The largest town in the Wyre Forest District, just 17 miles south west of Birmingham, Kidderminster, through which flows the River Stour and the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal, is home to the new national Carpet Museum. Recently awarded 5 Stars by “Trip Advisor”, the museum provides an exciting and interactive environment complete with shop, Carpet Archive Centre and library.

Kidderminster Town Hall, a Victorian building situated at the heart of the Conservation Area, has played a central role in the town’s historical events and welcomed many royal visitors and dignitaries. Speeches of eminent leaders, such as a young Winston Churchill, Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin, explorer Ernest Shackleton and women’s rights campaigner Emmeline Pankhurst, have echoed off its walls. The Town Hall today remains at the centre of live music in Wyre

Forest, from heavy rock concerts to professional entertainers, local choirs, bands and orchestras.

The town boasts three shopping centres, a retail park and numerous independent and multi-national traders providing a range of shops. There are many pubs, restaurants and cafes to choose from and a twice weekly outdoor retail market.

There is plenty to do in Kidderminster, but if you wanted to see more of the Wyre Forest District, boaters, cyclists and walkers can use the canal/towpath to access Stourport and the River Severn from the town.

Kidderminster has mainline rail access to and from London, Birmingham and Worcester and it is the starting point for the world famous Severn Valley Heritage Railway, which runs for 16 miles to Bridgnorth.

This lively Georgian canal town in the heart of the Severn Valley offers a perfect day

out through its fascinating canal and architectural heritage, beautiful location on the banks of the River Severn, vibrant shopping streets, excellent choices of places to eat and drink, events, attractions and activities. The restored and unique historic Canal Basins provide a

tranquil and picturesque scene, with a cafe and riverside pub, heritage room and events. The Riverside Meadows and Amusements provides plenty of entertainment, including Heritage open days and Halloween and Christmas celebrations, which all take place around this area. Why not combine your visit to Stourport with a stop off at Bewdley or Kidderminster, just a short distance away?

STOURPORT ON SEVERN

A successful mix of old with the new is celebrating its 50th year as a “new town” in 2014. Home to several historical sites, such as The National Needle Museum, ruins of 11th century Bordesley Abbey and the remains of a medieval moated settlement ‘Moons Moat’, Redditch has plenty to offer visitors.

The modern Kingfisher Shopping Centre, ranked 20th out of 100 centres in the UK, features mosaics by Sir Eduardo Luigi Paolozzi, a new restaurant quarter, cinema and gym. Outside of the shopping centre, the Church Green conservation area houses the 18th century St Stephen’s Church, bandstand with events throughout the year, established open air market and refurbished library. The Edwardian Palace Theatre shows a mix of new and well known acts and, along with golf, sports centres, a national standard BMX track , wild life, Green Flag Countryside Parks, bars, restaurants, cafes and bingo hall, Redditch is a great place to visit!

REDDITCH

is a small traditional market town of character surrounded by beautiful rolling countryside, situated 13 miles South West of Birmingham City Centre and 16 miles North East of Worcester.

Recent regeneration worth circa £2m investment has seen major enhancements to the Town Centre High Street. If you visit from autumn onwards you will see the results of two years of hard work to the public realm designed to enhance the heritage of the area. Natural stone and granite paving materials have

been combined with lighting, small trees and new street furniture to create a unique and striking avenue down the traditional, long high street. A new Town Square has been created, where regular events will be staged throughout the year. The active community promotes a vibrant music and arts scene, not only in the new space created on the High Street, but also within the Artrix, a cinema, arts, music and comedy centre. Visit the refurbished outdoor market on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Wyre Forest District Wyre Forest is large enough to have plenty on offer but small enough to be able to go from one town to another in around 20 to 30 minutes.

One of the largest remaining ancient woodlands in Britain, the 6,000 acres Wyre Forest is a haven for wildlife and home to many rare species of flora and fauna. These can be seen on three way-marked trails of between one and three miles in length, all of which begin and end at the Visitor and Discovery centre at Callow Hill, which boasts a fantastic adventure playground. Other attractions in the forest include cycle trails, bridle paths, orienteering routes and the Go Ape High Wire adventure.

BEWDLEY

EATShopping for fine foods to go home with, such as those found in award winning farm shops and delicatessens or looking to eat out while visiting, Worcestershire has a variety of places to eat and drink where the owners source from local producers.

This attractive Georgian town sits directly upon the River Severn, an area with a rich

agricultural and industrial history and a gateway to the Wyre Forest itself and the English–Welsh borderlands known as The Marches. Retaining its unique charm with a wealth of listed buildings, at its heart is the much acclaimed Bewdley Museum where you can see local crafts people at work. The museum also houses the Tourist Information Centre, where staff are on hand to help you make the most of your visit.

The River Severn (the longest river in the United Kingdom) passing straight through Bewdley has long been a favoured spot for angling. The ancient woodland of the Wyre Forest and National Nature Reserve is to the west of the town, providing excellent opportunities to discover a rich diversity of wildlife, forest flora and fauna - a great place to visit for autumn colours.

The award winning Severn Valley Steam Railway calls at the town, so you can start your journey in Kidderminster and stop off at Bewdley for a while. The National Cycle Network Route 45 also passes directly through, with a number of circular walks converging on the town centre to link up with the surrounding countryside. Whether cycling or walking, you’re sure to build up an appetite, so why not stop and enjoy lunch, dinner or afternoon tea overlooking the river?

Close to the centre is the award winning West Midland Safari and Leisure Park, which, like the Severn Valley Railway, has an exceptional events calendar throughout the year, providing plenty for visitors to see and do. Bewdley has an attractive shopping and riverside area offering a range of pubs, restaurants and cafes and even has its own micro-brewery!

A visit to the Elgar Birthplace Museum is a must do for any visitor who really wants to get an understanding of what made the great man tick. Surrounded by the iconic landscape of the Malvern Hills that gave him so much inspiration, the museum provides a good background to his work and career both in Malvern and further afield.

Elgar’s ‘Cello Concerto’ will be performed at this year’s ‘The Autumn in Malvern Festival’ by the cellist Jamie Walton and the National Orchestra of Wales. This international festival, now in its 25th year, takes place every September and October and plays host to some of the world’s leading classical

music and literary artists. This year sees a visit from the Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy. Over time, the festival has celebrated the works of many other great artists such as George Bernard Shaw, and also highlighted the work of Malvern Festival Director Sir Barry Jackson during the 30s and 40s. An audio led walk on Sir Barry Jackson’s life and work in Malvern is now available on an MP3 player which can be borrowed from The Malvern Tourist Information Centre.

Take a tour around The Teme Valley! The Teme Valley has some of the most attractive countryside in the Heart of England. The ancient border town of Tenbury Wells has been an important crossing point over the river Teme since the Iron Age. Famous for its unique blend of buildings, such as the Pump Rooms, museum and the recently refurbished Regal Cinema, the town is a good place to visit any time during the year. A Farmers’ Market selling local produce runs every third Saturday and the Teme Valley is also a good area for cycling and walking.

Skirting the borders of Worcestershire and Herefordshire you come to the small village of Newnham Bridge, which formerly had a railway station on the Tenbury Line from Bewdley to Woofferton Junction. Carrying on along the A443 you come to Abberley, home to Abberley Hall School, a preparatory school set in the grounds of Abberley Hall, which also contains the Abberley Clock Tower, the setting for the children’s book by Gene Kemp, ‘The Clock Tower Ghost’.

Next is the village of Witley, home to Witley Court, a Jacobean country house extended on a number of occasions throughout its history, but which became derelict after a spectacular fire in 1937. The mansion, formerly one of the finest in the Midlands, is now in the care of English Heritage, who describe it as their number one ruin. Close by is the church of Saint Michael and All Angels. It was completed in 1735, and is one of the finest Italian Baroque churches in Britain. It incorporates a richly gilded ceiling with a number of paintings by Antonio Bellucci.

HOME OF HISTORY www.visitworcestershire.org

Situated in the picturesque Worcestershire countryside the plans of the Gunpowder Plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605 were conceived in Huddington Court in Worcestershire. Following the arrest of Guy Fawkes, some of the plotters fled back to Huddington Court and hid in the former Priest holes.

Worcestershire holds a whole host of Bonfire Night firework displays, from small and intimate affairs to large scale spectacular displays. The largest events take place at the Three Counties Showground in Malvern, Pitchcroft Racecourse in the city of Worcester and at West Midland Safari and Leisure Park.

Visit Witley Court and Gardens this winter and step back to a bygone age of great wealth and grandeur. Once one of England’s great country houses, Witley Court is now a spectacular ruin after a devastating fire in 1937. Join one of our winter Behind the Scenes Tours and enjoy exclusive access to parts of the historic court rarely open to visitors.

Be intrigued by the secrets of Witley’s partying past, including the famous lavish house parties hosted by the Princes of Wales (later to become King Edward VII). As part of our winter events programme we are also hosting a Christmas Wreath Making Workshop especially for the festive season. Led by our expert, learn about the different techniques used to make your wreath and get creative with the opportunity to make something special to take home with you. We look forward to welcoming you this winter at Witley Court. Pre-booking is essential.

BEHIND THE SCENE TOURS

ROOTS OF THE GUNPOWDER PLOT

HISTORY

A Pub Steeped in English HistoryThe Fleece Inn is a historic timber framed pub located on the edge of the Cotswolds. The pub is steeped in history with many stories to tell, and is one of the only pubs in the country to be owned by the National Trust. The building was already 71 years old when the Lancastrians marched by own their way to their final defeat in the War of the Roses at the Battle of Tewkesbury in 1471, and it was 200 years old when the Gunpowder Plotters rode past on their ill-fated attempt to blow up Parliament.

Today, visitors are given a warm welcome, real ales and locally sourced homemade food from right on the pubs doorstep in the Vale of Evesham. The pub regularly celebrates its historic connections with re-enactments and events, including the annual Apple and Ale Festival in October, and in May 2015 the pub will be hosting a ‘Civil War Day’, with historic re-enactors.

Mansion House’s Heritage Lottery Funded Repair Works Continue

Essential Restoration Work at Harvington HallWork began recently on the 400 year old sandstone lintels around windows on the East front of Harvington Hall. This was as a result of a quinquennial survey completed last autumn at the Hall, which outlined the need for over £100,000 of remedial work.

The first phase of the work was on the sandstone surrounds of the various windows, which had been first put in during the Elizabethan remodelling of the Hall, so had lasted well! As well as restoration of the sandstone itself, the leaded lights were refurbished; in some places replacing the lead and in others the glass. The firm Hamlet Ltd, expert Restoration Stone Masons from Lichfield, were appointed to the job, which began with erecting scaffolding directly into the moat below the windows.

Further work will continue later in the season as funds become available. If anyone would like to become a ‘Friend of Harvington Hall’ or make a donation to the Restoration Fund, please get in touch on 01562 777846 or via [email protected]

www.harvingtonhall.com

The house will be covered from top to bottom in some extraordinary scaffolding whilst repairs are carried out to the building. Breaking away from traditional designs, but still sharing Croome’s histowry and characters, the scaffolding will be decorated with a work of incredible street art that envelops the whole house, so make sure you take in every angle.

There will also be the chance for visitors to explore the top floor of the scaffold and take in views of the parkland and the countryside beyond, before finishing off their adventure with a drink and a snack in our new Sky Café, perched on top of the scaffolding.

Visitors can also see behind the scenes of the conservation work with Croome Court Uncovered.  Each month visitors will be able to see a different aspect of the intricate repair work, with something new to discover on every visit.  Throughout this year and in 2015, work will be carried out right in front of visitors, with demonstrations, trails, lectures, displays and hands-on activities for adults and children.

It’s going to be a busy time!

Worcester is a magical place to explore at Christmas and, indeed, all year round. With the  splendour of the imposing Guildhall on the High Street and the backdrop of the magnificent Cathedral at one end, the City certainly sets itself apart from any other. Worcester offers a great mix of major retailers and independents who combine to offer a great package for all ages.

Set amidst Greyfriars, our National Trust property, Friar Street is a picture postcard to step into, with delightful boutiques, jewellery, gifts and health and well being shops intertwined with timber framed buildings.

Worcester’s shops pride themselves on providing fantastic customer service and this is evident throughout the city centre, be it in  Crown Gate  Shopping Centre, the eclectic Reindeer Court, delightful  Hop Market  or in any of the surrounding streets.

If you are looking for bigger stores, Worcester has everything you need, with a large Marks & Spencer, House of Fraser, Primark and TK Maxx amongst many others. Recent arrival in the city, Joules, has joined White Stuff, Fat Face, Monsoon, H&M, Next and Dorothy Perkins, Burtons and Top Shop / Top Man to create a fashion hub on the High Street. With over 3600 car parking spaces, most of which have reduced charges that were introduced earlier this year, as well as late night shopping on Thursdays from 13th November, Worcester is a  unique and easy  place to shop this Christmas!

The Food Quarter at Chapel Walk in CrownGate Shopping Centre is proving to be a huge hit with visitors and has firmly established itself as a destination for food lovers from far and wide. Visitors can choose from a range of the fantastic bars, cafés or restaurants within the Food Quarter.

Bill’s has plenty of seating inside, as well as a sunny outdoor seating area. Quirky in style and shape, it’s a mix of quiet seating booths and bigger tables for sharing. Open all day, from breakfast through until suppertime, with its low ceilings, exposed brickwork, quiet booths and leather club chairs, it has an intimate feel, especially in the evening, when we turn the lights down low and let the candles work their magic. Carluccio’s

offer an all-day Italian restaurant, food shop and delicatessen. Mixing contemporary design with charming nods to modern Italy, Carluccio’s is the ideal destination for an Italian coffee and hearty breakfast, right through to three-course candlelit suppers, or a festive family feast, and even a spot of foodie retail therapy. House is dedicated to serving excellent food and delivering it to you with great service. Choose from a range of bottled beers and wines and sit inside for that warm friendly appeal or outside and soak up the great atmosphere of Worcester. The Green Room serves only the best homemade burgers in town, and new to their menu are hot gourmet sandwiches and hot dogs. All of their ingredients are locally sourced and free range.

Winter Inspiration at EckingtonIn winter time and especially at Christmas, everyone’s thoughts turn to food. So where better to go for inspiration and advice than Eckington Manor? With fabulous fresh menus created with produce from its own 260 acre farm and, of course, the famous cookery school, it’s not surprising that Eckington Manor is recognised internationally for its wonderful food.

What is less known is that Eckington, together with its luxurious accommodation and renowned restaurant, also offers a range of excellent small foods and cooking equipment for sale in its reception area.  As one would expect, there is nothing ordinary here. From its Pepper Relish and Special Pickled Shallots to its unique salad dressings and marmalades, all the produce is created carefully by hand in Eckington Manor’s own kitchens.  There is a range of special drinks, from apple juice to the famous Eckington dry cider, and also some small kitchen items that can make all the difference in successful cooking, including a good range of top range Swilling specialist knives.  Even better, get in quickly and you are able to buy meat from the award winning Aberdeen Angus cattle and other stock carefully reared on the fresh riverside pastures of Eckington Manor.

Arley Arboretum is not only a great day out and a dream escape from the bustle of everyday life, it offers plenty to do for all ages, from the Italian garden  with its fountain for the adults to the Dinosaur and Fairy Trails, as well as  a maze  for the young ones.

Additionally, you can come into the plant sales area, which is open to everyone with no need to pay for admission.

A range of high quality plants grown by the expert gardeners are available for sale at reasonable prices.

Although the Arboretum is primarily a stage for the magnificent range of mature trees, over the last few years many new and existing areas have been planted or replanted, adding colour and interest to the Arboretum and gardens throughout the year.

THE LAND THAT IS NOW BODENHAM ARBORETUM WAS PURCHASED FORTY YEARS AGO BY THE LATE DAVID BINNIAN AND HIS WIFE JENNIFER. WHAT BEGAN AS A HOBBY, PLANTING A FEW TREES EACH WINTER, HAS DEVELOPED INTO AN AREA OF OUTSTANDING LANDSCAPE BEAUTY AND INTEREST.

His vision was to create a modern landscape that encapsulated his love and passion for trees and the countryside. Set in 168 acres, there are some 3000 species of trees and shrubs and two chains of pools and lakes. The epicentre lies around the Big Pool, where many rare and ornamental trees can be seen in flower or fruit at all times of the year, their autumn colours being a special beauty. Through a patchwork

quilt of pools, plantations, dells and glades, habitats provide for flora and fauna, insect life and numerous species of resident and migrating birds.

Every Christmas time, the old farm buildings are transformed to tell the biblical story of the nativity, with life size wooden characters and Bodenham’s animals, including their own donkeys.

The Visitor Centre is an award winning environmentally sensitive building carved out of the hillside, serving a variety of home cooked food and cakes, including our very popular carvery. The pork, Herefordshire beef and lamb is from the farm and the vegetables are fresh and local when possible.

A LOVE AND PASSION FOR NATURE

HAVE AN AUTHENTIC WORCESTERSHIRE FOOD EXPERIENCEOne of the best reasons to opt for Worcestershire if you are looking for a self catering holiday is the ability to purchase local food and drink direct from the huge variety of farm shops and farmers’ markets.

There are farm shops dotted throughout the county with an abundance of local produce for sale, helping to provide visitors with an authentic Worcestershire experience. You can purchase seasonal fruit and vegetables, free range meat, poultry and game and beverages, including locally produced wine, beer and cider, as well as soft drinks. Baked goods, including freshly made bread and cakes, are also readily available, as well as condiments, preserves and jams. If you are a cheese lover, you will love the variety of cheeses available, including Old Worcester White, Double Worcester and a Worcestershire Sauce Cheese, as well as the more well known varieties.

Farm shops include Hopley’s Farm Shop near Bewdley, Wayside Farm Shop near Evesham, Top Barn Farm Shop near Worcester, Becketts Farm Shop near Bromsgrove and The Stables Farm Shop near Redditch. The Teme Valley Farmers’ Market near Worcester is one of the oldest farmers’ markets in the country and is located in a great setting next to the River Teme. Other farmers’ markets are hosted regularly, particularly in the market towns of Bewdley, Evesham and Tenbury Wells.

GREAT WITLEY CHURCH HAS THE MOST AMAZING BAROQUE INTERIOR OF ANY CHURCH IN BRITAIN, AND THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE HAS JUST BEEN ENHANCED BY THE NEW CRYPT DISPLAY, WHICH REVEALS SOME VERY UNUSUAL FEATURES. Renowned as ‘Britain’s finest Baroque church’, Great Witley Church is set within the glorious grounds of Witley Court (English Heritage).

Following the opening of three of the vaults by archaeologists, there are now nine 18th century lead coffins on view, including two of the Foley family. Some of the coffins have collapsed in to partially reveal the skeletons of their long deceased occupants. The coffin chute, which was used to lower the coffins from the church above, is an example of 18th century ingenuity. A replica coffin from the period shows how the coffins would have looked in their original state and a coffin stone, used to protect the deceased, has been recovered from the graveyard.

A fourth vault, which is lined with marble and

granite, holds the magnificent red granite sarcophagus of the first Earl of Dudley. His body was placed there in 1885 as a temporary resting place whilst his tomb at Worcester Cathedral was built, but it was sixty eight years before his remains were finally moved to their rightful place.

A recent addition to the display is the 1804 Samuel Thorp tower clock, which for many years was in the church cupola before being replaced in 1877. The clock has now been moved to the crypt, where it has been undergoing careful restoration to return it to working condition.

There is also a new photographic display relating to the Church and the adjoining Witley Court, and a lovely tea room serving a wonderful selection of homemade cakes, as well as a light lunch menu.

At present, the crypt is only open from April to October on Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays from 1p.m. to 4 p.m. It is open to visiting groups by appointment.

CRYPT AT GREAT WITLEY CHURCH REVEALS LEAD COFFINS AND MUCH MORE

Once upon a time and not so long ago, ‘Made in Britain’ implied quality and reliability. When you purchased a commodity you were demonstrating trust and loyalty, as well as helping the national and/or local community… but, as we all know, the world has changed quite a lot since then! The quality of imports improved dramatically and many British companies had no choice but to manufacture offshore to meet the economic imperative. The internet has also opened up the world... so what does this mean for our small craft businesses?

Situated in the picturesque Worcestershire countryside (just off the M5 & M42 motorways) and only 15 miles south of the centre of Birmingham is the Jinney Ring Craft Centre in the little village of Hanbury. There are 12 thriving craft businesses all with very different products and quite different markets but with more than just a couple of things in common: they are all operated by true craft workers who not only hand-make everything they sell, but can also be seen at work in their respective crafts.

The Craft Centre has a long held philosophy of providing a home for older British crafts, including the skills of glass blowing and stained glass work, woodworking (including violin making and fretwork), pottery, oil painting and jewellery making. In addition, there are the differing skills of the chocolatier, natural skin care products, picture framing, millenary and, of course, the plants and shrubs unit. These businesses survive by coming together to make the Craft Centre a destination worth visiting, as well as a location where visitors can buy unique works of art through a range of different styles, skills and prices.

ENGLAND'S ANSWER TO THE TOUR DE FRANCEThe Tour of Britain, last year won by Sir Bradley Wiggins, is the UK's biggest professional cycle event, with 108 top cyclists racing through nine stages, covering more than 1,350 kilometres.

The 2014 event starts on Sunday 7th September in Liverpool, with a world-class field competing over eight days before culminating in a time trial and Criterium in London on Sunday 14th September. More than a million fans are expected to line the route to watch the country's largest free-to-spectate sporting event.

The fourth stage of the Tour of Britain starts in Worcester city centre adjacent to the new iconic award winning library, The Hive. The route heads on out to Great Malvern with the first 'King of the Mountain' trial before heading out to Upton upon Severn, Pershore, Evesham and Broadway. The second 'King of the Mountain' trial will be Snowshill, near the picturesque honeycoloured Cotswold village of Broadway.

Following the great success of last season, the Worcester Wolves Basketball team return to action at the University of Worcester Arena on Friday 3rd October 2014.

After moving into the brand new, state-of-the-art venue at the beginning of the last campaign, Wolves and their supporters enjoyed a thrilling season, which culminated in them winning both the BBL Trophy and the BBL Play-Off final – the first pieces of major silverware in the club’s history.

This success capped an astonishing rise to prominence for a club that were only formed in 2000 and have worked their way up from England Basketball League Division Three.

Now firmly established as key members of Britain’s top league, the Wolves regularly attract huge crowds to their riverside home, and will be looking to add to the extraordinary success of last year when they begin the new campaign.

The club’s home games take place on Friday evenings at the University of Worcester Arena with a tip off time of 7.30pm (doors open at 6.30pm).
