DESCRIPTION

28 years ago Maestro DeRenzi programmed a run of Rigoletto for what would become the first stop in the long journey through all of Verdi’s works. This winter, Sarasota Opera will shout “Viva Verdi” prouder than ever, proving that we are indeed Verdi’s American Home. The Verdi Cycle Grand Finale Season will be dedicated exclusively to the music of the Italian master as well as music by composers he admired all his life. Mozart and Beethoven are on that list. As we enjoy the lightness and mayhem of Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte and the brilliance of Beethoven’s craftsmanship in Fidelio, we’ll also learn more about Verdi. The final week of the 2016 Winter Season will be a dedicated Verdi Festival week. In addition to the new productions of Aida and The Battle of Legnano, Sarasota Opera will present two concerts of his music, an international Verdi conference, a retrospective exhibit that looks back on the 28 years of the Verdi Cycle as well as many other special events.

In 1989 Sarasota Opera began The Verdi Cycle—a unique undertaking to perform the complete works of Giuseppe Verdi. The 2016 Winter Opera

Festival will mark the grand finale of this extraordinary journey with new productions of Aida and The Battle of Legnano, with a final week

devoted exclusively to the Italian master, including two concerts of his music, talks, panel discussions, and other special events. The completion of the Cycle will make Sarasota Opera the only company in the world to

have performed all of Verdi’s music!

As we make history right here in the heart of downtown Sarasota, where will you be?

Radamès is an ambitious Egyptian warrior who thinks only of two things—leading his country’s legions against the Ethiopians, and his undying love for the slave Aida. But his feelings for Aida crush the hopes of the King’s daughter Amneris, leading him and his beloved onto a path of betrayal, revenge, and tragedy. In a grand spectacle of vocal prowess, choruses, ballet, sumptuous scenery and luxurious costumes, experience Verdi’s beloved tale of a heartbreaking love triangle, on the Sarasota Opera stage for the first time.

“Così fan tutte” literally means “all women do this.” Ferrando and Guglielmo believe that their respective fiancées will be eternally faithful, but the philosopher Don Alfonso isn’t so sure. To show him that they are right, the two soldiers pull a prank on their brides-to-be, putting their faithfulness to the test. Mozart’s enthralling comedy and masterful score will lighten your heart and make for an evening of great fun.

In a Spanish prison, the corrupt Pizarro unjustly imprisoned Florestan—a nobleman who attempted to expose the villain’s crimes. Florestan’s loving wife, Leonore, infiltrates the prison by disguising herself as a young man, Fidelio, to save her beloved from certain death. Beethoven’s only opera is an ode to the virtues of love, perseverance, heroism, and justice.
