Good afternoon and welcome to the Harry Williams River-side Stadium for this Preliminary Round game in the FACup (sponsored by Budweiser) and we offer a welcome tothe officials, players and supporters of A.F.C.Liverpool. Wehope you have an enjoyable afternoon with us and wishyou a safe journey home later this evening.

It is always a real pleasure to play in the world's most fa-mous cup competition and while hopes of a May day atWembley are something of a non-existant pipedream, there is always something special about being here andplaying in it. There are financial benefits of winning too, which is always a plus side too!

Well, we really are in a rather strange position at the mo-ment! Played 4, Lost 4, certainly not something we wereexpecting. Time to panic? Good grief, no!! It's still August........

Today, we step away from the league campaign and, al-though it will be far from easy against an AFC Liverpoolside who are going well in the NWCFL (with 5 wins in 7games) and beat us the last time we met at Prescot a cou-ple of seasons ago, its a chance to get a win under ourbelts and kick-start our season. We have shown in the re-cent matches that we can get out of this relative slump solet's get behind the lads as we always do.

So, enjoy the game everyone. I amin the north of England but in

Durham for today's T20 Internation-als between the men and women ofEngland and Australia. But I will beup again next week ..... really lookingforward to it as always. I need agood shout of C'MON RAMMY!!!!!!!

We welcome A.F.C.Liverpool to the HWRStoday for our FA Cup game and there is al-ways a special feel to being a part of thegreatest cup competition in the world andtoday is no different. We are all really looking forward to whatwill hopefully be the start of a memorablecup run, although we know A.F.C.Liverpoolare in a good run of form and we are ex-pecting a really tough game.As for ourselves - well, it doesn't need totell you that we are all extremely disap-pointed with our start to the league cam-paign. There are no excuses from our sideof things, we simply haven't been goodenough and, believe me when I tell you, weare all working as hard as possible to putthings right. What we won't be doing ispressing any panic buttons. We are 100%together in this and everyone from Jonnoand Bern to myself, Daz, Katie and all of theplayers are doing everything possible tokick start our season.Maybe our early season form is still ahangover from what can only be describedas the heartbreak we all suffered on thelast day of last season at Skelmersdale. Wehave need from each and every one of youwho have supported us through the fan-tastic times is really to get behind the ladstoday and together, as a club, we willachieve our goals.Thank you for your continued support andenjoy the game today. COYR Glenn.

return of therammy rebels

The nightmare start to the seasoncontinued at the sun-baked HarryWilliams Stadium, as the east Lancashireneighbours deservedly returned homewith all three points. In front of another crowd of over 300,

including one intrepid traveller who hadjourneyed over from Sweden, the Ramstook the field still looking for their firstpoints of the season. However, they were undone by an old

boy who returned to haunt them andleave them still pointless. It took Keiron Pickup just eleven min-

utes to rub his old colleagues’ noses init. Grant Spencer upended Tom Bradleyin the area, and Ben Allen stepped up totake the spot-kick. Grant Shenton in thehome goal made a fine save, but Pickup

beat the Rams defence to the loose balland gleefully hammered it home fromclose range.Yet before that, Mark Drew could well

have given the home side the lead.On three minutes he sent in a thun-

derous drive which Sean Davis did wellto turn round the Padiham post, beforetrying his luck again just minutes laterwith a fine volley from the edge of thebox which just sailed wide.Soon after the goal, Spencer sent over

a tantalising low cross which evaded thelunging boot of Lee Gaskell by inches, and Jon Robinson was unlucky to see hisclose range turn and shot turned awayfor a corner.

The visitors doubled their lead on 30minutes in the simplest of fashions.

Another Rammy old boy, Mark Sharplesspotted the overlapping Lewis Jordan downthe right wing, and his low cross was metperfectly by Pickup as he raced betweentwo defenders to prod the ball home fromclose range.Gaskell was again inches away, this time

from a Joel Pilkington cross, as the Ramstried to reduce the arrears, but for all theirpossession, they posed little threat to theStorks goal.

A couple of half-time substitutionsseemed to rally the home side for the sec-ond half, although they so nearly slippedfurther behind when a great cross from MaxJones found the head of Allen, but the Padi-ham centre-forward could only watch as hiseffort went over the bar.

A free-kick from drew was brilliantlysaved by Davis as he pushed it away for acorner, then Robinson chanced his armfrom 25 yards, but the ball flew over the bar.

Yet another Drew free-kick found AndyDawson at the far post but he could onlyturn the ball wide of the post, before thehome side’s chances diminished on 59 min-utes when substitute Phil Edghill received ared card for an over the top challenge. That turned the game back in Padiham’s

favour, as they missed a host of chances toput the game to bed.

Pickup was inches away from claiming thematch ball, whilst Sharples headed overfrom close range when he ought to havedone better.Pickup, a constant thorn in the side of his

old team, cut inside but then fired over, be-fore the miss of the match again saw theRams old boys involved. Pickup with acresof space on the left, threaded the ballthrough to Sharples who flicked it sidewaysto the on-rushing Allen. His shot clippedthe top of the bar when a goal looked in-evitable.At the other end, a Robinson header was

tipped over by Davis, before Gaskell firedwell wide from 25 yards.Shenton had to be alert to prevent a third

goal when fierce drive from the right byDean Overson was touched over.

Padiham’s profligacy almost came backto haunt them, as with just two minutes ofnormal time remaining, the home side fi-nally got a foothold in the match.A looping ball into the box found player-

manager Anthony Johnson near the farpost, and as he nodded the ball back, TomBrooks bundled it home to give his sidesome hope.

But despite a further six minutes, theRams never looked like sneaking a pointthey would have barely deserved.

OOTBALL

Welcome to the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium this afternoonfor an early adventure into the world of knock-out competitions. The FA Cup is, of course, the greatest of these, and so it’s always

a pleasure to compete for this famous cup.Mind you, clubs at our level are never going to get anywhere

near the final, but in our case, it’s simply a case of “being a part ofit”.Financially, these games are often a life-line for many non-league

clubs, and the £1925 on offer for today’s winners will prove a de-cent enough incentive.Ideally, clubs should never budget for any sort of cup run, be it

the FA Cup, Trophy or Vase, but sadly many do. To lose out at anearly stage invariably causes financial problems for those sillyenough to assume a cup run is bound to be forthcoming. Any sortof success should always be regarded as a bonus, so I am sure AFCLiverpool as well as ourselves will be hoping for a decent run, andwho knows, a possible real money-spinner should one of us man-age to progress through to the First round proper. It’s not impos-sible, as I well remember our neighbours Radcliffe Borough doingso not that long ago.

So welcome to everyone who has made the journey over fromMerseyside this afternoon. After a couple of disappointing seasons, the Reds look to be fly-

ing this time round, so today’s game could well prove to be a verycompetitive game.Should it be needed, the replay will be at Prescot Cables ground

this coming Tuesday, 3rd September, with a 7.45pm kick-off.RADIOWe are all too aware of the ridiculous amount of air time devoted

to the top level of football in this country. However, those of us who prefer the non-league game, really do

struggle to listen to news and comments on our take on football. The wonderful “Non-League Hour” on Radio Lancashire hasbeen banished to the vaults of history as a result of the BBC’sdisgraceful decision to turn local radio into a national station

from 7pm each weekday evening, although Radio Manchesterstill manages to over-ride this instruction most Friday nights, and includes a non-league section. On the same evening onTameside Radio, Pav has an hour long programme featuringteams from east Manchester and Tameside, many of whom arerelevant to us here at Ramsbottom.

Five Live has a nationwide show, although this half-hour isbroadcast at 5.30am on a Sunday morning! It can, however, be

picked up via the internet at any point during the week.If you search Google, you will find a few others dotted round the

country, so if you are a non-league fanatic, like myself, you maywell have to search, but it is possible to find sufficient non-

league broadcasts throughout the week.Sadly, as opposed to the Premier League which is con-

stantly forced down our throats, a little bit of work is neededto finally contact these various programmes. But it’s worth

the effort!Enjoy your non-league football!

AFC Liverpool was formed in 2008, by Liver-pool FC fans, who had becoming increasinglyfrustrated at the cost and difficulty in obtain-ing tickets for the Premiership. The supposed‘39th game’ in which Premier League fixtureswould be played in different parts of theworld proved to be the final straw, highlight-ing that top flight football is now more con-cerned about money than its fans.A website was created and, with the responsebeing positive, work began to move to thenext stage and create a steering group tomake the club a reality. At the beginning of March 2008 AFC Liver-pool was officially formed and it was madeclear that the club was not in any way a re-sponse to the ownership issue at Anfield or aprotest against Liverpool Football Club, morea reaction to issues at the top end of footballin general.

By May, AFC Liverpool had appointed its firstmanager in Derek Goulding. The followingmonth the club arranged a groundshare withPrescot Cables and had been accepted intothe North West Counties Football League. The club’s first game was a 1-1 draw in afriendly with St Helens Town on 16th July2008 and they began their inaugural leagueseason extremely well, beating Darwen 5-0 intheir first competitive game and going on arun of ten wins in the first eleven games. However they failed to keep this momentumgoing, and the club eventually finished fourthin the league. The season did prove fruitfulthough as a victory in the final of the First Di-vision Trophy over Padiham at Ashton Ath-letic provided the club’s first piece ofsilverware.2009/10 began with three successive victoriesbut after this the season became very indif-

ferent. After a 5-2 home defeat toAtherton Collieries on Easter Monday,Derek Goulding left the club and ex as-sistant and goalkeeping coach PaulMoore was appointed caretaker Man-ager.Under Moore’s stewardship AFC had astrong end to the 2009/10 campaign, winning five out of their last sevenleague games to climb to fifth in theleague and also retaining the First Di-vision Trophy, coming from behind tobeat Cheadle Town 2-1 in the final atFlixton. In doing so, AFC Liverpool be-came the first club not only to win theTrophy twice but also successfully de-fend it.2010/11 also began in promising fash-ion with the Reds going on a ten gameunbeaten run after an opening day lossat AFC Darwen. However despiteamassing their highest ever points totalpromotion never looked probable dueto the form of would be ChampionsAFC Blackpool and second placed Run-corn Town, resulting in a fourth placedfinish, missing out on third by goal dif-ference.There was disappointment too in theFirst Division Trophy when theyreached the final for a third consecutivetime only to lose to Atherton Collieries3-2 in extra time. In the FA Vase, steadyprogress was made to the third round, where their dreams of Wembley weredashed by a defeat at Whitley Bay, whowould go on to claim a third successivetriumph. However at the League AGM in July2011 there was a surprise whenRossendale were expelled from the

league and Formby were demoted tothe First Division. Holker Old Boys, whofinished third on goal difference, de-clined an invitation to take up a placein the Premier Division, meaning thatAFC Liverpool were invited to take theplace and the club accepted the chancethat was offered to them. The 2011/12 season started badly interms of results but not performancesfor AFC Liverpool as they had to waituntil November for their first Leaguevictory, which came about in the formof a 7-0 demolition of Winsford United. From that point, AFC Liverpool, whohad been rooted to the foot of thetable, began the steady climb out ofdanger, ultimately finishing in nine-teenth place, sixteen points clear of therelegation places.Last season saw AFC Liverpool consol-idate their position in the North WestCounties Premier Division with aneleventh placed finish, accumulatingsixty points in the process. As the sea-son progressed, manager Paul Moorebuilt a core squad of players, whichplayed some of the most exciting, at-tractive football in the league and postChristmas, won fifteen and drew five oftwenty eight games, including a defeatof eventual Premier Division championsPadiham on their home patch. The performances were rewarded inthe final game of the season as theReds beat recently crowned championsof the Evo-Stik NPL First Division North,Skelmersdale United, 3-0 in the Liver-pool Senior Cup semi final to book anall North West Counties clash with Boo-tle in the final.

this timelast season

Ramsbottom United progressed tothe next round of the FA Cup with acomfortable victory over a disap-pointing Brigg Town outfit.

On a wet and miserable after-noon, another 200+ crowd weresoon cheering the home side asthey took the lead as early as the6th minute. A foul on Phil Dean onthe left saw Gary Stopforth strokethe free-kick round the wall and inoff the near post.

Minutes later, another Stopforthfree-kick from the left evaded thevisiting defence and Mark Ayreswas inches away from converting atthe far post.

Dean fired in from 20 yards butFenty in the Brigg goal easily de-fused the shot, whilst momentslater Dean was again set up, this

time by Lee Gaskell, but his closerange effort was deflected for a cor-ner.On 32 minutes the home side ex-

tended the lead. Stopforth, whohad an excellent game, fired in acorner and Ayres rose highest tothump his header home.Four minutes later and the Rams

nearly added to the lead. A fiercecross-cum-shot was parried byFenty and Jordan Hulme reactedquickest but his header looped overthe bar.

Moments later Hulme shouldhave scored as he burst into thebox, but Fenty dived bravely at hisfeet to deny the chance, and a thirdopportunity in quick succession ar-rived for the home No.10 as hegathered a half-cleared corner only

to see his acute lob go wide ofthe far post.

Gaskell had another effortfrom 20 yards out that sailedwide as a one-sided half drew toa close.

The second half saw a rareforay into the Rams half by thevisitors as Grant Shenton, on anunder-worked afternoon, had tobe alert to gather a drive fromArcher.

However, on 49 minutes thehome side put the game well outof reach of Brigg.A fine through ball found Do-

minic Smalley on the right, andhe cut in before crossing forHulme to net with ease despite acouple of defenders attemptingto clear their lines.

It was one way traffic fromthen on, and the only surprisewas a lack of further goals.

Danny Warrender’s excellentright-wing cross was inchesaway from the on-rushing Dean,Gaskell saw his turn and shotmiss the target by inches, whilst

Stopforth saw another free-kickfly just over the bar.Hulme was inches away with a

close-range volley, beforeMatthews created two chancesat the other end, the first ofwhich Shenton dealt with well atthe foot of the post.

Another Smalley cross sawHulme head wide, before, on 69minutes, Dean was upended inthe box.Gaskell took the spot-kick but

grazed the outside of the post, atrick he repeated from open playjust seconds later. Gaskell re-alised it was not going to be hisday when he finally poked theball home only to see the ref-eree’s assistant raise his flag foroffside.

Hulme and Dean came closeto adding to the tally as the min-utes ticked down, but in reality, this was a game the Rams won ata canter.A visit to AFC Fylde in the next

round is sure to prove more test-ing.

I fear that my first notes for the programme will be read undersomething of a cloud of doom and gloom that appears to havedescended over the stadium, and created, I suspect, by an un-derstandable air of expectation from what happened last season.Like others (including the players), I read the comments on theforum, and some were clearly looking forward to this season, sowas I, in the hope that the team would carry on from where theyleft off only a matter of a couple of months ago, but we all knowthat football isn't always like that, and we also know that goodteams don't become bad ones overnight. No one, especially the team management and players, need re-minding that performances haven't been what was expected, ei-ther by you or themselves. I thought the performance againstWarrington Town was a sign of things to come, and we certainlydeserved at the very least a point from the game.Unfortunately 48 hours later we got what we deserved againstPadiham, and I dare anyone to say differently. It is on record that one of my former clubs was Curzon Ashtonwho, until last season, were involved in the play-offs every seasonsince their promotion to the Northern Premier League. On thisbasis alone someone thought the manager, in charge for just 12months, should be sacked because the club had gone backwards! As someone with more than a little knowledge of the gamewould say: " Football, bl**dy h**l!"Having said that what is needed is for everyone to get behindthe lads. They need to relax and play their football in the way youknow they can, not be tense and afraid of making a mistake forfear of criticism either during the game or on a public forum, andtoday they have the chance to put aside their league worries aswelcome AFC Liverpool in The FA Cup. A trip to the White RoseCounty awaits the victors. Our visitors will no doubt be regarded as the underdogs, for noreason other than they play at a lower level. That is 'scientific'way some people make a judgement: if it was only that easy!I'll be giving 100% support again today, and I hope that you willtoo.(Sir Alex Ferguson: Sometimes in football you have to hold yourhands up and say, yeah, they're better than us!)

What a fantastic turnout we’ve had for our first two home gamesthis season! 254 for the opener against Curzon Ashton, and then309 for the match against Padiham. Although we lost both games, which is something that’s quite a new experience to us Rammy fans,I think it’s important that we gave a very good account of ourselvesto those who came down to last week’s game (the less said aboutthe Curzon Ashton game the better!) Over the last few weeks we’ve delivered about 7000 fixtures flyersthrough every letterbox we can find within half a mile of the River-side. We’ve still got a few to go, notably Peel Brow, the Nuttall LaneEstate, and a few up round Holcombe Book, but it’s been a mam-moth task and I’m really pleased that we managed it. I’d like tohope that a few of today’s supporters, as well as a good number ofthose at the last two matches, are here as a result of this campaign.Given the number of new faces we’ve seen at the ground (a goodnumber of women, I noticed), I reckon that flyers is probably themost effective way of telling people we exist, and of persuadingfolks to come to our matches. We just don’t read the newspaperslike we used to - and as Tony said in his column, the media focusesexclusively on the top flight of football, forgetting that the rest ofus exist.I’ve been really proud to be a Rammy fan over the last couple ofweeks. It’s easy to support a team that’s running away with theNorthwest Counties League title, or is up there challenging for pro-motion in the Evostik, but it’s another thing entirely to give suchstrong encouragement when our team is on a horrible losingstreak. I think we all know that our players have given 100% overthe last few matches, and absolutely don’t deserve to be on thewrong end of every result. We’re better than those scorelines, andour players are amongst the best in the league. How can it be thatRobbo and Gaskell haven’t yet found the net when they were Eng-lish football’s highest strike duo last season? Along with TomBrookes, who is going to be one of the most prolific goalscorersthis season, we have a fantastic attack. We’ve undoubtedly missedGary Stopforth and Phil Edghill in the middle, and the loss of MarkAyres at the back has been pivotal, but these are problems that thelads will rise above. What matters is that we keep our heads up,that we keep the support positive, and that we are patient.

Today’s game is another potential banana skin. If we win thenin the back of our minds is the thought that Liverpool are aNorthwest Counties team. If we lose then the effect on ourconfidence could be dire. The only way we can really gainmuch from today’s game would be to put six past em - andI’m pretty sure that’s not going to happen. And we still haveNorthwich and Darlington to come. God help us! Patient andpositive is what we need though as supporters - it’s going to

come together soon. Keep up the good work on the terraces, and let’s hope for better times to come!
