Information about EMI Filters

EMI filters are the kind of electronic equipment which are used in circuit boards to reduce the high frequency electronic noise which may cause interference with other devices.

These emissions are electromagnetic in nature, in the form of either conducted or radiated emissions.

Conducted Vs Radiated

In Conducted EMI, noise travels through electrical conductors, where as radiated EMI is one where noise travels through air as magnetic fields or radio waves.

EMI is actually produced from the switching of electrical current and comes from sources like electronic power supplies.

Inductors and Capacitors

These power supplies convert an input voltage into regulated DC voltages. This conversion is being performed at high frequencies.

Moreover, an EMI filter consists of passive components like capacitors and inductors. The use of capacitors is to provide a low impedance to put the high frequency noise away from the input of filter.

In contrast, inductors are made to allow DC current or low frequency to pass, by blocking the harmful high frequency current.
