YAHRZEIT MEMORIAL SHABBAT
WITH PROFESSOR AVINOAM PATT
Shabbat, September 20th
After having much success with a Shabbat Yahrzeit Lecture
a few years ago, we are trying it again! As we approach the 23rd Annual Yahrzeit
Memorial Lecture instead of just one lecture we will have a whole Shabbat devoted to themes of memory. What an amazing way to remember
loved ones and inspire us before the onset of the Yamim Noraim Season.
Professor Avinoam J. Patt is the Philip D. Feltman Professor of Modern Jewish
History at the Maurice Greenberg Center for Judaic
Studies at the University of Hartford, where he is also
director of the Museum of Jewish Civilization.
Previously, he worked as the Miles Lerman Applied Re-
search Scholar for Jewish Life and Culture at the Center
for Advanced Holocaust Studies of the United States
Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM).
He received his Ph.D. in Modern European History and
Hebrew and Judaic Studies from New York Universi-
ty. His first book, Finding Home and Homeland: Jewish
Youth and Zionism in the Aftermath of the Holocaust
(published by Wayne State University Press, May 2009)
examines the appeal of Zionism for young survivors in
Europe in the aftermath of the Holocaust and their role
in the creation of the state of Israel. He is also the co-
editor (with Michael Berkowitz) of a collected volume on
Jewish Displaced Persons, titled We are Here: New Ap-
proaches to the Study of Jewish Displaced Persons in
Postwar Germany (Wayne State University Press, Feb-
ruary 2010). He has also published numerous articles,
book chapters, and encyclopedia articles on various top-
ics related to Jewish life and culture before, during, and
after the Holocaust.

MANDATORY SCRIP PROGRAM
The MANDATORY SCRIP PROGRAM began on July 1, 2014. Each family will be expected to bring in an ex-tra $100 of income to the shul by buying gift cards through this program. This is how it works: With every purchase you make using Scrip or “Shop with Scrip” a percentage comes directly to the shul. These contributions range from 2% to as much as 16% of the amount of your purchase. It is now the job of every member to generate a minimum of $100 worth of in-come from any assortment of purchases. You can do this in a number of ways—some examples: Purchase ~ 2 grocery cards per month. (Big Y,
ShopRite or Stop and Shop) Purchase reloadable cards for such items as cloth-
ing, gas, drugstores or coffee. Buy them once and reload. (Whole Foods & Crown Market offer this option)
Purchase wedding gifts or Chanukah gifts by buy-ing gift cards
Use “Scrip Now” for some of your clothing, house-hold, or gift purchases
This truly is SO simple and a WIN-WIN opportunity. By making your regular purchases, you are financial-ly supporting YIWH. Daniella Robinson is the Coor-dinator of the Scrip Program. Your scrip earnings are individually tabulated through her scrip system. She can be reached at: (860)578-9515 or at [email protected]. Please feel free to be in contact with Daniella should you have any questions. Also, Feel free to call or email to arrange a pick up. Or she will be happy to deliver your cards to you!

The Heresy of Hubris
Rabbi Mayer Twersky
So that his heart does not become haughty over his brethren and not turn from the commandment right or left so that he will prolong years over his kingdom, he and his sons amid Israel (Devarim 17:20)
The Torah alludes here to the prohibition of haughtiness because Scripture enjoins the king from haughtiness and conceit, and a fortiori others who have no case [for haughti-ness] ... because haughtiness is repugnant and loathsome to G-d ... because greatness and exaltedness belong exclusively to Hashem (Ramban, ad loc.)
Rabbi Moshe of Covey authored the SeMaG, which enumerates and explains the six hundred and thirteen mitzvos. In a most stunning, remarkable passage he writes that upon completion of his oeuvre, he beheld a vision in a dream. He was told that "Behold, you have forgotten the foundationalmitzvah not to forget Hashem and become haughty." According-ly, he revised his work and featured the prohibition of haughtiness as mitzvas lo ta'aseh #64. Rabbi Moshe Cordevero in his Tomar Devorah [chapter 2] characterizes humility, the obvious antithesis of haughtiness, as the key to all correct midos. We certainly intuit that ga'avah is a deplorable mida. But a modicum of reflection and pre-cise definition of terms are necessary to understand why it is so deplorable and why its an-tithesis, anavah, is so crucial. A ba'al ga'avah is not necessarily one who exaggerates his abilities and accomplish-ments. Such a person is, in the words of my teacher Rav Gershon Zaks z"l, out of touch with reality! The ba'al ga'avah can be entirely accurate in his assessment of his abilities and ac-complishments. He errs in feeling that "My strength and the might of my hand" (Devarim 8:17) are responsible for his abilities and accomplishments. The ba'al ga'avah feels independent and autonomous , and hence boastful and proud. An anav, by contrast, while appreciating the religious mandate for human effort and initia-tive, understands that Hashem has endowed him with whatever abilities he possesses, sus-tains him, provides him with opportunities and crowns his efforts with success. The anav can also be entirely accurate in his assessment of his abilities and accomplish-ments, but he recognizes his absolute dependence and all-encompassing indebtedness to Hashem. Accordingly, he is modest and unassuming. With these definitions in mind we understand the emphasis upon anavah of the SeMaG and Rabbi Moshe Cordovero. The religious, theological need for humility and the heresy of hubris are codified in very stark terms by the Rambam (Hilchos De'os 2:3) "One who is haughty denies Hashem." Rambam establishes a rigorous equation between hubris and heresy. He is not merely guilty of something tantamount to heresy, but something which is heresy. Rambam quotes the same verse as the SeMaG. "And your heart will be-come haughty and you will forget Hashem, your God" (Devarim8:14). Haughtiness, by defi-nition, entails forgetting Hashem. One who is haughty feels independent and autonomous; this is a denial of Hashem, who is the source of our existence and sustains us.
