Lee A. Learman, MD, phDWelcome letter from sAsgog President,

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of our Board of Directors I warmly welcome you to SASGOG’s 5th Annual Meeting! Our Program Chair, Maureen Farrell, MD, and the program planning committee have put together an outstanding agenda, packed with a wide range of valuable sessions and activities, along with time to network, meet old friends and make new ones at lunch and our afternoon reception.

Our morning sessions are organized around the theme, “Of Course You Can Do THAT: Promoting Comprehensive Women’s Health.” By lunch time we will emerge with an improved understanding of evidence-based approaches for teaching millennials, tips by experts on how to teach the “hard stuff” and a status report on national efforts to sustain women’s access to comprehensive healthcare. Dr. Barbara Levy, ACOG VP for Health Policy, will be giving the keynote address. Dr. Levy works in the trenches with other ACOG leaders to move the policy needle in the right direction. She is a passionate advocate of comprehensive women’s health and of SASGOG.

A networking lunch will be followed by afternoon sessions focused on the future of academic OBGYN specialists: clinical niche development, tracking within OBGYN, and the different phenotypes of mentoring through the ages. Our last plenary session is a collaboration with CUCOG, a “tradition” we started last year when Cecile Richards was the speaker. This year we will gather together to hear Valerie Castle Opipari, MD, President of the Association of Medical School Pediatric Chairs, discuss opportunities for shared advocacy between OBGYN’s and pediatricians.

SASGOG is fortunate to have an energetic group of leaders organizing a variety of career development activities for our meeting. Drs. Becky McAlister, Sarah Appleton and their teams have been busy organizing SASGOG’s pipeline programs. We are very pleased to offer support for resident travel to the SASGOG meeting through our Resident Reporter Program, funded by an unrestricted grant by Hologic, and to feature additional programming for residents planning or exploring careers as academic specialists. Drs. Nancy Gaba and Todd Jenkins have been busy building upon last year’s breakout session to offer an expanded program for current and aspiring division directors. I am also grateful to the cadre of SASGOG mentors who have helped me implement a presidential initiative by volunteering to spend the 7-8:00 hour providing 1:1 career counseling sessions to our members.

SASGOG will be sponsoring 2 events during the ACOG Annual Clinical and Scientific Meeting. The SASGOG Scientific Session is open to all ACOG meeting registrants and will occur Sunday, May 7, from 8-11am in the San Diego Convention Center Room 33A. The Program Chair, Dr. Tony Ogburn, has organized a high value morning featuring a wide range of topics relevant to OBGYN practice. The session will feature presentations of the top 3 (award-winning) abstracts submitted by SASGOG members, as well as return visit by SASGOG member and former O&G editor James Scott, MD, who will discuss “Recently Published Papers Important to Your Practice.” In addition, SASGOG is one of the societies participating in the ACOG “Cutting Edge Topics in OBGYN” session on Monday, May 8, from 1-2:30 pm in Convention Center Ballroom 6C. The session is chaired by SASGOG Founding Board Member, Ches Thompson, MD, and includes 15-minute presentations by the leaders of AUGS, ASRM, SASGOG, SGO and SMFM highlighting what’s new and important to OBGYN practice. The SASGOG session of Cutting Edge is named in honor of Kathryn M. and Thomas F. Purdon, MD.

Finally, all of the above would not be possible without the support of our new Executive Director, Nancy Frankel, PhD, her team from NFS Consulting, and you, our members. The engagement of a vibrant membership helps SASGOG dream big in pursuit of our mission of excellence! During or after the meeting please share your ideas with our Board of Directors or with Nancy. Your thoughtful insights will fuel our Board discussions on Saturday and over the subsequent months as we engage in a formal strategic planning process.

We hope you have a wonderful day that refills your cup and recharges your batteries for the important work we do as academic specialists. I look forward to seeing you at the reception!

Best wishes,

Lee A. Learman, MD, PhDSASGOG President
