    5. SUMMARY OF ORNITHOLOGICAL EVALUATION AND PROPOSED

    DELIMITATION

The present fieldwork has confirmed the presence of the Cretzchmars Bunting, a

species for which the area fulfilled the IBA criteria in the year 2000. Furthermore, a

pair of Bonellis Eagle was recorded as well as other birds of prey like the Honey

Buzzard, Short-toed Eagle and the more common Buzzard, Sparrowhawk and Rock

Kestrel. Another significant fact is that of the Rock Partridge that can be still found in

the area, and the rich avifauna of the broad-leaved woodland that is adjacent to the

    IBA margins.

The international importance of the studied area is supported by the presence of a

significant breeding population of Cretzschmars Buntings (Emberiza caesia).

Furthermore, the area holds a significant population of Bonellis Eagles (Hieraaetus

fasciatus), Short-toed Eagles (Circaetus gallicus) and Peregrine Falcons (Falco

peregrinus) and it is also an important breeding area for the Honey Buzzard (Pernis

apivorus) and the Rock Partridge (Alectoris graeca).

Map 3 in the CD-ROM (scale 1:100.000) depicts the boundaries of the proposedSpecial Protection Area. The boundaries have been designed so as to include all

critical habitats of selection species during all seasons that they are using the area.

Additionally and in accordance with the specifications for the delimitation of SPAs

(see Dimalexis A., E. Bourdakis and E. Hadjicharalambous 2004) all habitats of

delimitation species have also been included in the porposed SPA.

Specifically the Cretzschamars Bunting was the key species that generally shaped the

proposed boundaries, which include all known localities where it has been observedso far.Additionally habitats of the Bonellis and Short-toed Eagle and the Peregrine

Falcon were also taken into account. Finally foraging and breeding habitats of the

Honey Buzzard and the Rock Partridge were also included in the proposed

    boundaries.

The proposed SPA boundaries are the same with those of the IBA with an exception

    near the settlement of Dafnousa.

The proposed SPA boundaries were drawn on the closest possible precision based on

the available black and white topographic maps using natural landlines and landmarks

(coastline, rivers, crescents) or other landscape characteristics (roads, trails) of thearea (see Dimalexis A., E. Bourdakis and H. Hadjicharalambous 2004). Villages, and

inhabited areas were not included within the boundaries of the SPA, as long as they

didn't form part of any critical habitat for priority species.

The proposed SPA has a diverse ecological character, including both broadleaved and

conifer woodland, maquis scrub and phrygana, steep rocks and small cultivations.
