Dear Friends,

2018 was an amazing first year for SoCal K9 Foundation! We could not have asked for a better way to launch our mission.

Once we received our tax exempt approval, we knew it was go time. This report provides an overview of our accomplishments in 2018. From the events we have attended, to all the great people and organizations we have met, to having honorably assisted a few K9 heroes. The feeling is indescribable.

On behalf of the Board of Directors and myself we cannot Thank You enough for a memorable year. We welcome 2019 with much excitement and looking forward to working TOGETHER with you as we grow.

Best Regards,

Abby Cruz

“Most of us want to help those less fortunate. SoCal K9 Foundation is doing their share by filling a gap for law enforcement K9s as there is nearly no support once these four leggeed heroes retire.

As a volunteer for this organization, I believe my role - although small-is helping their sense of purpose. SoCal K9 Foundation is new and not even a year old, but their impact has taken shape as they have cultivated connections with volunteers, the community, law enforcement units, and over 450 social media followers. Volunteering for SoCal K9 Foundation provides me the opportunity to assist by helping build their brand identityh through social media and engaging readers through Instagram, Facebook, and email. I work closely with the Executive Director and Chairman who are both very humble, very accessible and very smart entrepreneurs. Their personality and leadership has a direct impact on the organization’s culture and is one of the reason I love to volunteer at SoCal K9 Foundation.”-J. Cuizon

IMPACT OF YOUR DONATION: YOU made it possible for us to provide financial relief in time of need.

K9 Zeus was a 9 year old Belgian Malinois. He and his handler worked together

for 4.5 years at the Chula Vista Police Department. K9 Zeus made multiple contact apprehensions over his career, including a homicide suspect. He retired from the department in January 2018 and was fortunate to remain with his partner.

K9 Zeus was diagnosed with a bad thyroid 2 years prior and began experiencing medical issues. His handler reached out to us for assistance. We were able to work with Judy Veterinary Clinic and arrange medical exams for K9 Zeus to undergo at a reduced rate but time was not on our side. K9 Zeus had passed away.

We were able to offer to take care of the necessary exams because of YOUR donations. Medical bills are one of the biggest financial burdens incurred.

Meet K9 Iras a 5 year old female German Shorthaired Pointer. She and her handler served as an explosives detection K9 team for the National Explosives Detection K9 Team Program from October 2014 through 2018. In early 2018, K9 Iras’ handler was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The family’s request of retiring K9 Iras to them was granted to watch over, comfort and protect them through this difficult time.

With K9 Iras retiring young & healthy, her family will incur typical pet expenses until her death in addition to the medical expenses already incurred as a result of her handler’s medical condition.

SoCal K9 Foundation was able to provide K9 Iras’ family with funds to use for her daily living n hopes to alleviate some of the financial burden that they will acquire.

In memory of K9 RedK9 Red worked for the Sheriff’s Department for approximately 6 years. He specialized in narcotics detection and handler protection. In 2015 his handler was unable to continue in the unit or care for Red. Fortunately enough, a former handler had volunteered to bring K9 Red into his home.

K9 Red recently became sick and stopped eating. After a 2.5 hour veterinarian visit he went into emergency surgery for a possible blockage. As the procedure got underway doctors immediately discovered numerous cancerous tumors throughout his abdomen. After speaking with the doctors, the family felt the most humane thing to do was to have Red euthanized.

This was the third surgery Red underwent since retiring from the department.

Reaching out to us for any financial support we could give, SoCal K9 Foundation in conjunction with San Diego County Canine Association shared the costs of K9 Red’s final procedure.
