University of Cambridge May – ID Week -2014

• LS1 Activities

• Manpower & OTP

• SCT M&O

The SCT during LS1 • Maintained at room temperature in nitrogen thoughout LS1,

until the ID volume is resealed • Ground fault monitoring • Backplane resistance measurements • Evaporative heater consolidation • New control & monitor system for heater pads • Installation of dual-output HOLAs (for FTK) • Power infrastructure – complete replacment of fans, Wiener

refurbishments • Expansion of DAQ

– New ROD & BOC production, and installation – New fibre mapping (still in progress for endcaps)

• The ROD BUSY issue – ROD f/w developments & FE simulator

• DAQ developments (inc TDAQ-05 & SLC6) • DCS developments (project migrations to linux) • New TX production

Installation of Ground fault monitor Pepe & Francisco (Valencia)

Safeguarding the SCT (in this case, at time of IBL insertion)

Evaporative heaters repairs & consoldiation to TCS, Plus resistance and isolation measurements Forest & Sergei (UCSC), Koichi & Jacek Also (for pix) Alex (Glasgow), Igor (Protvino)

DAQ expansion (new BOC & ROD productions) New fibre mappings (Bruce)

Jacek: resolder of 600 fragile connections at TEH C-side PP1,

recovering 16 out of 18!

Removal of Weiner power supplies and fan trays for refurbishment

Replacement of ~600 individual fans in power supply fan trays (Petr Kubik & Jan Broz – Charles Uni)

SCT Performance Paper Submitted to JINST 1st May 2014

Many thanks to the editors and EdBoard (chaired by Pat and Attilio respectively!) A special thank you to Pat Ward and Taka Kondo.

ATLAS Integration Milestone 3 (May 19th-23rd): • New systems to join: RPC, HLT • Lar, PIX and IBL originally planned for M3 will

now join M4, as will SCT • Cosmic triggers: TRT FastOR, few RPC towers • Consolidate results of M2:

Muons, TRT, BCM (L1CALO back in M4) • Full chain Trigger+ HLT + Offline Storage • Shifts: TRT staying ON all week Monday

Morning till Friday afternoon 24h Shift Further Milestone Runs • 8th September & 13th October ATLAS Cosmic ray run • 24th November for ~2 weeks

SCT Actions in coming weeks

• Complete QA for sufficient LTx for one crate • Finalise mProcessor code for LTx • Replace bad ROD crate, week starting 09.06

– Crate 3 has power supply issues and bad backplane in slot 9 – Full installation of LTx in that crate

• Get SR1 up and running – DCS and evaporative cooling – Complete migrations to SLC6

• Readiness for cooling and powering in July – DAQ & DCS – Cooling loop checks

• Exercise DAQ in P1 – Preparations for M4

Readiness for Run-2

• In general we are in good shape – Key objectives for LS1 are all met, or close to being met

– Final DAQ configuration not yet implemented • Awaiting endcap fibre mapping (finalised about now)

• Awaiting decision on LTx installation schedule

– DCS migrations to linux • Will be tight to implement by time of M4

– All must be implemented by time of ATLAS cosmic ray run

• Key concerns: – Switch on for the first time in 1.5 years

– Manpower to support continuous operation from August

– ROD busy issue • Have we solved it?

Manpower News • SCT IB Chairperson

– Richard Brenner took over Joost Vossebeld from 1st April – Many thanks to Joost for the excellent job over the past 2

years

• SCT offline software coordinator – Pat will stand down from this role in August, replaced by

Nick Barlow • Many thanks to Pat for many years of service in this role. • Nick an excellent choice for replacement, with his technical skills

and wide knowledge of both offline and online

• Run Coordination – I have asked Per to resume run coordination role until mid-

2015 • Per had only two months as RunCo during operations • Currently there is little operations experience at CERN • Hope to identify new candidates for RunCo, and appoint a deputy

from start of 2015 – Call for nominations in last quarter of 2014

Operations Support

• DAQ – Bruce Gallop (core development)

– Carl Gwilliam (SctApi / configuration)

– John Anders (module & global recovery)

– Nick Barlow (Replacement to ROS monitoring)

– Nitesh Soni (set up at Adelaide)

– Dave R (operations at CERN)

– Per (conditions data uploads)

– Vakhtang Tsiskaridze (DSP)

Operations Support (cont’d) • DCS

– Andree Robichaud left SCT a few months ago – Peyton Rose (leaving this summer) – Will Kalderon (leaving this summer) – Chiara Debenedetti – recently started – Alex Madsen (returns this summer) – Koichi Nagai & Katherin Becker (recently appointed by Oxford) – Richard Brenner - iMatrix

• DQ – Big expertise hole now being addressed – Hidetoshi Otono - DQ coordinator

• FSI – Zhijun Liang left to join UCSC (mainly ITK) – Koichi & Katherine to take on local support

• Miscellaneous (qualification tasks) – Jon Hayes working on web configuration editor – Calum MacDonald working on web SCT event dump – Naoki Kimura working on update to web problem tracker

Current ATLAS Agreements (paid by SCT M&O)

• Koichi Nagai (AA expires 30.6.2014) – Critical for SCT operation – Awarded new position by Oxford based at CERN supporting SCT

DCS and FSI • Replacement for Andree Robichaud

• Jacek Pieron (AA expires 30.6.2014) – Countless hardware support tasks, inc heater pad control

system, SCT services etc • Discussed outstanding job list, needs a 2-month extension

– Significant loss of ID expertise

• Sergei Katunin (AA expires 31.12.2014) – Actually funded 50-50 by ID and TRT M&O – Mainly on sonar and TRT gas regulation

Class-3

Class-1 None in 2013 ID shifter from ~August 2014 (3 shifts/day) Class-2 RunCo resumes in July 2014 DAQ/DCS oncall from August 2014 DQ during milestones and cosmics

A BIG THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT FOR SCT DURING

LS1, AND CONTINUING SUPPORT TOWARDS RUN-2

Manpower needs

• Current pool of expertise is not sufficient to support SCT operations

– Need to train more people as ‘expert operators’

– Need to attract more core developers

• Especially DAQ, also DQ – …with the right skillsets

• AA agreements to be terminated this year

– We will lose our resident technical support (Jacek)

• Concern for repairs to hardware
