Biotechnology Technologist program

Covers a wide variety of microbiological techniques including the cultivation, manipulation, isolation and identification of microorganisms and the use of biological organisms to actively manufacture chemical products for industrial process usage;

Provides an understanding of regulatory affairs and the ethical implications of the biotechnology industry and its influence on society; and

Opportunity to apply skills to real-world research projects including developing additional advanced research, data management and communications skills.

Biotechnology Technologist program

Enables students to conduct extensive experiments in cell and molecular biology including isolating and manipulating DNA, purifying and characterizing protein and growing and maintaining cells in tissue culture; and

Allows students to develop the highly transferable laboratory skills required to be successful in the biotechnology industry.

A work placement program in third year enables students to utilize their skills and gain valuable industry-related experience.

Human Resources Management (HRM) (graduate certificate)

Human resources (HR) professionals serve as strategic partners in today’s business environment. They work closely with management colleagues throughout all levels of a company in a variety of project-based and proactive initiatives.

Durham College’s HRM graduate certificate program is designed for individuals with previous post-secondary education (three-year college diploma or a university degree is required) or related work experience (at least three years of relevant work experience in a human resources-related role).

Field placement:

A four-week block field placement takes place during April to May following two semesters of academic study;During placement, students apply the theories and concepts studied in the classroom to a real-world setting in order to gain hands-on HRM-related work experience prior to graduation; andField placement opportunities are designed to be flexible so students can choose placements that align with their career plans (placements must be approved by the field placement co-ordinator based on program criteria).

Pharmaceutical and Food Science Technology

program Provides the essential skills, laboratory training and experience in biology, microbiology and chemistry required to pursue a career in science;

Focused on the analyzing of food and pharmaceuticals including purity, chemical composition and the quality determination of raw materials and finished products;

Students learn how to isolate and identify micro-organisms; and

Teaches the processes used by food and pharmaceutical companies to produce and safely test high-quality products for consumer acceptance.

program Students gain hands-on experience in the methods and instrumentation used in the pharmaceutical and food science technology industry through the college’s fully equipped microbiology, chemical analysis and processing labs;

Program is unique to Ontario and local employers repeatedly require the technical expertise of graduates including the Canadian Institute of Food Science and Technology, which gives monetary awards for academic excellence; and

A work placement program in third year allows students to work for a company one day a week while they complete their studies.

Many international students have a goal to work in Canada. International students are:

Eligible to apply for an off-campus work permit after successfully completing six months of a post-secondary program with a minimum 2.0 grade point average (C grade);

Allowed to work up to a 20 hours (maximum) per week while in school and up to 40 hours per week during vacations;

Able to apply for a post-graduate work permit valid for one year if they graduate from a one-year certificate program; and

Allowed to apply for a post-graduate, three-year work permit if they are a graduate of a two- or three-year diploma or advanced diploma program.
