Haci Bayram-I Veli'nin isteğiyle Yapilan Bir Tercüme: ince Bedreddin ve Tercüme-i Lemaat'1
Araştırma Görevlisi Ercan Alkan Marmara üniversitesi ilahiyat Fakültesi, Tasavvuf Anabilim Dalı
Özet
Kendisine nispet edilen dört nutk-ı
şerif dışında Hacı Bayram-ı Veli'nin
günümüze intikal eden herhangi bir
eseri yoktur. Fakat o eser vermeksizin
müessir olabilmiş, tesir ve nüfuz ala
nı bulabi.lmiş bir sufıdir. Ayrıca klasik
tasawufı metinlere de ilgisini esi~ge
. memiş hatta bazı tasawufı eserleri
sohbetlerinde mütalaa etmiştir. Bu
eserlerden birisi de Anadolu coğraf
yasında 13. yüzyılda kaleme alınan
Fahreddin-i lraki'ye ait Lemadt adlı
eserdir. Sohbetlerinde Lemadt'ın ru
muz ve esrarından söz eden Hacı Bay
ram'ın Arapça ve Farsça'ya aşina olma
yan dervişlerinin üzüntülerini gider
mek maksadıyla Hacı Bayram'ın yakın
çevresinde bu lunan ince Bedreddin
tarafından bu eser, Tür~çe'ye tercü
me edilmiştir. Lemadt tercümesi Hacı
Bayram'ın ve çevresindeki ilk Bayrami
neslin tasawufı birikime olan ilgisini .
ve frtibatın ı göstermesi açı sından dik-
kat çekici bir örnektir. Dolayısıyla teb- ~
liğimizde bu eserin muhtevası ve bu ~
muhtevadan hareketle de Bayramilik
üzerindeki hakim tasawufı geleneğin
ana unsurları tespit edilmeye çaJ'ışı la-
caktır.
Giriş:
Şeyhü'l-islam (Hdce Abdullah Enseiri
Herevi) şöyle dedi: "Bu yolun pirle
rini görmek sufıler topluluğunun
sünnetidir. 'Falan piri görmüştür, fi
lan şeyhle sohbet etmiştir' şeklinde
söylenilen sözler, o mertebeye eri
şen kişiler hakkında söylenmektedir:'
Yine o şöyle dedi:"Şeyhlerin cemalini
görmeyi ganimet bilmek gerekir. Zira
pirterin yüzünü görme fırsatı kaçarsa
onu telafi etmek mümkün olmaz, o
daima bulunan bir şey değildir. Ara
fat'ta vakfenin her yıl tekran olur,
ama onların yüzünü görmek ise her
zaman olmaz. Onu kaybedenin tek
rar bulması mümkün değildir." 128

Son "Faide" ise mütercim tarafından

husus eserin yaygınlığı ve sonraki yüz

bir veridir. Lemaattercümesi Hacı Bay

gösteren bir metindir. VücCıd, a'yan-ı

bile, onun sohbetinde bulunan hali

bağlantılı olarak dile getirdiği husus

söylemek pek uzak bir ihtimal olmasa
gerektir. Dolayısıyla da kanaatimizce
Lemaat tercümesini Hacı Bayran::ı_-ı
Veli'nin bir metni gibi okumamızda
hiç bir sakınca yoktur. Nitekim şahsi
kütüphanemizde bulunan bir Lemaat
tercümesi nüshasının da hatimesinde
"Kutbu'I-Aktab Hacı Bayram-ı Veli'nin
fem-i saadetlerinden işitilmiştir -Mes
muun min fey'-i Kutbu'I-Aktab Hacı
Bayram Veli-" şeklinde yazılı olan kay
c;fın, Hacı Bayram-ı Veli ile söz konusu
metin arasındaki ilişkiyi ve özdeşliği
göstermesi açısından önemli bir kayıt
olduğunu düşünüyoruz. Ayrıca Fuat
Bayramoğlu, kendi özel kütüphane
sinde bulunan eksik bir Lemaat yaz
m~sının başlığının, her nedense ve
·her nasılsa "Haza Risa/e-i Lemaat-I Şeyh
el-Hac Bayram" başlığını taşıdığını ve
.· Sayın Kemal Etker'e ait bir yazmada
da aynı şekilde yazılı olduğunu belirt
mektedir. Bu duruma Fuat Bayramoğ
lu, Lemaôt'ın Hacı Bayram'ın işareti ve
isteği üzerine ince Bedreddin tarafın

olabileceğini söylemektedir.181 Kısaca

~ Summary and appreciation of the first Bayrami
generatian towards the Sufi legacy.
Therefore, in our presentation, we
will attempt to highlight the core
elements of this book's contents, as
well as those of the prevalent Sufi
tradition that .predominated the
Bayrami movement.
-.... ~ There are no extant works of Hacı w Bayram-ı Veli taday, except four

verselets attributed to him. However,
he isa Sufi who succeeded in exerting
great influence. without literary

attention to classical Sufi te~ts and
even expounded on some of them in
his discourses and gatherings. One of
the se works is Di vi ne F/ashes (Lama'at),
authored by Fakhruddin lraqi in the
Anatolia region in the 13th century.
This work wa~ translated into Turkish
by Bedreddin the Slim with a view
to giving solace to those dervishes
areund Hacı Bayram who were not
farnillar with the Arabic and Persian
languages, for Hacı Bayram often

and discussions. The translation
of Divine F/ashes is a remarkable
example in that it shows the interest

Sheikh Al-Islam [Khajah Abdullah

uttered in reference to the people who
have attained that spiritual level:' On
another occasion, he stated: "To gaze
upon the countenance of Sheikhs
should be regarded as a blessing.
For if you miss the chance to behold
them, there is no restitution. lt is not
something easily obtained. You can
repeat the prayer (wakfa) on Arafat

their faces. lt is not possible to find it
again once you have lost it:'1
Fakhruddin lraqi (d. 688/1289) was
among the Sufis who participated in
the discourse circle of Sadr al-Din al
Qunawi (d. 673/1274). In this circle,
there would be regular discussions
of significant Sufi topics, recitation
of Fusus al Hikam and elucidation on
the Diwan of lbn Farid (d. 632/1234).
lt was in this circle that lraqi, inspired
by the richness of this environment,
authored his work Divine Flashes:ı
When the book was presented to ai
Qunawi, he praised it by remarking
that it w as al most the essen ce of Fusus

Later on this situation becomes important in the decisions taken by the two main brancb~s (Bayramiyye-i Şemsiyye and Melamiyye-i Bayramiyye) in the order. Tbere are accounts that purport that Hacı Bayram, with the impact of the Melami movement, was more inclined towards the covert remembrance, while other accounts, including one in the Risaletün-Nuriyye by Akşemseddin, suggests that Bayramis would come together in circles and do remembrance in a lo~d voice. For an assessment of these accounts, see AbdUibdki Gölpınar lı, "Bayramiye" İA, v. D, p. 424-426. Unfortunately, the spiritual path that

In sh ort, in the ca se ofboth Bedreddins
among the successors of Hacı Bayram,
we do not have conclusive and
precise knowledge about either the
place and time of the ir birth or death 1
or their identities. However, if we are
to summarize the points upon which
the classkal sources all agree, we can
lay out the following facts: First and
fo re most, both Bedreddins cam e from
the land of Acam with Ebu Hamid and
completed their spiritual journeys by
participating in t~e conversations and
communes of Hacı Bayram, and that
the re are quite a number of de~vishes

look at the situation In terms of the
internal history of the science of
Sufism, the re is ample knowledge that
they were o nce a part of the company
of Hacı Bayra~. That is, to explain it
in Sufi values, we must say that both
Sufis were "glazed" in secrets of their
own.
The question arises: Which successor
of Hacı Bayram was the one who
participated in the recital and study
of Divine Flashes - the topic of this

are unable to find an answer to
this question in any contemporary
source close to that period. As far as
we can teli, we are first made aware
of the existence of the translation of

MehmetTahir of Bursa (d. 1344/1925):
"Bedreddin Efendi, one of his exalted

of it remains in the Cami-i Kebir

of information is also found in a
biography of Hacı Bayram-ı Veli by
Mehmet Ali Ay.ni (d. 1364/1945):
"[ ... ] No meaningless words were

of these valuable gatherings, the Pir

case we cannot help highlighting the
fact that both Bedreddin the Slim's

books in fact should be considered
equally as important as the original
texts themselves, we gather. One will
absolutely be able to realize this very
fact if one examines Ahmed Bican's

that "this book is a translation;127 his
work is in fact almost a compilation
of commentaries. Because Bedreddin
the Slim-like his two friends from the
Order-is not an ordinary translator,
simply doing a mot-a-mot translation.
Therefore undoubtedly he had a
rhetoric unique to him, and we can
list these as follows:
1. The text is not literally translated
word by word. As the sufistic
çoncept is given priority, the text is
translated accordingly in order to
ensure that the reader ·has an in
depth understanding. If scrutinized
this gives us the clues to thoroughly
understanding the implied meaning
ba~~tage and hence Bedreddin the
Slim's contribution to the text and the
way he structured the book. This also
. helps us see the author's connection
with Sufism Theory. For example,
oased on his understanding from its
original Persian text, m:zs he translated
the related seetion as follows: "The
Sultan of love wished to build his
royal pavilion in the existence desert,
open the Gate of the treasures of
Divine Names and Attributes, endow
the Eternal Blessings to the universe,

makes himself clearly visible without ~

true thanks to his uninterrupted
generosity:'29 Whereas what we can
only find when it is translated literally
is: "The Sultan of love wanted to
erect his tent in the desert, made his
treasures accessible, and distributed
his gems to the world:'30
2. After writing the original Arabic
of the Qur'an verses and hadiths of
the Holy Prophet, their meanings
and translations are also given. He
carried on the same rhetoric when
he translated some great sufis' Arabic
and Persian sayings into Turkish as
he intended for those invaluable
messages to become widespread
among truth-seekers.31
3. The Ara b i c and Persian _ poems
found in the work were only present
as translations, without the originals.
However the following couplet of

most recited poems among the Sufis
is an exception to this. According to

sense, Love is the essence of Divine
F/ashes. According to Sufis, Love is a
maxim that has to dowith theology,
cosmögony, metaphysics, cosmology,
and psychology as well as being a
cosmic matter.35 Therefore whatever
is related to Love, it is bound to be
within Divine Flashes. To sum up,
the truth of "The Universe wrapped
itself up in Love" pronounced by Hacı
Bayram-ı Veli is all-inclusively the
theme of this book. So in ~xplaining

word of "Love" in this couplet in line
with the "wahdat al-wujud" concept
of lbn ai-Arabi (d. 638/1240) it takes
the shape of "The Universe wrapped
itself up in Absolute Existence" which
in fact means what lraki exactly
tried to do in Divine Flashes more
specifically to clarify sornewhat all
the ranks and degrees of Love, which
is about all creatures coming into

identical points ofview: whilst Love in

it is alsa one of the attributes of the
Creator as well. At the end of the
day, both senses represent the very
meaning adopted by lbn al-Arabi and
his followers.37

the translator deals with the Sufistic

to Sufis this is the proximity between
Gad and his servants. As the Holy
Prophet is quoted in a hadith qudsi,
"If my servant approaches me one i nch

understanding of this state is that it
is reciprocal. In technical Sufi terms,
proximity is divided into"kurb-i feraiz"
and "kurb-i nevafil': God's being the
driving instrument of his servants
with His attributes of certainty is
called "kurb-i nevafil" whilst the
servants being His instruments by

the Love originating from the wish

IV. CONCLUSION \
Divine Flashes is one of the faremost
classical sufistic works in )\natolia
originally written in Persian and
translated into Turkish afterwards.
There are numerous copies of the
manuscripts of both the original
text and its translation by Bedreddin
the Slim. As far as we could find
out there are over twenty copies
of the translation. This number
is an important indicator of how
widespread it is and its impact on sufi
philosophy in the following centuries.

showing us the connection between
Hacı Bayram and the Bayrami qrder
and lbn al-Arabi and his School. The
prominent concepts of vücOd, a'yan-ı
sabite, istidad, kabiliyet, kurb-ı feraiz,
kurb-ı nevafil, fakr, fena and vuslat in
lbn al-Arabi Sufism constituted main
topics at the discourse gatherings of
Hacı Bayram and have been penned
by his disciple Bedreddin The Slim.
Thus, the Bayrami Order has adopted
the vahdet al-vücOd philosopj:ıy si nce
its very beginning accordingly as is
particularlypointedoutbyGölpınarlı.53
As we said in the preceding pages
Bedreddin Efendi's this work is a
concise commentary rather than a
word by word translation, that is a
compilation. So we can easily gather
it was one of the earliest manuscripts
penned by Bayrami scribes.
Furthermore, the possibility that this
text might well have been generated
from the-notes taken by some khalif
of Hacı Bayram during the speeches
made by this Great Sheik about what
the Divine F/ashes is about should
be noted. We are of the opinion
that there is no drawback in reading
the translation of Divine Flashes as
though it actually belongs to Hacı
