Jamestown, Virginia (1607)

First permanent English settlement

Created through a joint-stock company (Virginia Co.)

Early Problems

Suffered from Indian attacks, famine, and disease

Colony saved through the growth of tobacco (Cash Crop)

John Rolfe smuggled tobacco seeds into Jamestown at the risk of execution by the Spanish (married Pocahontas)

Labor in Jamestown

Tobacco farms grew larger

Plantations used indentured servants

Forced labor (Slavery) introduced in 1619

Indentured Servants

• Contracting work for a fixed period of time (3-7 years) in exchange for transportation, food, clothing, lodging, and other necessities

• Most under the age of 21

• Mostly in the southern colonies

Government at Jamestown

1st Representative Government in America

House of Burgesses (1619)***

End of the Virginia Company

King James I revokes the colonial charter and makes Virginia a royal colony (controlled directly by the King) (1624)

Early self government based on Popular Sovereignty (the will of the majority) and direct democracy

Plymouth: Early Hardships

Harsh winter

More than ½ of the first pilgrims die of starvation

Native Americans help struggling Pilgrims (Thanksgiving)

Economy would depend on fur, fish, and lumber

Massachusetts Bay Colony

Settled by John Winthrop for Puritans

Founded Boston

Free, Puritan, Male members could participate in elections

The “Great Migration” brought 20,000 refugees to the colony (1630’s)

Becomes most influential settlement in New England (Fur, Fish, Shipbuilding)

Pick one colony, Plymouth or Jamestown

Pretend that you are a member of that colony as one of the FIRST people to travel there

Write a diary entry as if you are living in that time period:

You can be the age/gender you are now OR you can be different!
