Princess — The owner of a block of fl ats op-posite Princess informal settlement, Alet Fourie alongside some of her tenants attended a meet-ing with City Power’s Operational Manager for the Roodepoort area, Solomon Benghu on 31 July.

The meeting was called by Benghu and a desperate Fourie had to travel all the way from Swartruggens, where she resides, in the hope of fi nally solving the problem. Her (paying) ten-ants have been without electricity for a stagger-ing 75 days.

Over and above the fact that Fourie’s tenants have no electricity she has been billed the entire time and paid R10 000 a month for electricity. Strangely enough her bills allegedly are based on actual readings and not estimates, despite the fact that she does not have any meters to read anymore.

Although Benghu set the meeting for 10am he only arrived at 10.46am.

Fourie accused Benghu of not responding to her calls or emails.

Benghu claimed that he has sent a contractor out but the tenants refuted this, saying a con-tractor only came out once and left “because the box was welded close”.

Fourie is going to report City Power to the Human Rights Commission (HRC) and to the National Consumer Council (NCC).

Niemand DA's Campaign Manager for 2014Roodepoort — The DA’s 2014 election cam-paign in the Florida Constituency will be led by Ward 71 Councillor Gert Niemand.

The Constituency consists of 10 wards, which cover the whole of Roodepoort.

“My aim is to get 50 volunteers in each ward who will be involved actively in campaigning from now until the election in 2014,” says Nie-mand.

“Although we do not want to campaign at schools, we would like to obtain permission to help all pupils who are turning 18 before the election in April, to register in time,” Niemand explained.

According to Niemand voters already can register on the second fl oor of the Civic Centre on Christiaan de Wet Road.

He says that all DA supporters who wish to volunteer, can contact him on 078 743 9681 or email him at [email protected].

Local resident shooting for DA's Gauteng premiershipRoodepoort — Hot on the heals of MPL (Member of Provincial Legislature) Jack Bloom’s announcement, local resident, DA national spokesperson and political wonder-boy, Mmusi Maimane announced his candi-dacy for the DA’s Gauteng premiership on 31 July.

This was also the closing date for members who wish to stand as candidates, and the result of the electoral college will be announced on 9 August.

In an impassioned speech Maimane said that he was “humbled, because 20 years ago, no one would have said it would be possible for me to stand here today. They would have said it was impossible.”

“They would have said it was impossible, because I am a young black man. They would have said it was impossible, because I am from Soweto. They would have said it was impossi-ble, because I am the son of a migrant worker father from the North West and a migrant worker mother from the Eastern Cape.

“But the DA is here to say that what once seemed impossible – can become a reality. It is possible for each and every South African to reach for their dreams, and live the lives they want to,” Maimane continued.

Maimane also gave his own reasons why the people have lost faith in the government.

Maimane not buying e-tag

Roodepoort — On 31 July local resident and national spokesperson for the DA, Mmusi Maimane announced his candidacy for the DA’s Gauteng Premier position.

One of the issues he raised in his speech was that if elected he would fi ght the e-tolling sys-tem.

“I do not have one and will not get one,” Maimane said in his speech about e-tags.

The Record contacted Maimane to fi nd out more about his statement.

“I would be hypocritical if I bought an e-tag. I am totally opposed to the tolling sys-tem. I will never encourage citizens to break the law,” said Maimane in the telephonic in-terview.

“At the moment though it is not written into law and we will keep on appealing it. It is unfair that a law like this must be forced down onto the residents of Gauteng,” explained Maimane.

The Record asked him if he was encourag-

Striking Pikitup workers admit guiltRoodepoort — Residents who suffered because of the impasse between Pikitup and the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu), can fi nally heave a sigh of relief.

Pikitup released a media statement on 31 July stating, “Pikitup has now reached an agreement with Samwu on the organisation’s terms, in dealing with the suspensions of the workers and can confi rm that the agreement has been signed.

“The union, in a statement issued with per-mission by the workers, stated that the work-ers pleaded an admission of guilt and accepted various levels of warnings based on previous misdemeanours on fi le. Samwu leadership have requested that on the back of this agreement, Pikitup will allow the 1 791 workers to return to

work as of 31 July 2013.”According to Dineo Mphoreng of Ogilvy and

Mather who handles Pikitup’s public relations account, operations in the city will normalise owing to the return of suspended employees. She did ask the public though to bear in mind that there are backlog challenges in certain are-as but added that the organisation “is striving to get all operations back to normal by 5 August if not sooner. “As management we are happy that key stakeholders such as our employees and the majority union Samwu have realised that we are all acting in the best interests of the organisa-tion and that measures introduced are mecha-nisms aimed at making this a business we can all be proud of,” said Pikitup MD, Amanda Nair.

Westgate pedestrians:Walk safely in August

Westgate Park — Pedestrians crossing Ontdekkers Road opposite Westgate will be safe as of the beginning of August, according to the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA).

In response to the Record’s investigation of claims that a newly installed pedestrian cross-ing on Ontdekkers Road is unsafe, the JRA’s Ntsikelelo Ngubeni gives the assurance that the pedestrian crossing will be fully operation-al by Friday 2 August.

His press release contradicts Westgate’s marketing manager Nick Scott’s claims that Westgate management “had nothing to do with it”. Ngubeni says in his press release that “Arup Consulting Engineers, as appointed by the Westgate development, approached the JRA with a request for to install a signal-ised pedestrian crossing on Ontdekkers Road [sic]”.

Ngubeni told the Record that the installa-tion of such a pedestrian crossing was moti-vated by the large number of pedestrians that cross the busy Ontdekkers Road in that area on a daily basis.

“The JRA Traffi c Engineering Services De-partment agreed to the installation of the said pedestrian traffi c signals.”

Ngubeni explains that to date Arup Con-sulting Engineers has submitted the traffi c signal designs and that JRA has approved it.

“It is envisaged that the traffi c signals will be operational by Friday 2 August.”

The Record certainly will follow up on these claims.

Ngubeni invites residents to report any road-related service defects, theft, vandalism and fraudulent activities to the JRA call cen-tre on 0860 JOBURG (562 874) or to email their hotline at [email protected]. Residents also can use the Tip-Offs Anonymous hotline on 0800 00 25 87 or email at [email protected].

DA Councillor Gert Niemand will be DA Cam-paign Manager in 2014.

“They stop believing because President Zuma spends R240 million on his house, in-stead of building houses for South Africans.

“They stop believing because our police take bribes while women and children are be-ing raped.

“They stop believing because the people in government care more about enriching them-selves and their families than helping the peo-ple.

“They stop believing because we are no longer addressing the economic legacy of apartheid. More South Africans are unem-ployed than ever before. The difference be-tween the rich and the poor is bigger than ever before.

“They stop believing because they see cor-ruption everywhere in government.

“People have stopped believing and lost hope because we are moving in the wrong di-rection. There are fewer jobs because President Zuma governs only for himself and his friends and family. As government becomes more cor-rupt, poor people are becoming poorer,” said Maimane.

Maimane said that his mission was to con-tinue the struggle for a better life for all, and restore people’s belief in a better future. He said that by believing, the DA can win the 2014 elections.

The story behind the'beggar' video on radio

Roodepoort — Readers of the Record and those who follow the news on the website looklocal might have caught wind of the fact that the investigating team regularly releases short investigative video clips on topics of in-terest.On 26 July journalist Riaan van Zyl was on

the receiving end when Channel Islam Interna-tional (CII) interviewed him about the team’s making of the A day in the life of a beggar vid-eo (watch the “A day in the life of a beggar” video on www.roodepoortrecord.co.za).

CII, who punts itself as the world’s biggest Islamic international radio station, spoke to Van Zyl extensively about not only the mak-ing of the video but also delved deeper into the story regarding the phenomenon of beggars in the Roodepoort area.

13 injured in head-on collisionRoodepoort — At least 13 people were injured after a minibus taxi collided with a light motor vehicle at the corner of Constantia Boulevard and Hendrik Potgieter Road on Wednesday morning 31 July.

According to ER24’s Vanessa Jackson, “There were 12 people in the taxi. Three pa-tients suffered severe injuries and had to be transported to hospital. A patient’s arm had to be amputated partially while the other two patients suffered back and neck injuries with possible broken arms.

“The remaining eight passengers including

the driver suffered moderate injuries, and the driver was trapped and had to be freed. The driver of the light motor vehicle suffered minor injuries. “It seems that the minibus was travel-ling along Hendrik Potgieter Road towards Life Flora Clinic when it collided head-on with the light motor vehicle and rolled slightly.”

Medical personnel on the scene were from the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) and Joburg Emergency Services.

First to arrive on scene was ER24’s A1 As-sist crew who alerted authorities about the ac-cident.VIDEO: Our divided Roodepoort

Roodepoort — In light of the upcoming 2014 national elections, the Record investigative team set out to collect residents’ opinions on the political state of South Africa writes MATHILDE MYBURGH.

On Friday 2 August the team, consisting of Clinton Botha (director), Mathilde Myburgh (audio director) and Riaan van Zyl (present-er, vehicle disc jockey) hit the road with loud music, cigarettes and a shooting schedule. The team planned on visiting various areas in Roodepoort, interviewing residents from the Rand Leases informal settlement, Davidson-ville, Witpoortjie and Wilro Park areas, and Princess informal settlement.

Four basic questions about the state of the country and the effectiveness of the current government were formulated the day before.

To start the day, the group gathered at Ri-aan’s house for coffee and fi nal discussions. Clinton had to relearn camera-tripod basics while Riaan almost left his cellphone behind.

Although nobody set out to learn who was voting for whom, some residents felt the need to express either their disappointment or joy with the current governing party. We found that some residents were very critical about speaking to the press about politics, while oth-ers completely avoided our eager faces. Luck-ily, the residents of the Rand Leases informal settlement shared our eagerness to broadcast Roodepoort’s opinions. Generally, these resi-dents were not outright disappointed in the current state of affairs but felt that change and

better management would be necessary in fu-ture – they came to the collective conclusion that they need houses and therefore, change is inevitable. Davidsonville residents were wary but later cooperated well in documenting their previous election experiences. Tihan van der Walt (video editor) helped to gather more resi-dents for comment.

“They [the party] campaign for a month or two, fulfi lling all sorts of promises in our com-munity, and thereafter we [the residents] cam-paign for service delivery for the next four or fi ve years.”

Back in Witpoortjie, we also spoke to a few locals about their feelings towards election time. After talking to a big group of residents the team regrouped at the offi ce to sort out footage for editing and change camera batter-ies. Rather, whole cameras and their memory cards, batteries and bags had to be sorted and redistributed as every journalist apparently lost their property in the runaround. While Tihan laughed and stayed behind to merge footage with audio, we took our sorted equipment out to Wilro Park and the Princess informal settle-ment for further investigation.

Some residents in these areas were noncha-lant about politics and some, as in Princess, grouped together to discuss their overall disap-pointment. To the tune of Lana Del Rey, we took one fi nal trip to the offi ce and made up our minds about our next big adventure.Watch the video on www.roodepoortrecord.co.za.

13 people were injured following a head-on collision involving a taxi and light motor vehicle on Hendrik Potgieter Road on Wednesday morning 31 July.

City of Joburg vehicle causes collisionWitpoortjie — An offi cial City of Johannes-burg vehicle is alleged to have caused an ac-cident in Witpoortjie on the early afternoon of Wednesday 31 July. Nobody was injured in the incident.

At the corner of Corlett Avenue and Ham Street, a City of Joburg (CoJ) Administration vehicle collided with a maroon Mercedes-Benz after a truck obstructed its view. The accident occurred around 11.30am and JMPD offi cers arrived at 12.05pm. One of ER24’s Help24 ve-hicles was on scene and bystanders explained how the accident occurred.

The driver of the CoJ vehicle, Gabriel Mut-sharini alleges that the elderly man in the Mer-cedes was speeding down Corlett Avenue when he was trying to turn into Corlett Avenue from Ham Street.

“I did not see the vehicle coming as the JRA truck was obstructing my view.

“The other man’s vehicle lost control, which tells me he was speeding before we collided.”

According to both drivers and eyewitnesses, a Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) truck was parked on Corlett Avenue just before Ham Street in the direction of South Road, obstructing the view of traffi c from both sides. The JRA had just fi nished mending a pothole on Corlett Avenue and left the scene before the Record’s arrival.

The driver of the Mercedes and his son plan on claiming damages from the parties involved, they told the Record.

“My father came down Corlett Avenue from the bridge and the other car ran the stop street [sic].

“The truck must have blocked his view of the busy road,” the son said.

There is no evidence in the Record’s posses-sion to support the claims of speeding.

Dispatches from MeerkatsklipDewethenasia — Ah-hum. (Plenty clearing of the throats and singing Disney songs out loud while using your fi ngers to plug both your ears.)

Goeie genade. My little boeghoe-addled breintjie knew

that the run-up to the election was going to be highly entertaining but this is outdoing my highest expectations. And we haven’t even gone nasionaal yet.

So having the day off at my own koerant, Die Veldbrand, I go and visit some of my col-leagues at the Record and even they admit that things are becoming surreal.

Seg daai bles reportertjie to his editor that it only can be here that a politician actually

phones the paper to tell them about his court appearance! Now the fat is in the fi re.

The outjies from the ANC say Dewes is ly-ing while Dewes blames them for politicising the affair.

Meanwhile someone did or didn’t get klapped and everyone’s acting holier than thou. Regardless, dis groot sports and if this is an indication of what’s to come then we can pack our picnic mandjies and cancel our satel-lite TV subscriptions.

Which brings me to my next point. I was really deurmekaar as to who to vote for next year but I made up my mind.

(No, don’t worry, I am not going to pro-mote any specifi c party.)

The most entertaining party will get my vote and so far locally it’s a draw between Dave ‘Donnerbos’ Dewes’ DA and the bra comrades of Florida’s ANC.

I think next time the newspaper has space to fi ll they maybe can publish a collage of Dewes’ greatest hits (literally!) and misses. Call it something like “50 shades of Dave”.

(Ok that wasn’t my idea but a bloody good one nonetheless.) If, and this is starting to look like a big if, he runs again next year may-be he must make his campaign slogan “Vote Dave Dewes – If only for sheer entertainment value”. Yes readers, their pets and all lawyers out there in this dreary rat race, it seems like politics is still the best entertainment as long

as you do not take it seriously. (Talking ‘bout the rat race, a very wise Rab-

bi commented the other day that you must remember that even if you are number one in the rat race you are still a rat. Some nice ad-vice for politicians there.)

And to end off. My “SA Law Enforcement Stupid People Shouldn’t Breed Award” goes to the SAPS for having 1 448 members with criminal records.

As Arnold Geerts used to say “Fêntêstiek Naas, Fêntestiek”.

Anyway, until next week. I am off to make some popcorn and watch

the idiots on ‘A view from the House’ (SABC Parliamentary programme).

More complaints regarding MetrobusGillian Stacey (email):I am a very irate Metrobus Service passenger. I use the Witpoortjie Metrobus every day with major frustration. They are an extremely unreli-able bus service that come and go as they want. We pay for this disgusting service.

They just do not care, if you phone the Metrobus service they are outright rude. You

want to complain but you feel what the hell, is it worth it? Nobody listens or cares.

All I can say is what a mess. This morning I waited from six in the morn-

ing, the next bus was at eight o’clock with a clapped out bus from Noah’s ark. Is this a fi rst world bus service, defi nitely not.

True grit needed on sandy shoresCliff Buchler (email):So Sandy Bay, the Cape’s favourite hang-out for nudists, will become sandless if something dras-tic is not done. There is a plan afoot to transport sand from Hout Bay, known for its voluminous dunes, to the once-pristine beach to save it from disappearing. And leaving the naked creatures to tread water in the icy Atlantic and sunbathe on the rocks.

Could never fathom how a nude body copes with sand fi lling every crevice, and acting as sandpaper on tender skin. I mean, since birth it is treated with Johnson’s baby powder and Vaseline, a far cry from gritty sea sand.

So what makes a normal human species, ac-customed to wearing clothes, decide to display privates and go public?

A few years ago, Wifey and I were dared by some clown to go see for ourselves. OK, we were still young, daring and dumb.

After much agony, we set off to expose the exposed.

Dressed only in swimming costumes and T-shirts we took the long walk among thick bush and shrub from Llandudno that brought us onto the beautiful beach. It was still early, so no bodies were in evidence.

We found an ideal spot in the dense shrub-bery, not unlike a game hide, from where we could espy the naked species without us having to do any shedding ourselves.

The wait wasn’t too long. Three pretty ladies stripped down to nothing and proceeded to lay on the sand a spit away from us. Wifey al-lowed me a quick look, then ordered me to turn around and stare at the bushes.

While in this unfair position I heard Wifey gasp.

Child (9) diesRoodepoort — A nine-year-old boy died after a motor vehicle ran him over in Horizon View on Friday night 2 August.

According to Netcare 911 spokesperson Santi Steinmann, “Paramedics responded to an accident on Pamela Street in Horizon View, Roodepoort on Friday night.

“Upon their arrival on scene they found that a nine-year-old boy was knocked over by a mo-tor vehicle.

“Tragically the boy died at the scene due to the extensive injuries he had sustained during the accident.

“Exact details to the cause of the accident and preceding events will remain the subject of a police investigation.”

Michael Leon of the Horizon View Block-watch described the incident as a tragedy. “The incident happened at around 6.15pm. The young boy was cycling down Drysdale Avenue when he was struck by a motor vehicle at the intersection of Drysdale Avenue and Pamela Street.

“Metro Police and emergency services were on the scene within a few minutes of the ac-cident. Members of the Horizon View Block-watch were dispatched to try and locate the child’s parents as well as manage the traffi c at the scene. Emergency medical personnel bat-tled for over an hour to save the young boy’s life but unfortunately he succumbed to his in-juries and passed away at the scene of the ac-cident.

“The Horizon View Blockwatch extends its sincerest condolences to the parents and family of this young child. The thoughts and prayers of the entire community are with them during this diffi cult time.

“The circumstances surrounding the inci-dent were not immediately clear and a police investigation is in progress.

“The unfortunate incident once again high-lighted the importance of instilling a culture of road safety among our children from an early age. Wearing an approved bicycle helmet, high visibility clothing and obeying traffi c signs are of the utmost importance.

“The Horizon View Blockwatch thanks eve-ryone involved in managing the incident on Friday night. These include the JMPD, SAPS, emergency services, patrollers from our neigh-bouring block watch and residents who pro-vided coffee and support at the scene.”

Evil Ouklip Road 'strikes again'

Roodepoort — Paramedics and emergency ser-vices rushed to the scene of yet another serious accident on Ouklip Road after a blue Volkswa-gen Golf crashed into a tree early on Friday morning 2 August.

According to Netcare 911 spokesperson Santi Steinmann, “The man is believed to be in his early 30s and sustained serious to critical injuries. He was transported to a nearby hos-pital.”

Steinmann also confi rmes that the man was trapped inside his vehicle and had to be freed by the Jaws of Life.

At the Record’s arrival Joburg Emergency Services (EMS) were seen cutting both sides of the vehicle to free the man.

“It is still unclear what had happened, but the cause of the accident will be investigated,” Steinmann adds.

Other authorities that have arrived on scene were the Johannesburg Metro Police Depart-ment (JMPD), the South African Police Ser-vice (SAPS) and ER24 as well as its A1 Assist tow truck crew.

to get through this sad period.”Oosthuizen en Botha’s death not being the

fi rst on this road, the Record told the councillor that it is clear that something has to be done to stop fatal accidents from occurring again.

Asked how she thought this could be done, she replied, “My concerns regarding Ouklip are the reckless driving and speeding of motor-ists and I want residents to know that since this issue was brought to my attention in 2012, my ward committee and I have tried to come up with solutions for this road.

“I have asked the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) to conduct speed trap-ping and I hear some residents will warn each other about these speed traps, which defeats

the purpose. I have asked JMPD to conduct roadblocks and they confi rmed that they had pulled over a number of intoxicated people. I have requested Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) for stop streets and their response was that it would cause more accidents. I have re-quested a traffi c circle at the corner of Graph-ite and Ouklip Road but it was turned down.”

The councillor is hopeful that her meeting with the MMC will be positive.

“I want to ensure residents that I have been working on the Ouklip Road issue continuous-ly and believe that the MMC can help in this regard; but it could be a long process.”

Clarke also confi rmed that there will be a public meeting on Wednesday 14 August at the Klein Helderkruin Old Age Home at 7pm to discuss the Ouklip Road issue.

Kilburn shop: more complaintsFlorida — As expected, more residents fi led their complaints about the bit-of-everything shop in Kilburn Shopping Centre with the Re-cord.

According to complaints to date it is alleged that the shop abducts clothing. A resident pre-viously complained that his trousers, handed in for alterations at this shop, went missing by the time he went to fetch it a day later. A cer-tain Mr Grobler shared his similar experience with the Record.

“When I dropped by the shop one of the employees was sitting outside on the sidewalk, not even behind the counter,” he explained, unsure whether this man was an employee, manager or even the owner.

“Nobody was behind that counter and even-tually he came over to assist me.

“I paid R30 on that day and the man ex-plained that the balance could be paid when I

collect my jacket as it all depends on the work they need to do – thus, the second and fi nal instalment was not a certain, prediscussed amount.

“I gave it in anyway because you struggle to fi nd places that do clothing alterations these days.”

Mr Grobler left his jacket with the man and he explained that he could fetch it the follow-ing day. By the time he returned, the jacket had left the premises and was not ready for collec-tion.

“I was furious.”After trying to ascertain its whereabouts

and insisting on collecting it, the shop staff ex-plained to Mr Grobler that the alterations are outsourced to a man near Westgate Shopping Centre and that he was to fetch it there.

Wholesaler outraged at Cattanach's statementWitpoortjie — A sales and marketing manager from a big pet accessory wholesaler is very upset about Mandy Cattanach, Roodepoort SPCA manager and inspector’s seemingly “lopsided” comment about supporting pet shops, as reported on 11 July.

Wayne McKay, Sales and Marketing Man-ager for Wilgo Enterprises that deals in pet products and accessories, contacted the Re-cord with his complaint. This follows previous Record reports of Cattanach saying that resi-dents should not “even buy any accessories or foods from the pet shops that [they] disagree with”.

In the Record’s recorded conversation with Cattanach for the particular article, she com-mented on current SPCA dealings with the West Rand Pet and Bird Farm.

“You should not support any pet shop,” she explained, “as there exists no need for one in our area”.

“If you support a pet shop, you are support-ing puppy and kitten trade.”

McKay believes that these comments “are totally uncalled for.

“Having a problem with one particular pet shop and taking it out on the industries of animal trade and animal products is, to me, completely unacceptable.

“It is this sort of comment that will have residents moving away from buying legitimate products from pet shops, thus jeopardising our company’s imports and the businesses of others.”

McKay told the Record that he had ap-proached Cattanach with his complaint and she allegedly denied the quotes, saying that “it was misprinted [sic]”.

“I am surprised that no other law-abiding pet shop owners, wholesalers or distributors have given their comment on this subject yet,” McKay stated.

Flooding on Albertina SisuluPrincess — While contractors are hard at work trying to sort out electricity issues on Albertina Sisulu Road (previously Main Reef Road) they have to contend with water gushing like a foun-tain.

On the afternoon of Monday 5 August at around 2.15pm a water pipe burst, according to eyewitnesses.

“A water pipe had burst moments ago and it’s causing havoc,” contractor Corné Herbst told the Record, looking at the water gushing down the road.

“We were contracted recently to sort out the power supply to the businesses in the area,” Herbst said, pointing out his crew at work along the road. Businesses have been com-plaining about not having electricity for the past few months, both to the Record and to the offi cials involved.

The workers could be seen on the side of Albertina Sisulu Road, digging holes for new electricity connections, each one dangerously close to the surging water.

“Joburg Water allegedly is on its way to turn off the water supply.”

Onlookers and residents of the Princess in-formal settlement seemed confused, and trucks and other vehicles had no choice but to drive through the water. Some people stopped in business driveways to fi gure out an alternative route. No one could confi rm what time Joburg Water technicians would arrive.

Herbst said that his team was working on the power box of a church on Albertina Si-sulu Road and that they would work their way down the road as soon as it’s clear.See photos of the havoc at www.roodepoor-trecord.co.za.

Roodepoort SAPS step it upRoodepoort — The weekend of 26 to 28 July saw Roodepoort SAPS up their game.

Over a two-day period (26 and 27 July) the Roodepoort SAPS held a total of fi ve road-blocks in crime hotspots, being areas such as Witpoortjie, Horison and Roodekrans. A total

of 84 cars and 181 persons were searched.Furthermore six drug-related arrests, fi ve

illegal-liquor arrests, and an arrest relating to an armed robbery were made.

A large number of counterfeit DVDs were confi scated.

Illegal mining receives a blowRoodepoort — A team of senior police and min-ing offi cials, assisted by representatives of the mining industry, cracked down on a vast illegal mining operation in Roodepoort on 23 July.

The land in Roodepoort previously had been used as a gold processing plant for Dur-ban Roodepoort Deep Mine and was left in a completely unrehabilitated state. Illegal miners started their activities and sold their gold to il-licit buyers.

Despite various raids by authorities in the past, it has become a massive operation.

The recent raid came in the light of the com-mittee on illegal mining established by the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR). It consists of various role-players, regulatory au-thorities, the industry and unions. This com-mittee has been hard at work getting all role-players to commit to the process.

“The problem is that after arrests are made it seems that the Prosecuting Authority does not see the urgency to have the offenders pros-ecuted. They are given bail and they continue their practice,” says Nico Pienaar, director of the Aggregate and Sand Producers Association of Southern Africa (Aspasa), an organisation that is an active member of the committee on illegal mining.

He says the South African Police Service (SAPS) is working hard on this problem and the offi cials of the DMR are committed and see the value of protecting the industry. For many years

Aspasa has raised the issue of illegal mining in the aggregate and sand industry, which not only threatens the livelihood of legal operators, but also compromises the safety of the workers, the environment and the surrounding communities’ future land use. Aspasa has played an active role since the establishment of the committee.

“When the DMR approached us for help with the West Rand problem, we contacted some of our local members and the response was very favourable. WG Wearne agreed to let the team use one of its big front-end loaders to fl atten the area where the illegal gold mining was taking place and supplied two machines to help destroy the illegal mining site by levelling the material. This was a token of the industry’s commitment to working with the regulators,” says Pienaar. He adds that the next focus area will be on illegal sand, gravel and aggregate mining in the wider Gauteng region.

“Aspasa is working on a document that deals with issues such as borrow pits, road building material and municipal quarries. This document will show the unequal treatment of the formal commercial industry that has to compete with the informal and less controlled industry. The rules of engagement clearly are not equal and the argument is that if lessor rules apply for a particular section of the industry, then these also must apply for the formal commercial op-eration. There cannot be two sets of standards. Pain has to be felt by all,” Pienaar says.

Horizon View — Drugs as well as a knife are among the many items confi scated by police during a drug raid at West Ridge High School on Wednesday morning 31 July.

Roodepoort South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Colonel Chris Wilken confi rmed that police confi scated 18 sticks of dagga, a knife, six cigarette lighters as well as few pairs of scissors after searching at least 18 classrooms. A total of nine SAPS, four Johan-nesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) of-fi cers, six members of the Roodepoort Youth Desk and a representative of the Department of Community Safety in Gauteng were in-volved in the bust.

“We arrested a 17-year-old pupil who was

in possession of drugs. He will be taken to the police station where he will be released in his parents’ custody.”

A reliable source told the Record, “At least seven pupils in Grades 8 to 10 were caught and taken to the principal’s offi ce”.

The raid was said to be pre-planned and educators knew beforehand.

These pupils are believed to be regular of-fenders and claim they deal in drugs to make money to buy textbooks.

“We are a government school and textbooks are free,” the source told the Record.

“Drug awareness is countrywide; and we will be identifying other schools in the area at any given time,” Wilken concluded.

Police keep an eye on the anti-illegal mining activities.

Akteur spreekRoodies toeoor dwelms

Speaking at a moment's noticeFlorida — On the evening of Tuesday 16 July the members of Florida Toastmasters Club aimed high and searched for the hero within, according to vice president of public relations, Dawn Hemming.

“There are two kinds of heroes. Heroes who shine in the face of the greatest adversity, who perform an amazing feat in a diffi cult situation and heroes who live among us, who do their work unceremoniously and make a difference in the lives of others.”

As Toastmasters they ensure that throughout their speeches they demonstrate what they refer to as ‘word power’, which is one of the key fea-tures of effective communication, according to Hemming. “A good speech is a conversation.”

Mark van Vuuren became the hero of his own story and was awarded the trophy for the best prepared speech entitled Money is the root of all evil. He applied his communication skills and formed vivid images in members’ minds to cre-ate an awareness that money is the barometer of a society’s virtue and that they should enquire, educate and act against corruption to redeem this virtue.

“Organisations and communities are net-works of conversations and the quality of our conversation determines our relationship.

“Crackerjack conversationalists are those people with whom others love to converse and that generally have good memories.

“They pay attention to others and take in what they learn about others, and use that in-formation to engage them in conversation.”

A Toastmasters club provides a good arena in which to prepare for social moments. Treas-ure Mushwana, one of the Toastmasters’ local guests is pursuing a degree in music education and was awarded the trophy for the best im-promptu speech as he identifi ed some of the characteristics of genuine heroism.

“Impromptu speeches prepare us to think on our feet and to speak on the spot. Unexpected questions from a potential employer or even a business associate can spring up during an in-terview or an audition. Answering those ques-tions without defensiveness or tactlessness is an important life skill.

According to a press release sent to the Re-cord, Malcolm has made his mark in the coun-try’s history by introducing musical artists such as Led Zeppelin to the youth revolution. In 1995 he also called on former President Nelson Mandela to present the Webb Ellis Trophy to Francois Pienaar. The show will run between 9 and 25 August at the Roodepoort Theatre (Promusica). Bookings can be made either by phone or at the theatre. Tickets cost R85, and students and pensioners pay R65.

Journalists view unbanned fi lm

City and Suburban — Journalists were invited to a press screening of the infamous fi lm, Of Good Report to see for themselves how ac-curate the ratings were. On the afternoon of 30 July The Bioscope in City and Suburban hosted a group of journalists that were eager to judge the banning and eventual ratings of this noir fi lm.

As the lights dimmed for the fi lm to start, a banner appeared on the wall reading “Un-banned” before the opening credits started rolling. “Unbelievable,” was the only way that Claudi Mailovich, journalist for Rap-port, could summarise her experience after the

screening.“I honestly don’t get what the child pornog-

raphy allegations were all about,” a few of the journalists, Record journalist included, agreed.

The fi lm, starring Mothusi Magano and Pet-ronella Tshuma in the lead roles, told the story of teacher Sithole (Magano) who falls in love with Nolitha (Tshuma), not knowing that she is his student. The fi lm was banned by the Film and Publication Board (FPB) on the grounds of it containing or implying child pornogra-phy. FPB’s Prince Ndamase was quoted by Eyewitness News saying that “the legislation is very clear when it comes to child pornography.

“No exception is made.” Journalists were left speculating what led to their change of heart. Qubeka was clear when he stated that the fi lm was meant to spark public debate.

draf.

Regs: Waarheen gaan jy?

Augustus teen Menlopark XV gespeel.

Penny Heyns to pay Roodepoort a visit soon

[email protected]

Florida — It has been confi rmed that 1996 Olympic gold medallist in Atlanta and the country’s female swimming sensation, Penny Heyns is coming to Roodepoort.

Florida Swimming Club (FSC) head coach Tracey Hemphill confi rmed it last week. “In late September (Saturday 28 and Sunday 29) the internationally renowned Penny will be hosting a two-day swimming clinic with our swimmers and those interested at the clubhouse (Allen Glen High School) from 9am to 4.30pm”.

Tracey added, “We are absolutely honoured that Penny will be taking the time to slot us into her very hectic schedule.

“She’s been an inspiration to everybody in the swimming world and is probably South Africa’s most successful swimmer yet.

“Besides her being a director of her own com-pany, Penny is also on the International Ath-letes Representation Board.”

Penny broke 14 individual world records du-ing her career and retired from professional swimming in 2001.

She has since grown into a highly sought-after professional speaker, her offi cial website www.pennyheyns.com confi rmed.

She also has been described as “the greatest female breaststroker of the 20th century”.

Penny took gold in both the 100 metres and 200 metres breaststroke events during the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games and became the only woman in Olympic history to do so.

She was also the only swimmer to win gold med-als for South Africa in the pool at this Olympic Games.

Marianne Kriel was the only other South Af-rican female siwmmer to have received a medal at the Atlanta Games but in the women’s 100 metres backstroke event.

Penny then took bronze in the women’s 100 metres breaststroke event at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and she was the only South Af-rican female swimmer to have received a medal at these games.

At the time Terence Parkin was the only South African male to have received a medal in swimming when he took silver in the men’s 200 metres breaststroke event.

Swimmers interested in attending the Penny Heyns swimming clinic can contact Tracey on 083 399 1205.

GERHARD HORN

It’s easy to be cynical about Ford’s all-new tot-sized SUV, the EcoSport.

In essence it’s nothing more than a pumped-up Fiesta on stilts, which makes me wonder if its existence is strictly necessary in the fi rst place. Is there a demand for a fat Fiesta with a higher driving position?

I’m tempted to say no, but in my gut I know it’d be a lie. South Africa, and the rest of the world for that matter, is obsessed with SUVs, so Ford would be irresponsible not to get as much product into the market as possible.

For proof, we turn to India. Ford India experienced a 48% increase in sales in July compared to the same month in 2012. The reason? The EcoSport was launched there recently and it’s selling faster than any hot cake I’ve ever heard of.

I think my initial negative reaction to this car has to do with the specifi c market it plays in. At this point, I’m not entirely sure a segment exists for it, as it has no direct competitor. Ford sees the EcoSport going up against the Nissan Juke, Suzuki Jimny, Daihatsu Terios and, strangely, the Citroën DS4. I don’t really see the EcoSport as a direct competitor to any of the above for various reasons. In fact, I think Ford may have just jump-started an entirely new segment.

So, it’s a good thing it stands out in a crowd. The overfed Fiesta styling really works in my humble opinion and I think Ford will sell a bunch of these things based on aesthetic appeal alone.

A stunning body, however, only makes for a good fi rst impression. Luckily the stuff beneath the skin should keep on impressing for long after the cus-tomer fi rst falls in love with the EcoSport.

The fi rst and most important thing you need to know is that the EcoSport isn’t as mean as it looks. There’s no four-wheel-drive option, which means the car will be completely fl ustered by anything more treacherous than a shopping-mall curb.

On the fl ipside, it is rather nippy and easy to drive around town. The range of petrol and diesel engines are perfectly suited to a city commute and won’t ruin you fi nancially every time you need to fi ll the car up.

Three engines are currently available: two petrol powertrains and a turbocharged diesel. The petrol range kicks off with Ford’s global 1.5-litre four cylinder, which delivers peak power of 82kW and 138Nm of torque. Ford claims an average fuel

consumption of 6.5 litres/100km. This engine is available with a fi ve-speed manual or six-speed Powershift automatic transmission. It’s also the only engine in the range available with a self-shifter.

Topping the petrol range is Ford’s multiple award-winning 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine. This powerful and frugal powertrain delivers 92kW and 170Nm of torque and has a claimed fuel consumption fi gure of 5.7 litres/100km.

The 1.5-litre TDCi diesel engine, while not being particularly powerful (66kW/205Nm), does have enough oomph to keep up with traffi c in the city and on the highway. If frugality is your thing, it’s defi nitely the one to go for as Ford claims a fi gure of 4.6 litres/100km on the combined cycle.

Interior-wise, there are one or two issues, but •ad

EcoSport busts new nicheEcoSport busts new niche

more on that later. There are a few good things that need mentioning fi rst.

First up is Ford’s marvellous Sync system, which is standard across the range. We’ve written on this system before, but it deserves another mention as it really is one of the best infotainment systems out there. You can play music via cell phone, an auxiliary input or USB port, but the best thing about it is the fact that the lady who lives in the dashboard actually understands a South African accent.

The cabin also has a number of practical storage spaces and a glove box that can keep six cans of beverage cool. The rear seats also fold fl at in a 60:40 split, which increases the boot space to 705 litres.

Unfortunately, it’s also the interior that lets the

car down a bit. Some models feature wind-down rear windows, which isn’t on for a car that costs R200 000 and up. Some of the fi nishes are a bit below par and the wind noise is a tad high, espe-cially on the highway. Not deal-breaking stuff, but frustrating nonetheless.

At the price it’s hard to fault the EcoSport. The base model costs just under R200 000, while a top-of-the-range variant is just R50 000 more. If you’re looking for something cheaper than the Juke, less hardcore and way more comfortable than the Jimny and more modern than the Terios, this is the car for you. It currently has no direct competitor, but if it does well, and I think it will, the competition will soon b e lining up to get a slice of its business.

Toyota updates its macho men|WEST | | PAGE 2 | 2WEEK 32

I LIKE my vehicles like Africa - tough! Luckily, you don’t get stronger than the Land

Cruiser 70 Series, which was launched early this year. But now, Toyota has added a large oil burner to the mix to power this big barge.

The new Euro 5-compliant diesel engine is a hefty 4.5-litre V8 turbo powertrain. Capable of produc-ing 151kW of power at 3 400rpm and mammoth torque of 430Nm available from as little as 1 200rpm, it literally can idle over anything with very little effort on its behalf.

As the undisputed off-road king, it goes where very few can and now that it’s equipped with this monstrous V8, it cements itself as supreme ruler.

While everything else in the world seems to be getting soft, the rugged Land Cruiser hasn’t lost any of its macho capabilities.

The two-speed transfer case and part-time four-

STUART MOIR wheel-drive system with manual free-wheeling front hubs are still present and the wheels are driven by a fi ve-speed manual transmission.

While the engine technology is modern, the styling is straight out of the 70s. The boxy design and old-school interior lends itself perfectly to a Burt Reynolds, moustache-wearing bygone era. A few modern features have been adopted though, like on-board navigation and a stereo system incorporating a CD player and an auxiliary USB port.

With the new V8 fi tted, fuel consumption is pegged at a claimed 11.5 litres/100km. You’ll have to be on your best driving behaviour to get anywhere near that claim though, because truthfully the Land Cruiser couldn’t be concerned about curbing its drinking problem for pricey fuel. Hence it comes with a 130-litre fuel tank.

The other member of the Land Cruiser family to get a nip and tuck recently was the FJ Cruiser,

which has more willingly embraced the modern era. Embodying retro styling, this big bruiser knows how to grab attention.

It’s available in two versions - Standard and Sports Cruiser. The latter is distinguished by its Raven Black paint scheme and extra chrome detailing, which includes chrome trim on the high-mounted air intake and FJ-styled door scuff plates.

The FJ is anything but a poser. Housing a mas-sive 4.0-litre V6 petrol engine and a fi ve-speed automatic gearbox, this big boy isn’t scared to hit the dirt and obstacles, thanks to its part-time four-wheel-drive, electronically activated rear dif-ferential lock and switchable Active Traction Control technology.

The FJ’s interior is incredibly well specced for such a hardcore cruiser, with specifi cation including a steering wheel with remote audio and Bluetooth controls, integrated audio/CD sound system with

six speakers and iPod connector, external audio and USB connectors, a powerful air-conditioning system, extra power socket and cruise control. The FJ also boasts Toyota’s rear-monitor system, which integrates a rear-facing video camera, electro-chromatic interior rear-view mirror and video screen integrated into the rear mirror to offer ease of reversing on all models.

These rugged men of the motoring world both come with a 3-year/100 000km warranty. All versions of the FJ Cruiser also come with a5-year/90 000km service plan.

KTM 1190 - have your cake and eat it

PHOTO: KTM SA

STUART MOIR

KTM has destroyed perceptions of what you can do with an adventure bike. Previously, the company was all about touring and taking on the great outdoors with its comfortable suspen-sion setup and higher ride height for off-road capabilities.

However, since the launch of the formidable 1190, people have had to re-evaluate what they wanted from an adventure model, because this Austrian machine is everything rolled into one good-looking package, meaning you can now have your cake and eat it too.

I recently put the 1190 to the test by taking it around Kyalami. Now it’s by no means a track bike, given its high stance and upright ride position. But it does have superbike DNA embodied in it. The massive two-cylinder, four-stroke engine is a slightly tuned-down version of KTM’s sports bike, the RC8.

Producing 110kW of power, this tall giant can reach speeds of well over 250km/h. It’s diffi cult to fathom that a bike with so much Dakar herit-age and adventure in its genes could tackle a race track so convincingly, so much so that I had a ZX10 rider fl abbergasted at just how quick the bike was, particularly out the corners when I laid down the power. Being blessed with such rampant

acceleration didn’t hurt either. The fact that it is packed with technology, and

rider’s aids to assist, meant that I could push the bike to the limit, well, my limit, and whenever things looked like they were going to get messy, the trac-tion control would step in. But not in a ‘horrendous stepmother taking away all your privileges’ kind of way. Instead, it gently nurtures you and straightens you out. Most of the time I didn’t even feel the traction control working and only saw the light fl ashing on the odo cluster.

Weighing in at 230kg, it’s bulky but easily manoeuvrable. The fact that I could arrive at the track with a luggage bag and two camping chairs strapped to the pannier box bracket also highlighted its practicality.

Of course, the KTM wouldn’t be living up to its name if there wasn’t some dirt riding involved. Naturally, I went searching for some gravel-laden roads, slapped the bike into off-road mode and headed down the road, leaving a giant dust cloud in my wake.

The engine is ‘business-like smooth’ and open-ing up the throttle makes a throaty groan. The bike really does feel planted on almost any surface and it’s diffi cult to fault.

So, is it an adventure bike, a superbike or what? Well, this motorcycle is anything you want it to be. It’s just housed in an adventure- bike skin. •ad

TAXIES’ SUPERHUMAN PILOTS

E-TOLL TRUTH TWISTED

Dear Editor,

Minibus taxies in South Africa are a dozen and have quite a few things in common: from bald tyres, non-existent upholstery, shoddy brakes, very loud audio systems to ever-honking hooters.

The saying “All taxi drivers come from the same driving school” is most probably true, except that it’s not quite a driving school, more like learning by osmosis.

Firstly, we need to admit that taxi drivers are skilled operators - they have mastered the dubi-ous skill of fl ying four-wheeled vehicles rather than driving them. These are confi dent men of exceptionally high spirits and short tempers. They have perfected multitasking in a way no woman ever could. They are most adept at swearing at other motorists, swearing at their own passengers (after they have paid of course), sweet talking those policemen who dare to confront them and their sudden unannounced halts that make the motorists behind hit the roof. Spare a thought for the passengers who usually fi nd themselves

catapulted into the brace position. What motorists may not know about these

taxi-plane pilots is that they are mathematical wizards, able to count the fair of a full fl ight right down to the last cent without taking their eyes off their passengers as they steer along the pavement with their knees, all the while hooting at trees, pedestrians and birds.

It is unheard of for a taxi-plane pilot to bring his contraption to a screeching halt simply because someone short-changed him by 20c. All in all, taxi-plane pilots don’t give a hoot about anything on the roads and this includes traffi c lights and a variety of other road signs intended to keep driv-ers safe. The concept of road safety is as alien to them as is the idea of showing some kind of courtesy to other road users.

Anonymous

Dear Editor,

If C van Breda’s fi rst letter was preposterous, his latest one (e-toll debate rages on in week 30’s issue) is absolutely shocking.

In this letter, he makes a slyly worded accusa-tion against the Opposition Against Urban Tolling Alliance (OUTA), implying that its allegations regard-

ing the use and application of e-toll income were found by the High Court and the Supreme Court of Appeal to be “simply untrue.”

This is absolute nonsense and without any fact or foundation.

At no point in this judgement did Judge Vorster rule that the points put forward by OUTA were un-true - they were merely rejected for other technical reasons which are now under appeal.

It is quite shameful and dishonest that Van Breda

would attempt to twist the words of the Honour-able Judge to suit his own misplaced agenda and presumably that of Sanral, of which he seems to be a willing and vocal stooge.

But then Van Breda has not been shy in twist-ing the truth and putting a false spin on the whole Sanral plan to rob motorists.

A visit to the OUTA website will show that fuel levies are indeed the most effi cient method of collecting funds for road or highway infrastructure and proves another lie to Van Breda’s claims: that e-tolling is more effective as well as answering the questions he posed in his letter.

He insults all those defending their rights with the disparaging term “anti-tolling brigade,” implying some small, rag-tag bunch of disorganised rabble.

Well, we have news for you, Van: those against e-tolling are represented not only by a large union, the offi cial opposition party, numerous trade and industry bodies, the disabled, the Automobile Association and church groups, but many other organisations too numerous to mention, as well as hundreds of thousands of motorists who simply refuse to buy e-tags.

The shocking manner in which the corrupt and dysfunctional ANC government has introduced e-tolling through a cover company that is veiled in secrecy, is in fact the fi rst step of Van Breda’s “slipping into the abyss of a third-world country.”

Given the litany of bribes, corruption and back-handers, some might say we are already there.

Sanral’s plans to cover the country with e-tolls and provide a golden-goose gravy train for a host of unnamed leeches must be stopped at all costs.

The country simply cannot afford it.

NO PAYMENT, NO LICENCE

Dear Editor,

I read with interest your article Sherlock Holmes got stuffed in SA in week 30’s issue.

I have recently received a speeding fi ne from the Cape Town municipality for a car, which is reg-istered in my name, being driven by my son who is temporarily working in there, which was delivered

by regular mail to my postbox. My son refuses to pay as he says that use of

regular postal delivery is not legal. However, I am currently renewing my driver’s

licence and I have been told that I will not be issued a new one by the Boksburg authorities if there are any unpaid fi nes outstanding.

Your comments will be very much appreciated as I am no longer employed.

Riding safe in the right environmentRiding safe in the right environment

The controlled environment allows you to ride with individuals at your skill level and with knowledgeable marshals on hand

STUART MOIR

•ad

The two-seater machine is prepped and ready. Photo: Clinton Pienaar

Two-wheel riding is dangerous. It’s a very clinical form of transportation and more often than not, unforgiving.

You see, when you get behind the wheel of a car, you are placed in a cocoon of safety and comfort. From the reinforced body to the abundance of airbags laying in waiting, ready to save you should you be involved in a collision.

Furthermore, if you run off the road in a car, it doesn’t automatically translate into personal injury. A bike, on the other hand, does!

I’ve grown up on two wheels and could prob-ably ride before I could crawl, but these days I’m rather reluctant to get on a bike and ride on our roads, purely because motorists lack com-mon courtesy. People pull out in front of you and try and run you off the road because you’re overtaking them. All these unnecessary evils have made me cut down on my two-wheel time. Regrettably.

Ask anyone who has ever been riding with their friends and they will tell you, there is nothing more freeing than experiencing the open road on a mo-torcycle. But that’s where it’s best to leave it - as a Sunday ride.

I refuse to commute on a bike because of the

dangers involved and the time you save skipping traffi c isn’t worth playing Russian Roulette with your life.

A couple of my friends who do ride motorcycles have converted to being track riders only. So on the odd weekend, when there is a track day organised by SA Biking, they head on out to enjoy this lifestyle they love, in a safe environment.

The thrills that come from racing around a track are thick and fast. What I personally love about track days is - while it might seem daunting sharing a track with ex-racers and some rather quick and experienced riders - that the controlled environ-

ment allows you to ride with individuals at your skill level and with knowledgeable marshals on hand to provide insightful tips, meaning that you quickly improve.

SA Biking Academy runs approximately 35 track days a year at various venues. Above this there are monthly road schools and for the seriously quick riders who want to gain an edge, there’s a one-on-one instruction that’s more intensive and allows you to fi ne-tune your riding style.

Clinton Pienaar has been running the SA Biking Academy for over 15 years and is a numerous

regional-title holder and still actively participates in various campaigns.

He recently allowed me to try the two-seater ex-perience, which is fast becoming a craze for those who attend the track days.

It’s simple. Suit up in full leathers and ride shotgun on the back of a pro for only R300. The feeling is exhilarating, fl ying around a track at mind-numbing speeds at the mercy of a skilled professional who fi nds the perfect lines through the corners, despite having a pillion on the back.

The feeling cannot be explained! The rush is unreal. You do two hot laps around the track with a time almost on par with the top professionals. Your adrenalin is pumping and while it’s not only an experience of a lifetime, as a rider it does help to highlight where the best braking markers are and just how quickly you can get around the circuit.

It’s a real eye-opener, partially for those individu-als who don’t know how to ride well or who never have at all, but have an urge to do so. Speaking to a few people who went on the back of the machine, many of them couldn’t contain their excitement while the others were still shaking in shock of what just happened. But they all have the same feedback with a massive grin stapled to their faces: “It’s an awesome experience!”

And I have to agree. If you have never been around a track and you’ve got the itch, I would say ditch the road for a bit and head down to the next track day and have fun and challenge yourself. At the end you won’t only walk away smiling, but you’ll also leave a better rider. Check out the video to see just how fu n it really is.
