They sometimes can’t see that they may have contributed to a dispute or said something that may have upset a teacher. It’s the parent’s job to help kids process what happened so that they understand their role in a situation. Ask good questions to help the full story emerge. 3. Assess whether to go to school or not. Kids, like adults, benefit from telling their story to a trusted source. Problems can often be dealt with by talking through an issue, and giving kids some coping tips. If your child has a problem that they can’t solve themselves, or you think adult intervention may be needed, please consider the following: Going through the right channels. Approach the school calmly, going through the school office, or directly to your child’s teacher. 4. Looking for solutions rather than blame. Keep the discussion focused on what’s best for your child. Listen to your teacher’s viewpoint and value their perspective. 5. Staying in touch. Be realistic and remember that some problems can’t be solved to your satisfaction and won’t be resolved straight away. Be prepared to work with your child’s teacher for the long-term. Parenting is easy when things are going well, but testing when children experience difficulty. Principal’s Reflection

12 September, 2018

Week 8, Term 3

Reflection Dear Families,

Catholic Education Week is currently being celebrated across all eighteen Catholic schools in the Northern

Territory. It is an opportunity for all Catholic schools to celebrate and promote their distinctive mission and

ethos. Yesterday our Yr. 6 students, along with primary and secondary students

from other Catholic schools attended a concert and mass by Fr. Rob Galea at the

Marrara Sports Stadium. He was very inspiring and created a terrific uplifting event

for our youth.

This Friday the Catholic Primary School Public Speaking Competition will be

held at Holy Family. Over the last weeks our year 6 students have been competing

to represent Holy Spirit at the event. I am proud to announce that representing the

Yr. 6 students will be Chelsea Biddlecombe speaking on the topic “Should fireworks be banned in the Northern Territory?” I wish Chelsea and our Yr.6

students all the best on the day.

Every parent wants the best for their children, especially at school. Schools are generally safe places, staffed by teachers who have the best

interests of the students at heart. However, things do go wrong from time to time. Difficulties with learning, conflict and peer rejection can

be a part of school life for some children, particularly at this time of the year as we enter into the ‘build up’.

If your child has a problem at school, it is really important that you communicate your concerns with your child’s teacher, myself or a

member of the leadership team as soon as possible. Dealing with the problem promptly and in a positive way makes a huge difference to

your child’s resilience, self-esteem and future relationships with teachers and peers. Older children often express concerns that they will

be teased if parents speak with the teacher. They prefer that parents don’t speak with anyone at all. It has been my experience both

personally and professionally that when the matter is not addressed, things don’t improve; in fact they often get worse. Please be assured

that staff at Holy Spirit will always deal with your concerns confidentially and sensitively to ensure problems are resolved.

Our goal is to work in partnership with families to ensure the best possible outcomes for all students.

Michael Grose provides some excellent suggestions for parents in helping children take responsibility for their problems without excuses.

1. Stay calm and rational. It’s natural as a parent to protect or defend your children, particularly when you think that they’ve been

treated unfairly. But it is best not to act when you are full of emotion. Take your time to think about how you can help your child.

2. Get all the facts. Kids are faulty observers and often only see one side of a story. They sometimes can’t see that they may have

contributed to a dispute or said something that may have upset a teacher. It’s the parent’s job to help kids process what happened so

that they understand their role in a situation. Ask good questions to help the full story emerge.

3. Assess whether to go to school or not. Kids, like adults, benefit from telling their story to a trusted source. Problems can often be dealt with by talking through an issue, and giving kids some coping tips. If your child has a problem that they can’t solve themselves,

or you think adult intervention may be needed, please consider the following:

Going through the right channels. Approach the school calmly, going through the school office, or directly to your child’s teacher.

4. Looking for solutions rather than blame. Keep the discussion focused on what’s best for your child. Listen to your teacher’s

viewpoint and value their perspective.

5. Staying in touch. Be realistic and remember that some problems can’t be solved to your satisfaction and won’t be resolved straight

away. Be prepared to work with your child’s teacher for the long-term. Parenting is easy when things are going well, but testing when

children experience difficulty. Taking a long-term, reflective view is often the best approach when your child experiences difficulty at

school.

LOOKING THROUGH THE WINDOW TR/1, Rm. 9, with Mrs. Tracey

In Room 9, Transition and Year 1 students have been working

very hard in all areas of their learning. Our recent trip to the

Territory Wildlife Park has been a highlight this term. We loved

visiting the Nocturnal House, Aquarium and the Birds of Prey

‘Around the World’ production with Mrs Emma. In Technology

& Art, our class has been designing and making musical

instruments that we will be playing during this performance.

We hope that you can all come along and watch us at the

Entertainment Centre!

the "Around the World" Production rehearsal at the Darwin

Entertainment Centre on Wednesday 19 Sep. (week 9), piano

lessons for that day will be moved to Friday 21 Sep of the same

week. Thank you.

GET INVOLVED IN THE SCHOOL BANKING PROGRAMME

Holy Spirit is excited to offer the Commonwealth Bank School

Banking programme to all students.

School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way for young

5 September 2018 Dear Parents/Carers At this time of year we are establishing class groupings for 2019. We are also in negotiations with the Catholic Education Office in regard to our staffing for next year. It is important that we have correct data to inform this process. Staff put many hours into ensuring that class groupings are balanced in terms of the academic and social needs of our students. This initial process began last term. It is important that you complete this form to communicate with us your needs for 2019. Class groupings may undertake some change into the New Year as enrolment figures can change over the next weeks with new enrolments from interstate. A request for a specific teacher is not something we can accommodate. Each of our teachers bring different qualities to the learning environment and it is important that our students develop strategies to work with these differences. However families know their children well, so if there is any consideration that will inform class groupings it is important that you let us know as soon as possible so that class cohorts can be finalised. In 2019 we will need to establish a number of classroom structures that may include single class groupings as well as composite groupings. These various structures allow us to spread our students into groupings that meet the needs of all of our learners. Children of families that return the comment page by Friday 28th of September will receive a free icy pole. Kind regards Yours sincerely Mr. Simon Duffy Principal
