105 Verses in the Critical Greek Text of the New Testament Without Any Manuscript Support These notes were sent to me by Dr. Maurice Robinson and detail 105 places in the Critical Greek Text of the New Testament where the complete verse reading is not to be found in any Greek manuscript. This is the result of the reasoned eclectic approach to textual criticism where readings have been cobbled together from multiple sources resulting in 105 instances where no single manuscript has the same reading. Please note, I have provided these notes without making any alterations. The first part lists the verses divided into segments. The second lists the manuscripts that contain each segment detailed in the first list. This evidence reveals that what we have in the current, popular Critical Text of the Greek New Testament is a text that, in many places, has never existed until modern times. It is my persuasion that what Dr. Robinson has provided in his paper “New Testament Textual Criticism: The Case for Byzantine Priority” (http://rosetta.reltech.org/TC/v06/Robinson2001.html) presents a more reasonable approach to textual criticism. As a pastor, I also commend his approach as being more compatible with an orthodox view of the doctrine of the text of Scripture. I provide these notes in the hope they provoke the reader to further study on this most important subject. FULL TEXT OF THE 105 VERSES LACKING

OVERALL GREEK MANUSCRIPT SUPPORT IN NA27

(37 Verses containing bracketed text marked with an asterisk)

(68 verses with no brackets left unmarked) These data do not include the text-critical symbols used in NA27 to indicate addition, omission, transposition, and substitution, whether of single words or multiple-word phrases. Instead, prefixed English letters within parentheses indicate (at least) the initial word beginning a variant reading. In most cases, the whole word or words affected are also underlined. When two or more variant units overlap (such as when lengthy variant units also contain separate and exclusive variant units), only the initial word of the longer variant unit will be underlined. For details regarding the nature of each variant unit, the NA27 apparatus must be consulted. DATABASE: THE APPROXIMATELY 105 NA27 VERSES LACKING OVERALL GREEK MANUSCRIPT SUPPORT

An asterisk preceding the verse number indicates that this variant unit is presented over two separate pages in NA27. An asterisk following the variant designations (a), (b), etc. identifies at least one combination of variant units that mutually negate each other, thus leaving the NA27 main text with zero support. Txt indicates a specific statement regarding the support for the NA27 text reading (the positive apparatus); Var indicates the support for a stated variant within the NA27 apparatus where txt is not otherwise stated (the negative apparatus). Verse references followed by “f”, “ff”, or “fff” indicate that the series of variant units presented in NA27 involves more than one verse; the portion remains treated as a single entity, following NA27 in this regard. MSS cited in parentheses ( ) in the NA27 apparatus are excluded from computation, since they differ in some manner from the NA27 main text as printed. A slash / separates multiple reading support within a single variant unit line. Where UBS4 cites a variant unit, its rating – {A} {B} {C} or {D} – appears at the end of the line presenting evidence for that variant unit. The list provided makes no claim to be exhaustive. Other whole verses may exist in NA27 that lack support from any existing manuscript, yet cannot be identified. This is in part because many verses lack a variant having the minimal “txt” designation to permit calculation of support, and in part because the NA27 variants cited in a given verse may result in zero support if other variant units (such as those in SQE) could have been considered. 5 It should be noted that variant units (a) and (b) are not only mutually exclusive, but when combined present a most peculiar situation within modern eclectic praxis: the majority of MSS are claimed to be correct in their wording of the 9-word opening portion of the verse, in contrast with the four leading varying alternate readings of Í L (1241) aur c vg / Ì75 B / Ì45 (f1) / D (33 892); yet every member of that same “correct” majority as well as some of the varying witnesses from the first portion unitedly err in regard to the 7-word inclusion that immediately follows in those same MSS, leaving only 4 MSS that immediately preceding were judged to be wrong suddenly becoming the bearers of true witness.

Variant units (a), (b), (c), and (d) pertain to verse 17; variant units (e), (f), and (g) pertain to verse 18; variant unit (h) pertains to verse 19; and variant unit (i) pertains to verse 20. Taken individually, verse 17 is supported by Í2 B C f1 f13 1241 pc lat; verse 18 by Í and possibly 892); verse 19 by all witnesses except D it syc ; and verse 20 by Ì75 Í B L 579 pc r1. 7 The two verses Luke 22:43-44 are treated as a single unit in NA27, but are double-bracketed, thus indicating the editors’ view that this passage is not original to Luke. One might thus assume that this entire verse should not be considered, since the editors reject its originality. However, it is significant that this verse demonstrates – even where a lengthy passage is otherwise rejected – that the remaining editorial choices still establish an “original” form of the text of that verse (with or without the presumed interpolation) that appears in no extant manuscript! Variant unit (a) relates only to the inclusion or omission of the bracketed passage, and is not involved in the determination of zero support. Otherwise, variant unit (b) relates to verse 43, and for that verse shows the support of all inclusion MSS except D Q Θ Ψ pc; variant units (c) and (d) pertain to verse 44, which by itself is supported only by MS Ψ.

8 As shown in the Variae lectiones minores (p. 734), B* omits λεγω (or λαλω or λελαληκα), and thus does not support the NA27 main text reading, even though it appears that the exemplar of B likely read λεγω or λαλω, with a resultant omission by homoioteleuton. Since the leading Alexandrian MSS are divided (Ì66 A 33 for λαλω versus Ì75 L N for λεγω), NA27 appears too speculative when citing B(*) solely in favor of λεγω. 9 D and Ψ differ from the main text of NA27 by reading εαν instead of αν. 10 Although this verse lacks overall Greek MS support, it does retain minimal versional support from e q vgmss sys, p samss pbo bo. 11 The conjecture is excluded from calculation of zero support.

15 Both verses 1Co 15:54-55 are treated as one unit in NA27. Variant unit (a) pertains to verse 54, while variant unit (c) pertains to verse 55. Variant unit (b) relates to the variant spelling of the same main text word (νικος) that appears in both verses. 16 In this and the following variant unit, all witnesses supporting the variant read νεικος, suggested in NA27 as “ex itac.”; however, the legitimate alternate word (νεικος = “strife”) is equally possible.

17 The ECM main text changes the NA27 variant reading (c) to the alternate supported by B 945 1241 1243 1739 pc ff sa, thus leaving its version of this whole verse supported by B. This does not alter the situation encountered when using NA27/UBS4, however, since nearly all students and most non-text-critical specialists would be unlikely to consult ECM in the course of their reference to the New Testament Greek text.. 18 Note that the constant witnesses of the second order 614 630 1505, although included within Ï in variant unit (d), are negated in variant unit (c).

This likewise does not alter the situation when students and non-specialists use NA27/UBS4. 20 Variant unit (a) and variant unit (b) are treated within a single variant unit in UBS4. ============================= Addendum 1: the Pericope Adulterae (Jn 7:53-8:11) appears in double brackets and is not considered by the NA27/UBS4 editors as part of the Fourth Gospel; therefore its readings are not included in the above tabulation. However, even the “secondary” PA text as printed in NA27 contains two verses which also have zero support; these are supplied below: John 8:7 (a)* var: D pc (b) var: K Γ 579 pm / U Λ f13 700 1424mg al (c) var: K 579 pm / M (d)* txt: D (f1) pc e John 8:9 (a) var: 1 892 pc vg bomss / D Λ f13 pc (b)* txt: U Γ 700 (892) pm (c) var: U Λ f13 700 1424mg pm / D pc

(d)* txt: D 1 892 pc c vgst (e) var: 1 892 al lat / e Addendum 2: MS 1241 as a consistently cited witness of the second order is included within Ï in the fourth variant unit (d) within this verse. This is verified by UBS4 and by comparison of the MS itself (on microfilm). Thus, from the NA27 apparatus this verse cannot be considered to have zero-support. However, by collation one can establish that MS 1241 does differ from the NA27 main text by reading the Byzantine και εγω in place of the Alexandrian καγω, thus still leaving the verse as printed in NA27 with zero support, albeit only in regard to one orthographic variant. The remaining txt support for the καγω/και εγω interchange is given as variant unit (@), taken from the apparatus of SQE, even though SQE does not cite MS 1241 as a consistent witness. John 17:11 και ουκετι ειµι εν τω κοσµω και (a) αυτοι εν τω κοσµω εισιν (@)€καγω προς σε (b) ερχοµαι πατερ αγιε τηρησον αυτους εν τω ονοµατι (c) σου (d) ω δεδωκας µοι (e) ινα ωσιν εν (f) καθως ηµεις 17:11 (a)* txt: A B 1241 pc d f (@) txt: Ì66vid A B C* D L Ψ 1 33vid 1006 1582 pc (b) var: D (a c) r1 (c) var: D / D1 (d)* txt: Ì60 A B C Θ Ψ f13 1 Ï UBS4 = {B} (e) var: Ì66* it ac2 (f)* var: B Θ 579 700 L-844 al aur f vg syh ( Ì66c incert.) Addendum 3: In John 16:18, L-844 as a consistently cited witness of the second order apparently is included in Ï in the txt reading of the third variant unit (c) within this verse. This verse in NA27 thus appears to have sole support from L-844 – yet that supporting manuscript is not cited at all within UBS4 or SQE!
