SERVICE OF THE WORDOur worship follows an order (liturgy) that centers our attention on listening to God’s Word, recounting what he has done for us, and praising his name. This basic order has been the foundation of worship for centuries in the Christian Church.

INVOCATION

C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.

P: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guilt forever. You are his own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to his will.

C: Amen.

THE WORD OF GOD

THE FIRST LESSON Isaiah 40:1-11John the Baptist would preach a message of repentance. Repentance is acknowledging sinfulness and trusting in Christ’s forgiveness. It is not a work to earn forgiveness but rather is an attitude given to us by our loving God.

1 Comfort, comfort my people, says your God.2 Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to herthat her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for, that she has received from the Lord’s hand double for all her sins.3 A voice of one calling:“In the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord;make straight in the desert a highway for our God.4 Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low;the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain.5 And the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all people will see it together. For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”6 A voice says, “Cry out.” And I said, “What shall I cry?”“All people are like grass, and all their faithfulness is like the flowers of the field.7 The grass withers and the flowers fall,

because the breath of the Lord blows on them. Surely the people are grass.8 The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.”9 You who bring good news to Zion, go up on a high mountain. You who bring good news to Jerusalem, lift up your voice with a shout, lift it up, do not be afraid; say to the towns of Judah, “Here is your God!”10 See, the Sovereign Lord comes with power, and he rules with a mighty arm.See, his reward is with him, and his recompense accompanies him.11 He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his armsand carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young.

VERSE OF THE DAY Luke 3:4,6P: Alleluia. Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.

Alleluia.C: Alleluia. All mankind will see God’s salvation. Alleluia.

You showed favor to your land, O LORD;

You restored the fortunes of Jacob.

You forgave the iniquity of your peopleAnd covered all their sins.

I will listen to what God the LORD will say;He promises peace to his people, his saints.

Surely his salvation is near those who fear him,That his glory may dwell in our land.

Love and faithfulness meet together;Righteousness and peace kiss each other.

Glory be to the Father and to the SonAnd to the Holy Spirit,As it was in the beginning, Is now, and will be forever. Amen. Refrain

THE GOSPEL LESSON Mark 1:1-8John the Baptist was the messenger prophesied by Isaiah. He prepared the way for the Messiah with a baptism of repentance.

1The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God, 2 as it is written in Isaiah the prophet:“I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way”—3 “a voice of one calling in the wilderness,‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’”4 And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. 6 John wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7 And this was his message: “After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. 8 I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

he promises peace to his people, his faithful servants— but let them not turn to folly.9 Surely his salvation is near those who fear him, that his glory may dwell in our land.10 Love and faithfulness meet together; righteousness and peace kiss each other.11 Faithfulness springs forth from the earth, and righteousness looks down from heaven.12 The Lord will indeed give what is good, and our land will yield its harvest.13 Righteousness goes before him and prepares the way for his steps.

CLOSING HYMN Comfort, Comfort All My People | 11The Season of Advent

Advent is a Latin word that means “coming.” The season of Advent has been observed by Christians in the four-week period before Christmas since at least the 5 th Century. Originally certain days were set aside for fasting to remember Christ’s coming and to look forward to his coming again. During Advent there is a deep sense of urgency as we consider the threefold emphasis of:

1) The “coming” of our Lord in the flesh at Christmas

2) The continual “coming” of the Lord in his Word

9

Page 11: -SoW-…  · Web viewAdvent is a Latin word that means “coming.” The season of Advent has been observed by Christians in the four-week period before Christmas since at

3) The second “coming” of Jesus at the end of time

Many churches use blue as the liturgical color of Advent. Blue is the color of heaven, and symbolizes hope and anticipation. An alternate color for Advent is purple. Purple is the color of royalty, since in ancient times purple was the most expensive dye to produce. It is an appropriate color for Advent since we remember our coming King. Purple also reminds us of repentance, a theme that runs throughout Advent as we prepare for Jesus coming.

ADVENT WREATHThe Advent Wreath is a combination of two very common symbols: light and the fir tree. From the early centuries of Christianity, it has been the practice to represent Christ by a burning candle. The fir tree has a long history of religious use. No doubt the Advent Wreath was suggested by the Christmas tree.

It seems that the Advent Wreath originated a few hundred years ago among the Lutherans of eastern Germany. A wreath of evergreens, made in various sizes, was either suspended from the ceiling or placed on a table. Four candles representing the four Sundays of Advent were fastened to the wreath.

Eventually the use of the Advent Wreath became wide spread and moved also from the home into the church. The general symbolism of the Advent Wreath lies in the growing light of the wreath, increasing each week as we approach the birthday of Jesus, the Light of the world.
