Driving is bad for the environment. This has been an established fact for years now, and many of us will walk or cycle when the option presents itself to ‘do our bit’ for the environment. So why don’t we give the same consideration to flying?

Fourteen authors from around the world share stories about how they concluded that reducing air travel was necessary to combat climate change, and how they changed values and attitudes to business and personal travel.

The science of emissions impact is carefully balanced in well-thought-out and accessibly written articles that aim to educate people about the rewards and costs of other, more sustainable, methods of transportation.

The book contains three sections, each containing five stories from the personal experiences of the authors, all placed in the global context:

• Part 1 Thinking beyond flying• Part 2 Business beyond flying• Part 3 Savouring the journey

A must-read book for anyone who is trying to reduce their carbon footprint.

beyond FlyingRethinking air travel in a globally connected world

edited by Chris watson“If you’re committed to cutting your flights, this book will show you that you’re not alone. If you’re a regular flyer, it will inspire and challenge you to see what you can do too.” – Lynn Sloman, Special Adviser to the Board of Transport for London

The editor Chris Watson is an architect and a passionate advocate of sustainability in business as well as private travel. He has run his own international business using teleconferencing and alternative methods of travel instead of flying for the last 5 years. Chris continues to spread the message of Beyond Flying all over the world without resorting to air travel.

Conventional wisdom is difficult to question, even when it is misguided and contains many contradictions. Gardening has its share of such ‘myths’ - some with discernible origins in history, others that have become established for no obvious reason - and they often obscure simpler and easier methods of working.

This delightfully illustrated book reveals how common sense triumphs and crops are more successful when these ‘rules’ are overturned.

Charles Dowding brings his wealth of knowledge and experience to bear in this book, giving practical guidance and advice that will save seasoned gardeners time and give new gardeners heart.

The Hempcrete Book is a detailed practical manual for architects, surveyors, professionals and self-builders. It explains how to source and mix hempcrete and how to use it in new builds and restoration. In colour throughout, fully illustrated with beautiful photographs, this book provides a full explanation of construction techniques, highlighting potential pitfalls and how to avoid them. It includes a comprehensive resources section and examples of completed builds, with design notes.

Hempcrete is a building material with excellent properties. It’s made from lime and hemp shivs (a waste product from hemp fibre growing) and can be used for walls, floors, and for roof insulation.

Hempcrete is breathable, absorbing and emitting moisture; this helps regulate internal humidity, avoiding trapped moisture and mould growth, and creating healthier buildings. It provides excellent acoustic and thermal insulation and thermal mass. It’s light-weight, reducing construction costs, and it’s environmentally friendly: it locks up CO2 for the life of the building, and the hemp doesn’t require agrochemicals or insecticides in its cultivation.

For anyone interested in designing or building with hempcrete this book will be indispensable.

The author Georgie Newbery is an artisan flower farmer and florist, supplying cut flowers direct to customers from her smallholding in Somerset. Georgie set up and runs her own business and is a leading authority on growing cut flowers. She also runs courses on growing and arranging cut flowers, and on marketing via social media for fellow growers.

The Flower Farmer’s Year is a unique and entertaining look at how to plant, maintain and keep evolving a productive cut-flower garden.

Whether you want to devote a corner of your garden to a stand of sweet peas and some cosmos, take up flower production for gate sales, or make a livelihood from cut flowers, Georgie Newbery will take you through everything from planning your garden to budgeting and marketing.

With the carbon cost of imported cut flowers so high, people are increasingly growing their own or looking toward local suppliers, making backyard flower businesses an increasingly attractive option for producer and consumer alike.

With plenty of stories about Georgie’s successes and the mistakes she’s made along the way, The Flower Farmer’s Year is not only an entertaining read, it is also a highly informative manual.

With its wonderful photographs and quirky illustrations, it’s a book to dream over - before enabling you to make those dreams a reality.

The pressing issues of today clamour for solutions, yet efforts to effect social change have, to a surprising degree, been based on little more than hunches. This book dispels many of the myths that prevent social change projects from succeeding, and replaces them with the best of what we know from social and motivational psychology and lessons from projects that have worked.

Everything these days has to be ‘sustainable’. But sustainability is an age-old aspiration, one that is deeply rooted in human culture. In clear and thought-provoking terms, Ulrich Grober reassesses the concept of sustainability, using a range of fascinating historical instances of its application. He shows that it is always born of crisis and yet also marks the birth of a new awareness.
