T he Palos Verdes community came together on June 9th and 10th in that once a year, unique event – The Palos Verdes Street Fair & Music Festival. Over 40,000 residents and visitors (traveling from as far away as Temecula, Pasadena and the Valley), enjoyed two days of perfect Palos Verdes weather, hospitality and fun. The kids’ screams of delight at the jam-packed carnival reminded the crowd that summer is here! With over 200 hand-selected vendors showcasing artisan crafts, local nonprofit organizations, and commercial exhibitors, there was truly something for everyone to enjoy. Two diverse food courts, a flight simulator, continuous live entertainment on two stages, a light-hearted dog show, pet adoptions, food cook-offs and competitions, a community stage, The Princess Bride movie screening and a free petting zoo and pony rides for the children rounded out the weekend. The new Edison International Community Plaza would like to congratulate the competitors and the winners of our first ever food competitions. You are awesome! We have great ideas for next year and welcome your feedback. Besides being a ton of fun, the Street Fair gives back to the community in several ways. Starting with Friday’s Teen Night at the Carnival, the Chamber of Commerce will donate over $1000 in pre-sale proceeds from the evening to the PVPUSD. In addition, the Chamber’s Young Professionals collected more than $500 for their featured charity, H.E.L.P., all while cheerfully volunteering at the Beer & Wine tent. A portion of the proceeds from the 8th Annual Natural Balance Pet Foods Top Dogs Show presented by Subaru Pacific registrations were donated by the Chamber to Animal Rescue. We are still waiting for final numbers to come in from our animal rescue and adoption groups, but many very happy families adopted pets on Saturday and Sunday. And, in the very generous spirit of giving that is characteristic of the Palos Verdes community, over 60 pints of blood were donated at the Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance bloodmobile during the Fair weekend. This fabulous event would not be possible without the support of the Chamber’s many Street Fair sponsors, especially the presenting sponsor for the Fair, Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance. The Chamber of Commerce would like to recognize and thank all of our sponsors, volunteers and the entire community for being a part of this unique celebration right in the heart of the peninsula! Be sure to tag us in your Palos Verdes Street Fair & Music Festival photos and look for more on www. gotbaddog.com. Plans are already underway for next year’s 26th Annual Street Fair, to be held June, 2013. Contact the Chamber office to be a part of what promises to be another truly spectacular event! The Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce proudly

received a Certificate of Recognition from California State Senator Roderick D. Wright in honor of the 25th

Annual Palos Verdes Street Fair & Music Festival. Senator Wright recognized the Chamber’s “dedication, exemplary service and tireless efforts to make the Peninsula a great

place to live, work and play.” He went on to congratulate and thank the Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber for their commitment to the well being of our community.

PV Young Professionals Name H.E.L.P.2012 Featured Charity

Palos Verdes Young Professionals (PVYP) announced that they have

selected H.E.L.P. (Healthcare and Elder Law Programs Corporation) as their 2nd annual featured charity. H.E.L.P. will have the benefit of the fundraising dollars and volunteer time of PVYP. H.E.L.P. was chosen from a pool of Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce nonprofit members who were asked to apply for the coveted attention of PVYP. “We received so many applications from wonderful non-profit organizations. it was hard to choose just one,” says Melissa Griswold, Co-chair of PVYP and marketing Director for Griswold & Griswold Insurance Agency, Inc.. “H.E.L.P. had specific needs and could use our help for both monetary and hands-on assistance.” Upon learning of their selection Britt Huff, H.E.L.P. Executive Director, said, “We are so pleased to be chosen as the PVYP featured nonprofit of the year. They are a dynamic, enthusiastic young group that will be very fun to work with. We especially appreciated their

offer of support for our annual fundraiser, “A Royal Affaire,” on June 22 at Trump Golf Club. Their support helped to make our event a big success.” H.E.L.P.’s education and counseling programs focus on elder care options, legal and financial planning tools, and consumer protections. Their highly qualified program staff provides objective, accurate and up-to-date assistance, information and referrals to community, nonprofit and government resources. H.E.L.P. benefits from the assistance of retired professionals who volunteer their time and expertise to help others in the community. Their volunteer attorney is available for free and low-cost in-office consultations twice a month on Friday afternoons. PV Young Professionals will dedicate the year of 2012 to H.E.L.P. and will raise funds with various activities including promotion at their monthly networking socials and by manning the beer and wine booth at the 25th Annual Palos Verdes Street Fair & Music Festival. “Our goal is not only to raise awareness of H.E.L.P.’s contributions to

our community, but to acquire enough donated funds to purchase a new photocopier for their office,” says Kim Sutton, Co-Chair of PVYP and Manager of Malaga Bank’s Torrance Branch, “Our entire committee and membership is taking the task to heart.” Palos Verdes Young Professionals (PVYP) is a Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce networking group. Business-minded young, professional men and women working on the Palos Verdes Peninsula hold mixers and events to unite the future of business on “The Hill”. Learn more at www.pvyp.org. H.E.L.P. (Healthcare and Elder Law Programs Corporation) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to empowering older adults and their families by providing impartial information, education and counseling on elder care, law, finances and consumer protection so they may lead lives with security and dignity. H.E.L.P. is located at 1404 Cravens Ave. in Torrance; (310) 533-1996. Learn more at help4srs.com.

The Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, in

partnership with eight surrounding Chambers and cities, participated in the 37th Annual Medal of Valor Awards luncheon in May. Over 500

attendees filled the ballroom at the Torrance Marriott to honor the exemplary service and heroism of South Bay police officers and firefighters. “The Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce is proud to be a

part of the Medal of Valor tradition,” said Eileen Hupp, Chamber President / CEO. “Our local businesses are honored to recognize the police and fire departments for their service to the community.”

The Appetizer Restaurant has been selected by

Assemblymember Bonnie Lowenthal as the “54th Assembly District Business of the Month”. Nominated by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, The Appetizer was recognized for its long-standing and dedicated support of our schools and local youth sports programs. Alfonso Artiano left the Island of Ischia (near Capri and Naples) in 1955 to join his father in San Pedro. After working in the restaurant business for several years, his

dream of opening his own restaurant was realized when he opened the first Appetizer on Deep Valley Drive in 1972 and later, in 1976, when he opened the second Appetizer in the Hughes Market on Hawthorne Blvd. When The Appetizer first opened many of the customers were youngsters who stopped by after visiting the library. Those young people (now many with children of their own), their parents and friends still return for the well-prepared, tasty dishes served seven days a week; word of mouth and customer satisfaction have made The

Appetizer what it is today. Be sure to stop into the Appetizer and say hello at 700 Deep Valley Drive in Rolling Hills Estates or call for take-out and catering at 310-541-1411. Celebrating its 40th Anniversary this year as a family-owned and operated business, The Appetizer clearly demonstrates how important small business is to our local economy and the well-being of our community. Pictured above are John, Alfonso and Antonio, the family faces behind our beloved Appetizer.
