Southtowns Catholic School Basketball Tournament

SCS held the 2014 Monsignor John Zeitler Basketball Tournament over the Christmas break. They competed against several other Catholic Schools in the area. Thank you to Kristen Griffin, Maggie Szymkowiak, the players, schools and all the volunteers for making this such a great event. Southtowns Catholic School had a Gingerbread Day

Students in Mrs. Jennifer Hill's Grade 2 class had a "Gin-gerbread Day!" The class had the opportunity to learn more about the famous author & illustrator, Jan Brett. They read her stories that centered around the gingerbread theme and were even able to see an interview with her. The class ended their fun filled day by making gingerbread houses. New Things Happening at the Boys and Girls Club

With the new year starting, our teen members (grades 7 to 12) have decided to make some changes! While in the past the teens have favored autonomy, this semester they have decided to break out of their recent trends and try something new! One member decided to start a German Club with our younger members. This move toward lead-ership and mentoring is not the only way the teens decided to make a change. They have also decided to enhance the Club’s “Teen Nights,” during which they usually just hang out and watch a movie after hours. Some of our teen mem-bers have instead decided to plan and host a speaker series by bringing in speakers once a month after hours to speak about common interests among the teens of the Club. The Club staff are excited by this new initiative shown by our older members!

5th Annual Alumni Basketball Game

The 5th Annual Alumni basketball game was held at the North Collins Jr.-Sr. High School on Saturday, January 10, 2015. The crowd was entertained as 24 alumni played in either women’s or men’s game. This annual event is sponsored by the North Collins Girls Varsity Club and is organized by Mr. Vince Fininzio. The lady alumni started off the evening welcoming 2 male alumni onto their team in order to have enough players. Jaden and Jordan Keough assisted the EVEN year team to score 20 points. The ODD year team ended the game with 31 points. Wendy Chuba led the scoring for the ODD year team with 12 points and Cynthia Nelson led the EVEN year team with 12 points as well. A very aggressive and competitive men’s game followed the women’s game ending in a score of 61-54 with the ODD year team claiming victory. Jordan Keough led the scoring for the ODD year with 15 points and Kyle Hoffman led the EVEN year team with 16 points. Although a little battered and most likely quite sore the next day, this family fun night left a smile on the faces of all who played or attended. Mr. Fininzio and the Varsity Club would like to thank everyone who played in the game, helped out, or attended. THIS IS A HAMMERBy Samantha Mazzotta

New Furnace? Don’t Shut Heat RegistersQ: In a recent column, you advised readers to shut heating registers in unused rooms to save energy. How-ever, that may not be com-pletely correct. I recently had a high-effi ciency fur-nace installed. The techni-cian told me not to shut off heating registers in unused rooms, as it could damage the furnace. So, shutting the registers doesn’t always apply if you have a new fur-nace. -- Sandy, via e-mail

A: Thanks for the update! I looked into guidelines for newer, high-effi cien-cy forced-air furnaces and found that, indeed, HVAC experts recommend against arbitrarily shutting off regis-ters in unused rooms. There are a number of rea-sons for this. The newer fur-naces are confi gured to heat your entire home’s square footage in the most effi cient way possible. Start shutting off registers and that setup no longer works, as the pa-rameters of the system has been changed.Shutting off several registers can affect the blower motor

in particular, according to the Energy Vanguard (www.energyvanguard.com) blog post “Can You Save Mon-ey by Closing HVAC Vents in Unused Rooms.” Newer systems feature both reg-isters and air return ducts in each room. Shut off the register, and the air return is affected as well, increas-ing air pressure and forcing the blower to work harder to circulate warm air back into the house.Air ducts in newer systems also are not normally sealed, the blog notes. So when the return air pressure goes up, air begins to escape from the duct system itself, forcing the blower to work harder to draw enough air to heat.Low airfl ow over other com-ponents of a high-effi ciency system can cause problems, too. The heating coils actual-ly can get too hot, as can the heat exchanger, increasing the risk that it could crack -- releasing exhaust gases, including carbon monoxide, into your home. So, does that mean heating registers should never, ever be shut? The answer to this

is to talk to your HVAC con-tractor. While Energy Van-guard notes that one or twotemporarily closed registersshouldn’t negatively affect the system, it’s better to ask than to wonder. What if you’re not sure ifyou have a high-effi ciencysystem? What if you havean older heating system, ora zoned system? Then it’stime to schedule a checkupwith a heating and air-con-ditioning professional, who can tell you the best way tomanage your particular heat-ing system.

HOME TIP: Going on a trip this winter? Don’t turn off the heating system: Set thethermostat to 55 degrees F, which will reduce the energybill while preventing pipesfrom freezing.

COUCH THEATERDVD PREVIEWS

By Sam Struckhoff

OF THE WEEK“John Wick” (R) -- This rain-slick action fl ick has a lot to offer, despite its ul-tra-tired plot summary: It’s about a retired assassin who goes on a rampage of re-venge. There, that’s out of the way.The titular John (Keanu Reeves) is a legendary hit man dealing with the loss of his wife to terminal illness. A blundering mafi a prince (Al-fi e Allen) interrupts John’s healing process by breaking into his home, beating him and killing his puppy -- the puppy given to John by his late wife. John makes sever-al hundred mobsters pay the Ultimate Price for this grave mistake. With more color, more ener-gy and more crunch, it just doesn’t look or feel like the other movies in its genre. It’s directed by a duo of seasoned stuntmen -- David Leitch and Chad Stahlski -- who know how to make exciting and frenetic fi ght scenes without shaking the camera like a tambourine.

“Dracula: Untold” (PG-13) -- Before he was the Master of Darkness, Dracula (Luke Evans) was a good dad and a nice boss with small fi efdom to run. Things get bloody when a Turkish overlord takes a thousand boys -- in-cluding Drac’s son -- for his big ol’ army. Dracula gets so upset that he sells his soul for some superpowers. It’s pretty much “Malefi cent” for boys ... an attempt to re-vamp a storied villain, make him relatable and cap it off with extra CG battles. The result is lukewarm; instead of sympathizing with the devil, you end up bored with

him.

“Dear White People” (PG-13) -- This fresh and fi erce satire shows us a make-be-lieve Ivy League campus, where the Age of Obama has convinced some people that racism doesn’t exist any-more, and nothing is off-lim-its. It doesn’t feel that way to the college’s black students, who see casual racism and ridiculous stereotypes ev-erywhere. The jokes and subject matter can get pretty uncomfortable, but there’s a payoff. It’s the opening shot for young writer/direc-tor Justin Simien, making it clear that he’s somebody to watch.

DOG OF THE WEEK“The Best of Me” (PG-13) -- Amanda and Dawson were

two uncommonly attractiveteens in a gold-coated coun-try town made for melodra-mas. She’s a beautiful belle with a kind spirit; he’s asoulful working-class hunkwith a brilliant mind and hurt in his eyes. They splitover tragic, contrived rea-sons, only to be reunited 20years later. They kiss in therain. They hold each other infading sunlight. They havewonderful romantic chem-istry wrapped up in cheesydialog and a frustratinglypredictable story.First love has a special place in the human heart, and may-be that’s why we keep get-ting these Nicholas Sparks movies -- each time hopingwe’ll feel that special mag-ic we got the fi rst time with “The Notebook.”
