ANZAC Day—We Will Remember Them…

ANZAC Day, 25th April, a day to remember those who have and who continue to fight

for freedom and peace. Anzac Day now goes far beyond the anniversary of the landing

on Gallipoli in 1915. It is the day on which we remember all Australians who served and

died in war and on operational service. The spirit of Anzac, with its qualities of courage,

mateship, and sacrifice, continues to have meaning and relevance for our sense of

national identity. It is a time to reflect on the wonderful country that we live in, to be

grateful for the boundless opportunities we have as a nation as a direct result of those

who fought for our freedom.

As a school we are proud to be part of the Ardlethan Community ANZAC Service. Our

staff and students march proudly, our captains lead the service proudly and we love

taking the time to visit the soldiers grave and reflect on the sacrifices they have made

for us.

Thank you to all those involved in this wonderful commemoration, to Lee Jackson for

his organisation and to Sarah Carnie and Jayson Scarlett for the dignity and respect

they displayed leading the service. To our students, Amy, Leila and Hannah for their

singing and to all students and staff who were able to proudly represent our school at

the service.

Year 9 and 10 Excursion to Lake Cowal

On Wednesday 5th April, Year 9 and 10 visited the Lake Cowal Conservation Centre to undertake some Science and Geography related fieldwork. The students also took a tour of the mine site. Students were able to gain an understanding of the types of job options, safety requirements, training required and the money involved in mining operations.

The Conservation Centre provided lunch for a million flies and us on the foreshore of Lake Cowal in front of the former Lake Cowal Homestead. Once there, a former Ardlethan Central School teacher, Sally Russell, lead the students through a series of fieldwork activities, which culminated in analysing the water for water bugs.

Many thanks to Sally Russell and Lake Cowal Conservation Centre and Evolution Cowal

Gold Operations for our visit.

In Term 1 students in K/1/2 were learning about families and cultures. This involved students comparing

family types, sizes, histories and the cultural similarities and differences between families.

As part of this unit Julie Jardine came in to the school to discuss their family heritage and culture. She

talked to the students about their traditional lifestyle, showed photos and brought in a large range of

cultural items including hand made jewellery, instruments and art.

The students had a wonderful time learning about South American culture through listening to stories

passed down through generations, playing with the steel pan and rainmaker instruments and asking a

range of interesting questions.

Thank you very much to Julie Jardine for coming into the K/1/2 classroom to share your wealth of

knowledge of South American culture with us. I know that all the students in K/1/2 learnt a lot that day

and are very appreciative to you for sharing it with us.

Round 1 Netball Reports Jets v Barellan

Under 11’s Teal The Northern Jets Under 11s Teal team were all very keen to play their first game for the Jets. We had a close game against Barellan with all the girls playing well. The players player delta towel award was won by Sophie Dart playing a great game at GD then moving to C & GA. The $10 Ariah Park Bowling Club award was won by Maya Prentice who had a great game continually going for the ball. Georgia (Maxi) Maxwell won the $5 Beckom Hotel Canteen Award and had a fabulous game moving well around the court and getting into space. Final score – Northern Jets 2 to Barellan 9.

Under 11’s White We had a great win to start the season defeating Barellan 29-2. All the girls in this team played together last year which showed in the game as the girls moved the ball down the court easily and passes were strong and accurate. They have improved in reading the play as well. We look forward to a few wins this season. Awards this week: $10 Bowling Club award went to Sophie Maxwell who had an out-standing game, she was consistent from start to finish. $5 Beckom Hotel canteen award went to Charlotte Bell who played a great game and shot lots of goals and the Delta towel went to Tully Gaynor who got the ball down the court consistently. We are looking forward to playing Temora next Friday night.

Under 13’s The U13’s netball team made a great start to the 2017 season with a strong performance all round, defeating Barellan 35-9. Right from the starting whistle the girls played confidently and with determina-tion maintain a strong position throughout the whole game. The girls made a concentrated effort during attack, making strong and thoughtful passes amongst team members, and their defenders were tireless in their efforts. All girls played a strong game and listened attentively to their coach, eager to learn and improve their game at all times. Awards went to: Louise O’Hare - $10 A.P Bowling club, Em-ma Morris—$5 Beckom Hotel canteen Award and Darcie Manning the Delta towel. Under 15’s Our first game for the season was played in fine conditions after a cooler start to the day. With a largely unchanged team, we wel-comed Josie Gaynor and Abbey Doyle into the Under 15’s team. From the first whistle the Jets exploded off the mark with a quick goal scored to settle the nerves. A strong first quarter saw Jets lead 19 to 2 due to the remarkably slick and consistent play by each play-er. In the second quarter Barellan found their feet and began to capitalise on their scoring opportunities, however the accuracy of Abbey Doyle and Lily Walker in the goal circle ensured another strong quarter and our lead was extended to 28 – 8 at the half time break. Though we had a lull in the third quarter which was likely caused by the clouds clearing and the weather heating up, wecontin-ued our control through the centre with strong play by Katie Doyle, Josie Gaynor and Olivia Harper retaining control over the ball and ensuring our shooters were able to maintain our healthy lead. Hayley Buerckner consistently dominated in defence and turned the ball over at key moments and was well supported by Hannah O’Dwyer. Though Barellan had continued to improve their attack it was not enough to stop our momentum and we held a 38 – 14 lead coming into the last quarter. The final quarter of the game was more evenly matched with both teams only scoring 5 goals. Pocket rocket Erin Brown continued to read the play well in WA and provided strong support through the centre court, pairing well with Olivia and Katie. The final score was 43 – 19. All players were consistent and put in a tremendous effort to win the game. Katie Doyle was the Player’s Player ($10 A.P Bowling Club), Josie Gaynor won the Beckom Hotel $5 Canteen Award and Hayley Buerckner claimed the coveted Delta Towel Award for Best on Court. Thanks must also go to Emma Doyle for umpiring.
