2007 Placements
Summer placements:
34 opportunities with partner organisations in the UK and overseas. Suitable for undergraduates or postgraduates with a strong interest in development work. Projects in a number of fields including renewable energy, small-scale appropriate technology, environmental research and more.
6-12 month placements:
5 opportunities overseas for graduates with a strong commitment to development work. Projects include rural road construction and wind power.
2007 Placements - levels
Entry-level: The project is mainly suitable for 1st to 3rd year undergraduates or above, or those with limited experience.
Intermediate-level: The project is mainly suitable for 2nd to final year undergraduates or above, and will require some specific skills.
Advanced-level: The project is mainly suitable for 3rd to final year undergraduates or above, and will require quite specialised skills and experience.

Emergency shelter design and guidelines for planning refugee camps
8 placements of 3 months
Shelter CentreUK – Cambridge or Switzerland - Geneva
Summary
Working with Shelter Centre in Cambridge or Geneva (tbc) on projects supporting the transitional settlement and shelter of populations affected by conflict and natural disasters. These include:
• Transitional Shelter Module – further developing an emergency family tent design.• Physical planning guidelines – developing a booklet to help aid workers plan refugee camps.
There may be the opportunity to attend the ‘Shelter Meeting’ in Geneva in May or November.
Level and requirements
Entry-level to Intermediate-level. Undergraduates to postgraduates from any background. Two or three of the interns will act as Team Leaders. Graduates may have the opportunity to extend their placement length if agreed with Shelter Centre and they are able to find funding.

Improving information and communication access in the
developing world 5 placements of 3 months
AptivateUK - Cambridge
Summary
Working with Aidworld in Cambridge on developing ICT projects to make improvements to the lives of ordinary people across the developing world.
Addressing information and communication access in the developing world, in projects such as Enclusion, a project to extend communications services to rural populations in the developing world, and the Bandwidth Management and Optimisation (BMO) Box.
Level and requirements
Entry-level to Intermediate-level. Undergraduate or postgraduate students at any level are required for the research projects.
Students competent in Java and UNIX programming, and other IT skills, are helpful for the IT work.
Aidworld - 3 placements
Developing LED flashlights and design and manufacture of a simple micro-
hydro system2 placements of 3 months
Foundation for Integrated Education and Development (Funedesin)
Ecuador – Amazon region
Summary
Working with Funedesin and the local high school to further develop an efficient LED flashlight as an alternative to the existing battery-intensive lights.
Other activities likely to include the design and manufacture of a simple micro-hydro system and improving a portable water purification device.
Level and requirements
Intermediate-level. Undergraduates or postgraduates with knowledge of electrical engineering and/or business development with an engineering background. Working knowledge of Spanish is required.

Centre for Science for EnvironmentIndia – New Delhi
Summary
Working with the Centre for Science and Environment in New Delhi on projects to include:
• Developing rain-water harvesting practices, including research, planning and structural design of rain water harvesting devices.• Assisting with research on sanitation.• Working on CSE’s environmental magazine Down to Earth.
Level and requirements
Intermediate-level. Undergraduate Civil or Environmental engineers with interest in rainwater harvesting or sanitation.
For the journalism placement the intern must have good writing and research skills, as well as a background knowledge of environmental and developmental issues. A specific degree is not needed.
CSE - 3 placements

Sunseed Desert TechnologySpain – Almeria
Summary
Working with Sunseed Desert Technology in Almeria, southern Spain.
Various projects relating to renewable energy and Appropriate Technology are available. These include:
• Low-tech solar tracking systems• Clay thermal mass stoves• Water treatment by sand filtration• Biodiesel manufacture
Other projects may be available depending on the skills and interests of the intern.
Levels and requirements
Entry-level. Undergraduate students at any level, particularly suited to a younger student.
Sunseed - 1 placement
Micro Hydro Generation Plants2 placements of 3-4 months
Friends of LankaKegalle District, Sri Lanka
Summary
Working with the NGO Friends of Lanka on Micro Hydro Generation in Sri Lanka to provide electricity to remote rural areas.
• To improve the current design of micro-hydro generation plants, focusing on the turbine. • To assist with the construction of a plant, working under chartered engineers but managing local labourers and skilled technicians.• To investigate sustainability and long term use and management of the plant by monitoring the process of setting up the plant and making recommendations for future projects.
Level and requirements
High-level. Final year students or recent graduates preferred, ideally with some experience of micro hydro systems and project management.

Summary
Working with Practical Action South East Asia, in Sri Lanka.
Investigating and implementing forms of alternative energy available in Sri Lanka:•Biogas – Scientific analysis of current projects to increase output.•Biofuels – Identification of suitable crops and possible uses.•Pico-hydro – Increasing output of turbines used in rural areas .
Level and requirements
Intermediate-level. Undergraduate or graduate mechanical or electrical engineers. Prior experience of renewable energy systems useful.
Sri Lanka - 2 placements
Improving the efficiency of kilns for making bricks, assessing the impact of
energy efficient stoves and developing a rain water harvesting system
3 placements of 3 months
Mwanza Rural Housing Program (MRHP)Tanzania - Missungwi District
Summary
Working with MRHP in the Missungwi District on improving quality of life through several projects:
Develop modifications to open kilns used for brick production in order to improve their efficiency, to allow further low-cost brick production for cheaper housing options.
Undertake an impact study for energy efficiency stoves (EESs).
Develop a rain-water harvesting system, which will enable brick production during the dry season
Level and requirements
Intermediate-level: The project is mainly suitable for 3rd to 4th year undergraduates or above, and knowledge of heat transfer and thermodynamics would be desirable
MRHP - 3 placements
Development of textile concrete wall panels, and assistance with the
masterplan for a sports academy2 placements of 6 months
EsibayeniSouth Africa
Summary
Working with Esibayeni Development Projects and the local municipality in Jozini, South Africa.
The purpose of the first project is the creation of a quality sports academy. It will be the first of its kind in the province and serve mainly as a schooling and training centre for the young people of Jozini.
The affordable housing-textile concrete project aims to continue testing and research on the textile concrete and other materials, as well as design a production process to mass produce the panels for latrine and housing use.
Level and requirements
Intermediate/advanced.The sports academy project would benefit from a volunteer with experience in a civil/structural engineering discipline, whilst the affordable housing project is looking more specifically for a volunteer with a materials and/or civil/structural engineering background.
Community Based Renewable Energy Systems
1 placement of 6 - 12 months
SIBATPhilippines – Quezon City
Summary
Working with SIBAT in the Philippines on the Renewable Energy (RE) projects for indigenous rural communities. This will include:
EITHER - Work on the feasibility study development and installation of wind power systems and training local counterparts on the development and installation of wind energy systems.
OR - working on on-going research and development program initiatives particularly in electronic load control (ELC) fabrication, installation and testing for micro-hydro projects.
Level and requirements
High-level. Degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar, preferably with experience of wind technology, OR a degree in Electrical Engineering with interest in electronic load control.

NAKRUDA
Summary
Continue work on the road construction project started by EWB volunteers in 2005 . Volunteer activities will include design work, planning and logistics.
In-depth study of the causes of increasing erosion and increasing river width in the area, developing potential solutions.
Running the learning centre, an underused facility in the community, which currently has a small library, television and video and solar panels.
Level and requirements
Degree in Civil Engineering with a strong preference for some practical experience in construction, or a degree in environmental science or engineering or similar, and some experience in field studies.
Nakruda - 2 placements
2007 Placements informationSummer placements are for 10-12 weeks over the summer vacation (usually early July until September). 6-12 month placements start in summer 2007.
Placements are open to students and recent graduates (up to 4 years from graduation) who are UK residents.
Selected volunteers are responsible for arranging their travel preparations and finalising project details themselves. This is done in conjunction with the EWB-UK placements team [email protected]
All placement students MUST attend a training course at Clare Farm, near Cambridge, in June, dates tbc.
Some projects may require additional training eg. security awareness, which will be provided by EWB-UK.
2007 Placements information
Placements are NOT a holiday – you will be expected to work hard.
All placements will require very thorough research and preparation to be done in the UK before departure. Some will need you to learn new skills such as languages.
On your return you will have to complete publicity and technical reports as appropriate and complete an extensive evaluation form.
You will also have to give presentations about your experiences as part of EWB events.
Some of these projects could lead to further research in the UK, for example as a final year project.
2007 Placement costsSummer overseas placements:
EWB-UK provides grants of between 50% and 67% of the total placement cost. The remainder of money must be fundraised personally by chosen placement students – usually in the region of £400-800 but may be more.
Summer UK placements:
Basic living costs are fully funded by EWB-UK.
Year-long overseas placements:
Fully funded through EWB-UK although the intern will be expected to join the UK fundraising team to raise funds for the project. Personal contribution should be no more than for a summer placement.
Application procedure
Applications open on 1st February 2007.

Interviews are likely held between 15th – 20th March. You must be available then and may need to travel to another EWB-UK branch.
Those selected will be notified soon afterwards.
Candidates will be selected based on the evidence in the application form and interview of their technical and social suitability for the placement and their potential future contribution to development.
Important
Note that all placements are subject to alteration or cancellation at the discretion of EWB-UK.
In particular note that all EWB-UK placements are conditional on the following:
1. Successfully identifying suitable candidates from those that apply.
2. A reasonable security situation as decided by the board of trustees.
3. EWB-UK securing the necessary funds to run the projects.
