Hyundai Tucson.

Unexpected 4 star result (November 2015):• Structural integrity of footwell compromised.• Excessive rearward brake pedal movement.• 11.46 points out of 16.00 points in frontal offset (ODB) test.

Hyundai took immediate steps to rectify:• Design and production changes:

- spot weld control improvements- reinforcement of brake pedal- toe-pan reinforcement- airbag & pre-tensioner tuning

• 14.53 points out of 16.00 points in frontal offset (ODB) test.

5 star rating published in January 2016.

Mercedes-Benz V-Class.

Mercedes-Benz Vito van launched onto the Australasian market WITHOUT standard fit head-protecting airbags (making it ineligible for 5 stars):

• Curtain airbags available as an option (~AU$500).

Rather than ‘punish’, ANCAP worked with the Mercedes-Benz Australia’s marketing team who persuaded Mercedes-Benz Germany to make a running production change to fit curtain airbags on all Australasian Vito variants as standard.

• 4 star rating for non-curtain Vito published for consumer information in parallel with 5 star rating.• Congratulatory public statement made by ANCAP. Public statement made by Mercedes-Benz in

recognition of ANCAP’s support.

Kia Picanto / Kia Morning.

Originally tested and rated by Euro NCAP in 2011, awarded 4 star Euro NCAP rating:• creditable 15.10 points (out of 16.00) for frontal offset test• limited to 4 star Euro NCAP rating due to low Safety Assist score.

Released in NZ in 2012, awarded 5 star ANCAP rating.• NZ rating based on Euro NCAP test results and in-house RHD submission.

Released in Australia in 2016, 5 star ANCAP rating extended to Australian variants.

Subsequently in 2016 Latin NCAP and ASEAN NCAP separately awarded 0 star ratings for local models = trigger for ANCAP audit.

Kia Picanto / Kia Morning.

Audit test conducted on RHD Picanto.• 12.95 points out of 16.00 points in frontal offset (ODB) test.

Kia invited to provide an explanation of the differences in injury outcomes:• Technical explanations put forth by Kia not accepted by ANCAP.

5 star rating retained (12.50 point threshold) but ANCAP datasheet revised to provide consumers with summary of audit test results.

Additional test data required for future Kia submissions.

Audit testing: Keeping brands honest.

Vehicle brands on notice.

Increased future focus on audit testing.

ANCAP to conduct 2 x audit tests per year:• To confirm validity of existing ratings.• To verify manufacturer-supplied data.• To review changes / improvements to vehicle production.• To compare test results across NCAPs / markets.• To determine effectiveness of vehicle safety features / systems.• To review test lab capability.• To trial different dummy configurations.• To show compatibility with higher / lower test speeds.

Priorities.

Page 21: ANCAP Update

Strategic Objectives 2016-18.

• Work cooperatively with and support member organisations to help them promote safer vehicles.

• Work cooperatively with vehicle brands to raise the bar on safety whilst remaining independent.

• Work cooperatively with other stakeholders to promote safer vehicles through the ‘Safe Systems’ approach.

• Work cooperatively with Euro NCAP and testing laboratories to develop and implement a common test protocol in 2018.

Page 22: ANCAP Update

Strategic Objectives 2016-18.

• Test and interpret data to assess the crash avoidance and crash protection safety of new motor vehicles to compare their performance and publish the results.

• Educate consumers on new vehicle safety features and safer vehicle choices.

• Educate and influence decision-makers to advocate for improved vehicle safety.

• Maintain strong links with other NCAPs and international advocates to lift and align safety standards around the world.

• Maintain and improve support for the organisation – leveraging existing and exploring new support streams.

Common Test & Assessment Protocol 2018.

ANCAP and Euro NCAP to adopt common test & assessment protocols and policies from 1 January 2018:

• new & updated tests• new test equipment• new assessment methods • new scoring methodology• assessment of child occupant protection

Regional differences considered in relation to:• Vehicle Specification, Sponsorship, Testing & Re-Testing (VSSTR)• Safety Assist (SA)• Child Occupant Protection

Includes alignment of technical policies & procedures.

Page 26: ANCAP Update

Benefits of protocol alignment.

• ANCAP can utilise Euro NCAP ratings = Euro NCAP can utilise ANCAP ratings.

• Increased influence on protocol development through participation in working groups.

• Shared protocols between regions are a further step towards a global protocols – encourages harmonisation for other regions (future potential for ANCAP to obtain results from other NCAPs).

• Likely reduction in differently specified vehicles across markets, in particular safety systems already available in Europe becoming more common in Australia / New Zealand.
