ABOUT3MT®
TheThreeMinuteThesis(3MT®)isauniversity-widecompetitionforgraduatestudentsinwhichparticipantspresenttheirresearchanditswiderimpactin3minutesorlesstoapanelofnon-specialistjudges.Thechallengeistopresentcomplexresearchinanengaging,accessible,andcompellingway,usingonlyonestaticslide.The3MT®competitionprovidesgraduatestudentswithanopportunitytorefineskillsthatcanbetransferredaftergraduationtodiversecareerpaths.Distillingresearchintoaclearform,withoutover-simplifying,andhighlightingthewiderimplicationsoftheresearchareimportantskillstocarryintopost-graduateemploymentandpublicservice.Thecompetitionalsoenablesstudentstoshowcasetheirresearchtoawidermultidisciplinaryaudience,withintheuniversity,andtothebroaderpublic.Thecompetitionisopentothepublic,andisadvertisedwithinthecommunity.Thisisauniqueopportunitytocommunicatetheinnovativeandsignificantresearchundertakenbygraduatestudents.The3MT®competitioninitiallywasdevelopedbytheUniversityofQueenslandin2008,withcompetitionsbyotherAustralianandNewZealanduniversitiesfollowing,culminatinginthefirstTrans-Tasmancompetitionheldin2010.3MT®alsohasspreadinternationally:fromJapantoEurope,toCanadaandtheU.S.UBCranthefirstCanadiancompetitionin2011;Queen’sandWesternheldcompetitionsin2012.In2013,16OntarioUniversitiessentrepresentativestotheinauguralOntario3MT®CompetitionatQueen’s.McMasterUniversityishostingoursixthannualcompetitioninMarch2018!
ThemainfocusofMcMaster’s3MT®isorientedaroundstudentdevelopmentandlearninghowtoeffectivelycommunicatecomplexresearchinjustthreeshortminutes.Thisuniqueopportunitywillallowstudentstoexpandtheirrangeofcommunicationskillsinadynamicandchallengingway.
ThetopeligiblepresenteratMcMasterwillattendtheOntario3MT®competitionhostedbytheYorkUniversityinApril2018.MostOntariouniversitiesareexpectedtoparticipateintheprovincialcompetition.

ELIGIBILITY
• McMasterstudentsmustberegisteredinaMasters(thesisorMRPonly)orPhDprogramatthetimeofthe3MT®competitionatMcMaster,andmusthavemadesubstantialprogressontheirresearchandanalysis.Course-basedMastersstudentsareineligible.
• PhDandMastersstudentswhohavedefended,buthavenotyetgraduated,areeligible.
• 3MT®presentationsmustrepresenttheprimaryresearchthestudentconductedinhis/hergraduateprogram.
• Presentersmustagreetobevideo-recorded,andtoallowthoserecordingstobemadepublicandpostedontheGraduateStudieswebsite.
• PresentersmusthaveregisteredusingtheonlineregistrationformrunbyReviewer,andreceivedconfirmationofaplacefromtheSchoolofGraduateStudies.
• Presentersmustbeavailabletopresent,inperson.Toadvanceinthecompetition,heatwinnersmustalsobeavailabletopresent,inperson,attheMcMasterSchoolofGraduateStudiesfinal.ThefinalwillbeheldonMarch15at1:30pm.
• TheWinnerwillbeexpectedtorepresentMcMasterattheOntario3MT®competitiononApril19,2018,YorkUniversity.
CONFIDENTIALITYANDINTELLECTUALPROPERTY
Studentsmustunderstandthatthepresentationoftheirresearchin3MT®willbepubliclyaccessible.(i.e.,inthepublicdomain.)
Thepresentationoftheresearchwillnotaffectanypre-existingrightsfollowingthecompetition,exceptasstatedbelow:
• Duetothenatureofthecompetition,wewillnotaskjudges,reviewers,staffortheaudiencetosignnon-disclosurestatements.Ifyourresearchisbeing/hasbeenconductedundercontractwithanoutsidesponsor,studentsshoulddiscusstherelatedcontractualtermsofconfidentialityandintellectualpropertywiththeirsupervisorbeforeparticipatinginthiscompetition.
• Allpublicsessionsofthecompetition,includingbutnotlimitedtooralpresentations,areopentothepublicatlarge.Anyandallofthesepublicsessionsmaybebroadcasttointerestedpersonsthroughmedia,whichmayincludetheInternet.
• Anydataorinformationdiscussedorpresentedinpublicsessionsshouldbeconsidered‘public’.Ifyourresearchincludesconfidentialorculturallysensitivematerialweadvisethatyoudiscussyourcompetitionentrywithyoursupervisor(s)beforeenteringthe3MT®.

COMPETITIONSTRUCTURE• Thecompetitionfor2018willconsistof4heatsofapproximately12competitors.• IfrequiredafifthheatwillbeaddedonMarch15at9:30am.• IneachheatthetoptwocompetitorswillgoforwardtotheSGSFinal*.• AllFinalpresentationswillberecorded.• ThetopeligiblecompetitorinthefinalwillgoontorepresentMcMasteratthe
Ontario3MT®competitiononApril19,2018,atYorkUniversity.
*Thenumberofcompetitorsmovingtothefinalwilldependonthenumberofpreliminaryheatsinthecompetition.Ifpreliminaryheatsnumberfour,twofinalistsperheatPLUStwowildcardchoiceswillmoveontotheFinal.WildcardwinnersaredeterminedbyGraduateStudiesstaff.Ifparticipantnumbersresultinfiveheats,twofinalistsfromeachpreliminaryheatwillmoveforward.Nowildcardswillbechoseninthisscenario.
JUDGINGCRITERIAEachcompetitor’spresentationwillbeassessedaccordingtothecriterialistedbelow.Pleasenotethateachcriterionisequallyweighted.
1. Comprehension:• Didthepresentationhelptheaudienceunderstandtheresearch?• Didthepresenterclearlyoutlinethenatureandaimsofresearch?• Doyouknowwhatissignificantaboutthisresearch?• Didthepresentationfollowalogicalsequence?
2. Engagement• Didtheorationmaketheaudiencewanttoknowmore?• Wasthepresentercarefulnottotrivialiseor‘dumbdown’theirresearch?• Didthepresenterconveyenthusiasmfortheirwork?• Didthepresentercaptureandmaintaintheiraudience’sattention?• WouldIliketoknowmoreaboutthespeaker’sresearch?
3. Communication• Wasthethesistopicanditssignificancecommunicatedinlanguageappropriatetoanon-specialistaudience?• Didthespeakerusesufficienteyecontactandvocalrange;maintainasteadypace,andaconfidentstance?• Didthespeakeravoidscientificjargon,explainterminologythatneededtobeused,andprovideadequatebackgroundinformationtoillustratepoints?• Didthepresenterspendtherightamountoftimeoneachelementoftheirpresentation–ordidtheyelaboratefortoolongorwererushed?• DidthePowerPointslideenhance,ratherthandetractfrom,theirpresentation–wasitclear,legibleandconcise?

RULES
• AsinglestaticPowerPointslideispermitted(noslidetransitions,animationsor'movement'ofanydescriptionareallowed),andtheslideistobepresentedfromthebeginningoftheorationandremaininviewforthedurationoftheoration.
• Noadditionalelectronicmedia(e.g.,soundandvideofiles)arepermitted.• Noadditionalprops(e.g.,costumes,musicalinstruments,laboratoryequipment)
arepermitted.• Nonotesorcuecardsarepermitted.• Presentationsarelimitedto3minutesmaximumandcompetitorsexceeding3
minutesaredisqualified.• Presentationsaretobespokeninstandardoratoryprose.(i.e.,nopoems,rapsor
songs,otherthanthosethatmaybethetargetofresearch).• Presentationsaretocommencefromthestage.• Presentationsareconsideredtohavecommencedwhenapresenterstartstheir
presentationthroughmovementorspeech.• Thedecisionoftheadjudicatingpanelisfinal.• ThecompetitionwillbeadministeredinEnglish.• McMasterUniversityhasmodeledtherulesaftertheOntarioProvincial
Competitionfor2018.ThiswasdonetoensurethewinnerswouldbeeligibletoparticipateintheProvincialCompetitionandthenationalcompetition.
PRIZESCashprizesaregiventoassistwinnersinattendingconferencesinordertopromotetheirresearchandfurthertheiracademicnetwork.
