Meet Student Ashley MetelusAs a junior Interdisciplinary
Social Sciences major, Ashley
Metelus traveled to Uganda
for the summer, joining her
mentor Dr. Jody McBrien
(College of Education) to
study how Uganda’s war has
affected education, children
and families. She interviewed
teachers and students at
Ugandan schools and at a day
program dedicated to providing
street children with basic
education. “I learned many
things during my trip, but the
number one thing I will always
remember is that education
is valued in Uganda,” Ashley
said. “Many of the students
stated that without education
they would gain nothing in this
world.” Her research earned
awards at the USFSM Research
Symposium and the National
Conference for Undergraduate
Research. With her passion
for people affected by
genocide, Ashley will continue
researching and working in the
study of human rights abuses.
“It was definitely an experience that I will cherish for the rest of my life. It has taught me to appreciate all the educational opportunities that we have in America.”

The College of Business fosters student success through a strong
curriculum that develops critical thinking, problem-solving, cross-cultural
communication and the ability to work both independently and as a team.
By 2025, it is estimated that at least one-third of the jobs in
the United States will be positions that do not exist today. Our
commitment to giving our students the tools needed to keep pace
with the rapid changes ahead shapes our College of Business
curriculum. Students are given opportunities to network and
build strong connections with local, national and international
businesses. For a list of some of the companies that hire our
graduates, visit usfsm.edu/companies.

College of Business is AACSB-
accredited, an honor achieved

schools in the world.

Meet Alumnus Jeff BenninghoffOver the past 20 years, Jeff
Benninghoff has worked
his way up in the Calkins
Media organization from staff
accountant to his current
roles of vice president for the
entire Broadcast Division and
vice president and general
manager of Sarasota’s WWSB
ABC7. In addition to being a
CPA, Jeff strengthened his
array of problem solving,
communications and strategic
and analytical business skills
by earning an MBA from
USFSM in 2007. The father of
two is a great role model for
anyone considering a career in
business today. “Stay flexible
and adaptable,” Jeff advises.
“The business model is
changing (and always has)…
keep an open mind and be
willing to step outside your
comfort zone—whether it be a
different position, taking on a
new assignment that is outside
your discipline or moving to a
different market. Don’t be afraid
to take calculated risks.”
“The broad range of learning in the MBA provides the tools and instills a foundation that can be used and recalled upon in just about any business discipline and situation.”

Meet Alumna Crystal ZinnFor Crystal Zinn, teaching
has been a lifelong dream.
Within a week of graduating
from USFSM, her dream
became reality: Myakka City
Elementary contacted her in
need of a kindergarten teacher.
One of Crystal’s passions is
integrating the arts into her
lessons and developing fun,
creative ways for her students
to learn-whether through
music, crafts or class skits.
She recalls struggling with
math in school and credits
Dr. Hunsader’s Teaching
Mathematics course with
fueling her passion for making
math fun for children. As a
student, she was president
of USFSM’s (SM)² club for
math educators, volunteered
at USFSM’s SMART Fair and
annually attended statewide
and national Council of Teachers
of Mathematics conferences.
All of her experiences unite
in the classroom, where her
greatest joy is seeing each
student’s day-to-day growth.
“I have known this since I was little: teaching is what I was meant to do. I cannot imagine doing anything else. It is not just my career-it is my passion.”

Hospitality and Information Technology are two of the fastest growing
industries in Florida. USFSM recognized these opportunities for students
and developed the College of Hospitality and Technology Leadership to
house these two areas of study under one umbrella.
Our Hospitality Management curriculum combines
essential core courses such as finance, accounting and economics
with courses that focus on their application to the hospitality field.
Our Information Technology curriculum bridges the
gap between computer science and management information
systems with an emphasis on knowledge-based technology and
topics including programming, applications, networking, system
administration and management.

CHTL students organize,
prepare and serve an upscale

Check out our Culinary Innovation LabThe USFSM Culinary
Innovation Lab (CIL) on
Lakewood Ranch Main Street
is a turn-key, hands-on facility
that is fully equipped as a
hub for sharing industry
knowledge. It connects
USFSM and the community
in the art and science of food
preparation through cooking
demonstrations, catering of
signature university events
and custom designed classes
in food production strategies,
menu development, flavor
profiling, event planning
and staff management. It is
a laboratory for innovation
and learning, including food
sustainability research.
Students enjoy classes in the
beautifully equipped 4,000
square-foot space. The CIL
has been the preparation site
for HospitaBull Evening and is
an excellent venue for donor
receptions, student events,
Lakewood Ranch’s popular
First Fridays and meetings with
hospitality industry partners.
“Our unique living-learning laboratory and strong local partnerships advance the student experience and build long-term community and industry relationships.”
