PROVIDING RELIEF FOR NECK AND BACK PAINJOHN B. JACQUEMIN, M.D.

REGAINING NORMAL MOVEMENT and strength after surgery is a process that begins with physi-

cal therapy. Following surgery, patients may be hampered by pain, swelling, and stiffness. Therapy guides them back to normal activity without damaging the surgically repaired area. It’s an essential step in the recovery period.

Chris Hill, OrthoCincy Physical Therapy Director in Ohio, says thera-pists at OrthoCincy work in concert with a patient’s surgeon to coordinate the best program for recovery and a return to daily routines after surgery.

“Each surgery is different, so individu-alized treatment is important,” says Hill.

“Because our therapists are in close com-munication with our surgeons, we make sure the treatment is specific to each patient’s needs.”

Therapy accomplishes several goals after surgery: regaining muscle and joint strength, balance, and function; safely re-learning how to use the joint again; reducing pain from stiffness and swell-ing; and preventing re-injury of the af-fected area.

“Therapy directs a patient’s recovery at every stage,” he says. “It optimizes the benefits of surgery and allows for the fullest recovery possible.”

Skipping therapy or waiting too long after surgery to pursue therapy can have detrimental results, Hill warns. “Com-pleting all of your physical therapy will help you reach your goals and reach an optimal level of activity—it’s an important part of your recovery,” Hill says.

Chris Hill, PT, MHS, OCS, is Director of Physi-cal Therapy in Ohio. He sees patients at the Montgomery location.

THE NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF Health estimates that 80 percent of Americans will suffer from low

back pain at some point in their lives. With at least a half dozen providers dedicated to helping patients with back and neck pain, OrthoCincy offers some of the most comprehensive treatment options in the area to ease the discom-fort of spinal issues.

John B. Jacquemin, M.D., a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon who spe-cializes in treating spines, says patients seeking treatment at OrthoCincy receive a menu of services, from initial exam to treatment with medication—whether oral or by injection—to physical therapy or chiropractic services. If none of these options relieves the pain, a surgical solu-tion may be explored.

“The vast majority of patients get better without ever needing surgery,” Jacque-min says. “Only about one in 14 new patients we see will require surgery. We treat everyone, regardless of whether or not surgery is the answer to their back or neck pain.”

Due to the complexity of the muscular-skeletal system, back and neck issues can be part of other health problems that the patient may not be aware of, Jacquemin says.

“Many people think they have neck

pain, but what they really have is a bad shoulder or carpal tunnel syndrome,” he says. “We can refer them to the right spe-cialist to solve their particular problem.”

With more than a decade of experi-ence in spinal surgery, Jacquemin has seen firsthand how wear and tear leads to degenerative conditions and back pain for so many people.

“Today we have much higher expecta-tions of our activity level than previous generations did,” he says. “People want an active lifestyle well into old age. Luckily, treatments have improved drastically, so patients have more choices in staying mobile. For example, just in the last five years we’ve been able to replace disks in the neck for problems like herniated disks or arthritis. This offers a high success rate, and patients can return to a pain-free lifestyle.”

Suffering from back pain need not slow down an active lifestyle, Jacquemin adds. OrthoCincy offers abundant options to treat and manage the problem so patients can go back to their daily routines without being hampered by pain.

John B. Jacquemin, M.D., is a board-certified spine surgeon spe-cializing in cervical, thoracic, and lumbar surgery. He sees patients

in the Florence office.

BREAKTHROUGHS IN THE TREATMENT OF CHARCOT FOOT DISEASEVINCENT J. SAMMARCO, M.D.

INNOVATIVE CUSTOM KNEE REPLACEMENTMICHAEL SWANK, M.D.

ORTHOCINCY PHYSICIAN VINCENT J. Sammarco, M.D., has pioneered a breakthrough in the surgical

treatment of Charcot Foot Disease that could result in dramatic increases in limb salvage for patients with foot defor-mities after suffering from neuropathy (loss of feeling).

The Axis Charcot Fixation System offers improvements in treatment and outcomes for those suffering from loss of foot function due to neuropathy from conditions such as diabetes or fractures of the foot or ankle, says Dr. Sammarco, a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon with OrthoCincy and an expert in the treatment of Charcot Foot Disease.

Those afflicted with Charcot Foot may lose the ability to wear standard shoes as the disease affects the shape of their feet. Loss of normal bone structure can result in “rocker bottom foot,” where the arch of the foot collapses and sometimes even reverses.

Dr. Sammarco led research to develop

the Axis device to help Charcot Foot pa-tients retain their limbs. The Axis implant offers innovative technology to reshape the foot and hold it in place as the bones heal to create a more natural foot func-tion. “The technology made available in the Axis system is truly unique and rep-resents a big step forward in our ability to treat patients who need surgery for this condition,” Dr. Sammarco says.

Developed specifically to treat the unique problems associated with Charcot Disease, the patented Axis implant is stronger and more durable than anything previously available to patients with this debilitating condition. This means patients can expect better outcomes and fewer follow-up treat-ments or surgeries due to implant failure. OrthoCincy is the only orthopaedic prac-tice in the Greater Cincinnati area to offer this new procedure and device.

“This is a breakthrough for preventing amputations and restoring patients to functionality,” says Dr. Sammarco, who

lectures internationally on the condition. “We’ve had very high success rates with this treatment.”

Vincent J. Sammarco, M.D., is a board-certified foot and ankle and general orthopaedic surgeon. He sees patients in the Montgomery,

Fairfield, and Ft. Wright offices.

JUST AS AN OFF-THE-RACK SHIRT will never fit the same way on any two people, one standard replace-

ment knee joint won’t fit two patients’ knees in exactly the same way, either. OrthoCincy surgeon Michael Swank, M.D.,

has helped to solve this problem by devel-oping custom joint replacement surgery that can help patients recover faster and go back to regular activities sooner after a total knee replacement.

As President and Medical Director of the Cincinnati Orthopaedic Research Institute, Director of Research for Joint Restoration and Reconstruction for the Lindner Center at The Christ Hospital, and a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon, Swank is actively involved in research to ease the discomfort and speed up the recovery of joint replacement for patients who need surgical solutions to knee pain. His work has helped pioneer the first custom-made artificial joints to be offered worldwide.

“The better the fit, the more normal it will feel, and the more normal the patient will feel after surgery,” says Swank, who leads numerous clinical trials each year to evaluate innovations in joint replace-ment. “There is evidence that these joints perform more like normal knees than stan-dard joint replacements.”

Although each custom knee replace-ment joint is made specifically to fit an individual patient, Swank says there is little difference in cost or insurance coverage. Patients undergo CT imaging prior to the surgery to take measurements for the new joint. Then it takes about six weeks to make the custom joint, a process the patient can follow via the Internet. Once it’s complete, surgery is scheduled, and the patient can begin the process of recovery.

Swank says he has seen excellent results after completing roughly 700 custom knee replacements during the past six years.

“My findings have been overwhelmingly positive,” he says. “The patient has greater range of motion and recovery time is im-proved. I think demand for this type of joint replacement is going to grow in the future.”

Michael L. Swank, M.D., is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon spe-cializing in total knee and total hip replacement. He sees patients in

the Montgomery and Ft. Wright offices.
