Ferryhill 2000 Committee & Ferryhill Town Council are inviting residents to attend Ferryhill’s annual Christmas Fayre on Friday 25th November.The Fayre, which is organised by Ferryhill 2000 Committee in partner-ship with Ferryhill Town Council, will commence at 2pm with children’s fair rides, refreshments and a Craft Fayre, which this year will take place indoors at St. Luke’s Parish Centre.A candle-lit procession involving children from the local Primary Schools will leave St. Luke’s Church at 4pm. The procession will be led by Father Christmas in his sleigh and will make its way to the Town Hall gardens where carol singing will take place at 4.15pm. The official switching on of the town’s Christmas lights will then follow at 4.30pm. Any adults and children wishing to take part in the procession are asked to meet at St. Luke’s Church at 3.45pm where candles will be on sale for £1.50.
Santa has also promised to make an appearance again this year and will be visiting the E-Café from 5pm-7pm to meet local children and give out presents in a specially-designed grotto.Tea and coffee will also be on sale in the E-Café as well as the chance to test your luck on the tombola. Later in the evening the event will move to the Manor House where a per-formance by the Ferryhill Town Band will be taking place and also where residents will be able to enjoy a festive glass of mulled wine. There are still stalls up for grabs at this years’ Craft Fayre, so why not take up a stall and put your goods on sale!Stalls are available at a price of £20 with a limited number of charity stalls also being available at a reduced rate of £10. Anyone interested in holding a stall at or for any queriesabout the Fayre, call John or Lauren at Ferryhill Town Hall on 01740 652157.
Christmas FayreBrothers raise record-breaking amount in Great North Run
Three North East guys were proud to have raised over £13,000 for The Cystic Fibrosis Trust when they took part in the Great North Run on Sunday 18th

year-old Steven Williams, along with their friend Phil Atkinson, 30, all finished in a time of around 2 hours and 11 minutes.The remarkable amount raised was boosted by a very generous donation a relative of the two Ferryhill brothers called Chris.The three lads only started training early in the new year, and this was the first Great North Run for all of them.Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is one of the UK’s most common life-threatening inherited diseases, with over 9,000 people in the UK suffering from the condition. The Cystic Fibrosis Trust is the UK’s only national charity dedicated to all aspects of Cystic Fibrosis. Local police are pleased with the outcome of a recent operation, aimed at tackling anti-social behaviour on our streets.The main aims and objectives of Operation Summer Nights were;- To reassure the public that partner members are working together to take action in relation to anti-social behaviour, particularly at this time of year when they often experience an increase.- To promote personal

health and safety and build on the positive behaviour of most young people. Also to encourage those persons to respect others and their property.- To educate, prevent or enforce those messages to people who are behaving or are at risk of behaving anti-socially.Over the past four months Ferryhill Neighbouring Policing Team has actioned the above objectives. From this, youths have been routinely stopped, spoken
to and in some cases alcohol has been seized.Early indications reveal there has been a reduction in alcohol-related anti-social behaviour in the Ferryhill area. Sergeant McTaggart commented, “We will continue to tackle anti social behaviour in a robust manor. “The figures from the past twelve months are very encouraging and we will strive to main this in the future.”
Chilton Town Council was recently pleased to discover that the town has been awarded a silver medal in the Small Town category in this year’s Northumbria in Bloom competition.Congratulations also go to the teachers and pupils at Windlestone School who were awarded a gold certificate in the school’s category.
A spokesperson commented, “The Town Council would like to thank SE Landscaping, Durham County Council, Thinford Nurseries and Chilton Youth Club for their efforts throughout the year. In addition thanks to Hydram Engineering who sponsored a number of the hanging baskets.” If you would be interested in sponsoring a hanging

The Friends of King George V group, in partner-ship with Ferryhill Town Council, is appealing for members of the public who frequently use or have an interest in the King George V Playing Fields, otherwise known as ‘The Broom Rec’, to join the Friends of King George V community group. The group, who endeavour to meet on a regular basis to identify potential im-provements and projects for the playing fields, also ensure that projects are brought to fruition by applying for funding. It is envisaged they will also play a key role in addressing any problems occurring at the playing
fields. Although the Town Council initiated the group it has always been hoped that local residents would play a key role in the group’s activities so that it would become more community led. Unfortunately, despite initial interest from a number of local residents, membership of the group has diminished so much so that the last meeting had to be cancelled.A spokesperson for Ferryhill Town Council said, “We receive numerous enquiries from residents regarding the Broom Rec. By joining the ‘Friends’ group local residents would be presented with the perfect opportunity
to get more involved and have their say on the future development of the playing fields.” Anyone interested in becoming a member of the Friends of King George V group or for further infor-mation about the activities of the group, contact Karen Younghusband at Ferryhill Town Hall on 01740 652157.

Ferryhill Women’s Institute held their Harvest Celebration Evening on Wednesday 7th September, when members brought fruit and vegetables which were displayed on the Harvest Bring & Buy Table.The guest speaker for the evening was Jill, who tugged at the heartstrings of everyone in the hall when she told them about the Bubble Foundation and the work they do at Newcastle Hospital for children who need to be
kept in a sterile environ-ment.The group’s next meeting will be held at Ferryhill Community Centre on Wednesday 5th October when they will be having a fashion show by the Edinburgh Wool Shop.“Some of our members will be modelling the fashions and it should be a great night,” said a spokesperson.The event will take place from 6.30pm. Housing improvement plans to be discussedProposals for improving the quality and management of private sector housing in County Durham will be discussed by councillors next week, and Ferryhill & Chilton are on the agenda.Durham County Council’s Cabinet will be asked to approve a four-year private sector housing strategy, which could see areas of greatest need benefit from council investment of around £23.4m.The strategy sets out five priorities for improving pri-vately-owned and rented housing, which makes up around 80 per cent of the 232,000 homes in County Durham.The five priorities are:• regeneration in eight key areas – Esh Winning, Wheatley Hill, Dawdon, Easington Colliery, Dean Bank, West Chilton, Ferryhill Station and Craghead;• meeting the needs of vulnerable people through home improvements and adaptations;
• improving management practices and housing quality in the privately rented sector;• bringing empty homes back into use; and• making properties more energy efficient.Research suggests that 34 per cent of private sector housing does not meet the decent homes standard. Fuel poverty – which can lead to health problems and an increase in winter deaths – affects around 27 per cent of households in County Durham.Under the proposed strategy work will be con-centrated on areas where housing is in the worst condition and where there are the highest levels of deprivation. A safety net service will also enable urgent work in other areas to be carried out.Action will also be taken to support vulnerable households across County Durham with home im-provements, disabled adaptations and energy
efficiency.Councillor Clive Robson, Cabinet member for housing at Durham County Council, said, “Last year we improved 3,629 properties, we awarded £3.1m in disabled facilities grants to 639 households, we helped 71 residents with financial assistance loans and we prosecuted six private landlords.“Our aim is to improve upon this over the next four years by concentrat-ing our efforts in targeting the worst areas of housing, while ensuring that our services to help vulnerable households are maintained and also ensuring that priority housing issues outside of the regeneration areas are effectively dealt with.”Members of Durham County Council’s Cabinet will be asked to approve the private sector housing strategy for 2011 – 2015 when they meet at County Hall on Thursday 22nd September.

Dear Editor
I am not in the slightest bit surprised with the confirma-tion of a demolition notice on Ferryhill Leisure Centre in the Chapter.
I and others are of the opinion that all of the obstacles Durham County Council have placed on various bids is because of the land value and would conclude that the sale is imminent. By having the demolition notice in place and bulldozers on standby this will ensure the end of the Leisure Centre and some substantial funds to DCC.
This is all within the same week that our Prime Minister and press are all highlighting the obesity problem throughout the UK! Whatever happened to DCC’s aims with healthy lifestyles and wellbeing, they certainly talk a good game but are failing to deliver on this one.
It does not seem DCC have the same appetite to save this valuable facility as our own Community partnership, Town Council and the Slam Company. These have put several bids in over the months only to be shot down by council officers for various reasons to which I believe are related to the sale of land.
The latest setback I am told from Cllr Farry is that all of the County Council Officers (Terry Collins, Paul Derby and Steve Howell) “forgot” to place a diary entry for the next meeting, and from senior officers that is just unbelievable!

If, like me, you are a leisure centre member and use Ferryhill gym, you will have been offered the chance to transfer your membership to another centre and receive 30% discount before 30th September.
Before doing so read the small print, as it states that it is a contract for 12 months. This means that you CAN NOT cancel. You will be able to transfer to another centre but if, like me, you automatically think of transferring back to Ferryhill if it stays open then think again. If it stays open it will not be run by the County Council it will be private and so a new membership will be needed.
Don't be caught out wait until a final decision is made before committing otherwise it could cost you dearly.

Back in February 2010 it was stated in The Chapter that when the new Dalkia plant opened, early 2011, it would supply ‘cheap hot water and energy for the village.’
While I welcomed this claim, I was somewhat dubious, and through The Chapter and a letter to our MP invited a possible explanation from our town councillors, none of which responded. Phil Wilson MP didn’t even acknowledge my letter.
Was this because maybe they knew then that we weren’t going to be getting these perks? I contacted Dalkia at the time with my query and they supplied with with a statement, in which there was no mention of ‘cheap hot water and energy.’ Remember this was February 2010. The plant wasn’t even completed then! So where did this promise come from?
Now we are told we won’t be getting these ‘perks’. I reckon we were all conned.
Apparently Dalkia gave a few pounds to the Christmas Lights Fund. Am I the only one that thinks this was a sweetener to the council to allow this monstrosity to be built?
I understand our Mayor, Mrs Errington, thinks the proposed wind farm will be ‘a blight on Durham County’s countryside’. I wonder what she thinks of the view as she travels along the bypass, overshad-owed by the other blot on the landskape; Dalkia. What a welcome sight for travellers bypassing our ‘town’.

Memorial trees planted in Duncombe Cemetery
A service of dedication took place recently at Duncombe Cemetery.The service, which was to dedicate two slow growing red oak trees that were planted in the Cemetery to commemorate all of the still born babies who have been buried there, was conducted by Reverend Keith Lumsdon of St Luke’s Church.

The trees were donated by Miss Eileen Martin, her sister, Mrs Gwen Grainger, Mrs Grainger’s two daughters Mrs Mackay and Mrs Hindrich and grand-daughter Ysabel Hindrich, all of whom travelled up from York for the service. The family only recently learned that they had a still born baby brother who is buried in unconsecrated
ground in Duncombe Cemetery and felt they would like to do something to remember their brother, and also all of the other still born babies that have been buried in the cemetery over the years.Anyone wishing to purchase a memorial tree in the cemetery should contact Ferryhill Town Council on 01740 652157.
St Michael’s Church in Bishop Middleham is holding its last Rainbow Whist and Domino Drive in the Village Hall from 2pm on Saturday 24th September. Sadly, the regular event is having to
be cancelled due to a lack of organisers and helpers.Admission costs £2, which includes refreshments. There will also be a raffle.All proceeds will be in aid of church funds.

A skip hire boss has been ordered by Newcastle Crown Court to pay back £14,000, after he illegally dumped and burned waste.John Gary Friedlander, from Bowburn, ran two illegal waste sites; one from his home and one on land leased at Mainsforth Terrace, Ferryhill. Neither site was licensed as a
waste facility.The 44 year-old pleaded guilty part-way through his trial, after the court was told how he had made around £175,000 from his criminal activity.Friedlander was ordered to pay back just £14,000, however, as it was found that the only assets remaining were in the equity of his home.

Ferryhill Saints continued their incredible form on Sunday 18th September, winning 5 – 3 against Sedgefield Net Park.The Saints started the game creating a couple of great chances, hitting the bar twice in the first 10 minutes through Jonathon Hair and Stephen Ferguson.They finally broke the deadlock through great work on the right from Jonathon Hair crossing to Daniel Gilliot to fire home from close range.
The Saints continued to dominate the 1st half but were caught with a sucker-punch on the half time whistle when a mix up at the back gave Sedgefield a soft equaliser.After the break Sedgefield started the brighter and were awarded a penalty to make it 2 – 1.Ferryhill Saints grabbed a great equaliser when Daniel Guilliot scored a good header from a Shane Todd cross.Ferryhill were again caught
on the break, when a fantastic 25 yard drive found the top corner to make it 3 – 2 to Sedgefield.The Saints showed great heart in the final 30 minutes. Kruger fired the equaliser from a tremendous finish in the bottom left hand corner after a fine through-ball from Andrew Agar. He finished a fantastic win to make it 5 – 3.Man-of-the-match was Paul Robinson for an all round dominant display.

Celtic FC BeatenFerryhill Celtic FC dropped their first points of the season at home on Sunday 18th September, going down 5 – 3 to a very good Staindrop side.Celtic FC started the game strongly and deservedly took the lead with a good finish into the bottom corner from Liam Taylor.Staindrop upped their game despite being 1 – 0 down and dominated for long periods with Celtic defending, with good per-formances from Neil Bell
and Ben Clarey.Staindrop started the 2nd half strongly and stormed into a 3 – 1 lead with half an hour remaining.Celtic responded well with Dan Mitton composed in midfield and Lukas Linhart always looking a threat going forward.Celtic pulled a goal back to make it 3 -2, but Staindrop soaked up spells of pressure to score a great breakaway goal to make it 4 – 2.Celtic didn't lie down and
came back to make it 4 – 3 through Lukas Linhart.With the home side pushing for the equaliser, Staindrop broke with speed to clinch the game at 5 – 3.Celtic played well, but Staindrop deserved their victory with a well organised performance.Man - of - the - match was Lukas Linhart. The next game will be played on Sunday 25th September, away to Burnmoor in the County Cup.
Ferryhill Town Youth Under 9 Lions got off to a flying start in the League Cup recently, winning 5 – 0 against Greatham FC. Two goals came from Liam Wynn and a hat trick from Lucas Middleton. Man-of-the-match went to Liam Wynn.On Sunday Ferryhill's Under 16s were at home to Barnard Castle. Although Ferryhill played with 10 men all of the game, they only went down
6 – 4 thanks to a hat-trick from Ben Wall and a goal from Nial Longstaff.It was an amazing team performance from Ferryhill, with Ben Wall receiving man-of-the-match. The award, in fact, could have been given to any of the players, as they all played brilliantly on the day. “Well done lads for a fine performance,” said a spokesperson.
