer and are considerably less expensive than more formalcamps. A YMCA or even a swim club may also put together activities. Parents whosechildren attend afterschool sporting classes, such as karate or soccer, may find that theorganizations offer a camp or summer program.
If a parent is off for the summer, then day trips may be a possibility. Schedule a few daytrips to different locations that the kids are excited to see. Newspapers routinely print"Go See It" or "Just Go" listings that highlight local events. The family can gather aroundthe table and decide which outings would be interesting and then mark them on the cal-endar. Some parents purchase season passes to amusement parks and take the kidsseveral times over the summer. In either case, bring snacks and lunch from home whenpossible to keep costs in check.

PROTECTING AGAINST SUN DAMAGE WHILE IN A CAR(NAPSI)—The average American spends more than 101 minutes a day in a car. Un-fortunately, what many drivers and passengers fail to realize is that when they are ina car, not all the danger they face is on the road.
Both drivers and passengers are often exposed to harmful ultraviolet A (UVA) rays, particularly from the side windows of the cars in which they ride.
“Damage from certain kinds of ultraviolet rays is cumulative,” says Dr. Dee AnnaGlaser, vice chair of the dermatology department at St. Louis University. “These rayspenetrate deep into the skin and can silently accelerate the aging process, causewrinkles and even skin cancer.”
Fortunately, adding a UVA-blocking film or tint to car windows can be an effective wayto help block damaging rays and protect yourself while you drive.
For example, a range of window film options, sold under the brand name LLumar, provide UV protection. There’s even a clear film that appeals to those who do notwant a darker window appearance, or where the use of dark films is prohibited bystate law. When applied over ordinary automotive glass, this film’s virtually invisibleprotection blocks more than 99 percent of harmful UV rays.* LLumar window film actsas “sunscreen”—offering daily sun protection with a one-time application.
