hilanthropy has been a critical component in the development ofNRH’s internationally respected clinical programs and of the ChristophRuesch Research Center, which is leading the way in the discovery
of new methods to enhance rehabilitation and to improve the lives of people with disabilities. Donor support has also been vital to enhancing the hospital's physical plant, including projects such as the TherapeuticGarden, children's unit, the unique Independence Square® therapy space, and the fully accessible Ruth S. Willoughby Playground for pediatric patients.
Our donors’ continued support has made it possible for NRH to developone of the nation’s top post-acute care networks, and to give thousands of men, women and children the chance to lead full, active and independent lives.

of PhilanthropySixteen years ago, Joe woke up feeling ill. The teenager—ahealthy 16-year-old—was suffering from a rare and debilitating virusof the spinal column. While he survived the illness, the virus haddamaged his spinal cord, leaving Joe with paraplegia.
In Virginia, his aunt and uncle, Geraldine and Alan Graham, wereshaken by the news, but the family came together to help Joe.“After weeks in the hospital, Joe was able to come home,” saysGeraldine. “But the wheelchair he had been given was bulky andheavy. As a nurse I knew that if he was going to get back to his life,he would need a light-weight, easy-to-maneuver chair. So my husband and I gave it to him as a gift.”
This personal experience brought home an eye-opening lesson.“Insurance simply doesn’t pay for everything a person needs when they have had a disabling injury or illness,” Geraldine says.“We saw what a difference having the right chair made in ournephew’s life and wanted to help other people in the same way.”
That’s when the Grahams began giving an annual gift to theNational Rehabilitation Hospital’s Patient Care Assistance Fund. It helps to fill gaps in the cost of therapy or equipment that insurancedoesn’t cover, and patients can’t afford. Last year alone, it awarded200 grants for a total of $50,000.
“Every year we give NRH a contribution to purchase a wheelchairto help a patient get back to school or work. We feel fortunate tobe able to give back and help where we can,” says Geraldine. Joe isnow 32 and a recent law school graduate. “The whole family was soproud to be there to see him accomplish his goal.”

of PhilanthropyWhen the directors of the Chalfont Foundation meet, it’s likelyover a family dinner with several generations of Vieths in attendance.
Bob and Amy Vieth are members of the second generation of theVieth family following Bob’s parents’ tradition of giving to causesclose to home—and dear to their hearts. “My mom and dad createdthe foundation about seven years ago,” says Bob. “And my sister, brother and our families are all involved.”
Every year the foundation supports schools, churches and otherorganizations that have played a role in shaping the life of the Viethfamily—or someone close to them. “We choose organizations withwhich we have some personal connection,” says Amy. For a numberof years, NRH has been among those benefitting from the Vieths’generosity.
Nearly a decade ago, a close family friend was hit by a car whilewalking on a D.C. street. His injuries were severe, leaving him withquadriplegia. He spent weeks recovering at NRH, “and we sawfirst-hand the kind of special care the hospital provides its patients. So naturally it became an important part of our charitable giving,”says Amy. Since that time, the Chalfont Foundation has made anannual gift to NRH.
“Our friend’s personal struggle showed us how, in an instant, anyone’s life can be changed irrevocably. None of us knows whendisabling injury or illness may strike. Another friend had a seriousillness and was a patient at NRH. Our own son has required occupational therapy over the years, as well. We really do appreciatethe unique skills of rehabilitation specialists,” says Amy.
“There is a special spirit at NRH that promotes recovery—it’s anoptimistic place and we are so happy to be a part of the amazingwork it does every day,” Bob says.

16 National Rehabilitation Hospital
of PhilanthropyTwo pedestrians, decades apart in age and circumstance, share a terrifyingmoment in time.
Ten years ago as banker Robert Marsteller walked along a D.C. city sidewalk, a speeding car jumped the curb and headed straight toward him. Robertjumped onto the car’s hood and braced himself until he was thrown into a parked delivery truck. In 2007, nine-year-old Charles Reges was walkingalong a familiar route close to his Potomac, Maryland, home when he wasstruck by a car.
Both suffered serious injuries that ultimately led them to the NationalRehabilitation Hospital. For Robert, a husband, father of two and talentedamateur tennis player, life made a dramatic shift. He suffered injuries to hisspinal cord resulting in quadriplegia. Charles suffered a traumatic brain injuryand spent weeks in an induced coma at Children’s National Medical Centerwhile his parents slept by his side praying for the best.
The Face
Robert Marsteller and Sarah Reges
“We didn’t know what would happen,” says Charles’ mother Sara.“His condition changed constantly from stable to unstable overthose first few weeks. And because I’m a nurse, I had to learn howto balance that role with being his mom. But Charles woke up, talking! Then we spent two months at NRH’s pediatric unit whilehe made a remarkable recovery. Though he entered NRH partiallyparalyzed, Charles walked out the door without any assistance.Today he is a happy, healthy seventh grader.”
For Robert and his family, recovery meant learning to live a full andproductive life with his injury. “I spent months at NRH while theteam helped me overcome many challenges necessary to regain myindependence. Everyone was so supportive. They understood thatmy family and friends were my lifeline and critical to my rehabilitation. My children and wife became part of the process—and NRHbecame our temporary home away from home.”
Five years ago, Robert decided to give back to the hospital. “I wanted to help NRH grow, so I joined the team to work in thePhilanthropy Office, raising the money we need to continue to thrive,” Robert says. During his tenure, NRH successfully completed a capital campaign to expand programs and services, and build an 8,500 square foot addition to the facility.
Following her son’s accident, Sara developed a passion for advancingbrain injury research and funding. She recently joined thePhilanthropy team at NRH. With Sara’s help, NRH is working tocreate a Center for Neurological Rehabilitation and Research—anational resource for thousands of people who suffer a brain injuryor brain attack each year.

The Stephen Hopkins Society
“Though my hand may shake, my heart is pure” —STEPHEN HOPKINS, 1776
Stephen Hopkins, colonial governor of Rhode Island, spentmore than 40 years of his life in public service and was asigner of the Declaration of Independence. Many medicalhistorians believe his signature on the Declaration—secondin size only to that of John Hancock—is evidence that hehad a disabling condition, possibly cerebral palsy.
The Stephen Hopkins Society recognizes those who havecontributed $1,000 or more to the Stephen Hopkins Fundin support of National Rehabilitation Hospital in 2010.
