The snow is finally just about melted off the lawn and our long winter will begin to fade away. It is a little too early to do much with the lawn other than rake up the debris. While there may not be much we can do for the lawn this early, we can take care of the most important aspects of lawn care that is also the most overlooked; soil pH testing and lime applications. During my years in garden retailing, I’ve noticed a reluctance among residential turf specialists (you who care for the lawn) to pay attention to soil pH. Many are willing to spend hundreds of dollars on lawn food and moss controls but will dig in their heels when asked to spend a couple of bucks on a simple soil pH test kit. Go figure. I guess it sounds too “complicated and scientific” or something. We’re not talking hours of research in a laboratory here, just a thimble full of soil and one test tube. The benefits of properly adjusting the pH of the soil and the benefits of limestone itself are far reaching. I could carry on for pages about nutrients in the soil (or from the fertilizer you pay good money for) being “bound up” and unavailable to plants because of acidic soil. I could write reams on how the microorganisms that “feed” your lawn die off in soils with a low pH. I could rant and rave about how important calcium and magnesium (from limestone) are in formation of plant fiber or how osmosis (the ability of plant to draw moisture from the soil) is impeded in acidic soil. Let’s just say, its VERY important. Here’s the deal. There’s a tendency for soil to gradually become acidic over time. Decomposing organic matter (grass clippings in the case of your lawn), fertilizer and acid rain all contribute to acidification of the soil. In heavier soils like clay, this happens very slowly. In looser soils like sand, acidification occurs more rapidly. The more fertilizer and organic matter you apply to your lawn or garden, the more often you should check the pH. Different plants prefer different pH levels. Most vegetables grow best in slightly acidic soil (pH 6.5 to 6.8) while your lawn will be healthier if the soil is neutral (pH 7). Every once in a while I run into someone who’s heard that lime is good for the lawn and they’ll ask, “I’ve got an average size lawn and I’ve never limed it. How much lime should I apply?” To the uninformed, this seems like a reasonable question. To me, it’s like asking your mechanic, ”I have a mid-sized sedan. How much oil do I need to add?” There’s no way your mechanic could answer unless you allowed him/her to look at the dipstick. The inexpensive soil pH test kit is your “dipstick” to determine how much lime you need to apply for healthy plant growth. If I’m asked, “I have 10,000 sq. ft. of lawn and the pH is 6.0. How much lime should I apply?” I can then say that you need 10-40 lb. bags of pelletized lime to bring your soil’s pH up to the pH of 7.0 that it should have. Of course, you may not need to ask since the information is provided in the pH test kit. Unlike fertilizer applications, you won’t need to apply lime every year. Usually every 3 to 5 years, maybe even longer depending on the type of soil you have. Another benefit of checking and properly adjusting the pH of the soil in your lawn is the control of moss. I’m not telling you that lime applications will kill moss if it’s already established itself in your lawn but if you’d paid attention to the soil’s pH all along you probably wouldn’t have a moss problem to begin with. Moss won’t take hold and thrive unless the soil is acidic. Once it gets established, moss causes the soil in the area it’s growing to become acidic even faster; creating an environment that allows it to spread quickly. The net effect is that the moss kills off the grass by making the soil too acidic and then fills in the bare area that’s left. The whole situation can be avoided by checking and adjusting the soil’s pH regularly. Remember, too much lime will make the soil too alkaline for the grass to thrive so more isn’t better. The bottom line is this: you can spend a few bucks for a pH test kit and you’ll end up using less lawn food and have a healthier, more disease and drought resistant lawn while spending less. pH test kits are one of the best bargains going. Thanks for the read.

HOW TO PURCHASE YOUR FIRST HOME IN 2015(NAPSI)—The American dream of homeownership may not be as hard to attain as manypeople seem to fear. A few intriguing facts and hints can help.

The FactsWhile existing home sales have risen recently, the National Association of Realtors’ an-nual Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers found that the share of first-time buyers recentlyfell to its lowest level (33 percent) in nearly three decades. Many first-time buyers expe-rience obstacles on the path to homeownership, including difficulty saving for a downpayment and tight credit conditions.

The HintsConsider these tips:• Find and work with an expert Realtor who knows the neighborhood. Nothing can re-place the local knowledge and real insight that professional Realtors can provide to first-time buyers as they navigate the complex home buying process.According to the Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers, while most home buyers in thepast year began their home search online, 90 percent ended up purchasing their homethrough an agent. Realtors are not only the source of online real estate data, they alsouse their unparalleled local market knowledge and resources to help close the deal forbuyers and sellers.• Meet with a lender to determine how much you can afford. Last year, the median pricea first-time buyer spent on a home was $169,000. Chances are, you don’t have thatamount of cash lying around. That’s why 95 percent of first-time buyers who bought ahome in the past year financed their purchase.Find out what you can afford with a preapproval from a lender. A lender will check yourcredit history, current debt obligations and other expenses to determine the amount ofmoney you’re qualified to borrow at a specific interest rate. Don’t forget to consider theother costs of homeownership, such as taxes, insurance and utilities.• Identify your housing wish list. Although 46 percent of first-time buyers got a single-family home in the suburbs, you may prefer a condo in an urban environment near publictransportation.Regardless of your preferences, identifying and sharing your wish list can help your Re-altor focus on the right home for you, scan listings and connect with those who representsellers to zero in on homes for sale that meet your budget and criteria.Keep this advice in mind and you may soon find yourself waking up in the home of yourdreams.

A LITTLE KNOWLEDGE CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE(NAPSI)—When it comes to pinpointing potentially serious issues with your vehicle, yournose may know more than you realize. For example, the smell of burnt toast might be asign of an electrical short. The smell of rotten eggs may signal trouble with the emissionssystem, which includes the catalytic converter.

These and other tips are included in “Knowledge Is Power,” a booklet that’s part of a car-care and maintenance clinic developed by ACDelco. It gives vehicle owners easy-to-understand information about their vehicles so they can be informed and make the rightchoices when they visit an independent auto service center.

Here are some things you may not know about your vehicle:

• Reddish stains on the driveway can be a sign of a transmission oil leak.• If your technician asks if your vehicle’s brakes are “grabbing,” he wants to know if thebrakes engage suddenly when you apply steady pressure to the brake pedal.• You should pull over immediately if your temperature light reads in the hot zone. Thatprobably means your vehicle’s coolant is too hot to cool your engine.• Many brake pads have wear indicators. If your vehicle has them, they will emit loudsqueals when they detect wear.• It’s a good idea to write down your vehicle’s symptoms before visiting a repair shop, in-cluding noises—and whether these occur when the engine is hot or cold.• Air bags work with your safety belts, not as a replacement for them.• Children under 13 should ride properly secured in the rear seat.• Always keep at least a half tank of gas in your vehicle to avoid potential damage toyour fuel filter or fuel line.• Check your tire pressure frequently for safety and fuel economy. Hot and cold outsidetemperatures affect the pressure in your tires.• Avoid oil and fuel additives unless recommended by your ser-vice consultant.• Don’t use dish detergent to wash your car; it can hurt clearcoat finishes.

The “Knowledge Is Power” booklet is part of a presentation kit available to shops at nocharge. Consumers can download the free booklet at www.acdelco.com/pdf/Car-Main-tenance-Car-Care-Knowledge-Is-Power-ACDelco.pdf.

For more than 100 years, ACDelco has been supplying parts, technical training and busi-ness expertise to independent auto ser-vice centers. To find out if a service center inyour neighborhood is sponsoring a Knowledge Is Power clinic, visit ACDelco.com andclick on “Find a Service Center.”
