From the Pastor

[The Canaanite woman] said, "Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters." Then Jesus said to her in reply, "O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish." And the woman's daughter was healed from that hour. Mt 15: 27-28 Sometimes it is a challenge to figure out Jesus' words and the meaning of some of his ac-tion. In today's gospel we have a pagan woman approach Jesus and ask for a miracle. Her daughter is possessed and tormented by a demon and so she comes to Jesus asking for deliverance for her little girl. At first, Jesus seemingly ignores her, then he tells her that it is not right to take the food of the children (the Israelites) and throw it to the dogs (pejorative word many of the Jews used to describe pagan gentiles). And yet, she is re-lentless in her prayer to Jesus, "Even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters!" Why does Jesus seem so aloof and even harsh? The answer lies in his next words. "O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish." All of this was aimed at eliciting a true act of faith on the Canaanite woman's behalf. Remember that the Ca-naanites were pagans. They believed in a whole slew of deities, some of whom they even offered their own children to in sacrifice. They had no faith in the One, True God and we all know that the Lord, because he respects and holds dear our freedom to believe or not to believe, always requires faith on behalf of the individual before he will act in his or her life. In his home town he could work few miracles because of their lack of faith, Peter sinks in water because of his lack of faith, and so on. But with faith, Jesus raises the dead, casts out demons, heals the sick, the blind, lepers, and the lame. Technically speaking, faith is the intellectual assent to some divine truth. That is, we use our brains acknowledge and believe in something that God has revealed to us. The stronger and deeper our intellectual assent, our choice to believe in what God has re-vealed (remember that faith is choice, not a feeling), the deeper out connection is to the awesome love and power of the Most High God. Today we approach the altar of God with a faith renewed that he is really and truly present in the Eucharistic Bread and Wine. With this firmness of faith there is nothing that God cannot do in our lives.
