NOTICE: New for Homecoming 2014

Just a Head’s-Up…The Alumni Association wants to remind former Middletown students that the Website www.alumniclass.com/middletownareahs is not affiliated with the Middletown Area Alumni Association. Any money paid online does not count toward your MAHS Alumni Association membership; it is merely a payment for subscription to the site. We do see the site’s value to our community but wanted to clarify this as we’ve had several members ask. The School District has unveiled a new and improved Website and has given the Alumni Association its own area online. Look for the direct link on www.raiderweb.org and check out our group page on Facebook!

CHANGE IN VENUE FOR THE EVENING ACTIVITIES: The dinner, program/business meeting, and DJ entertainment provided by Dan Steele will be held at the American Legion Post 594, 137 E. High St., Middletown, PA. A cash bar will be available.

ATTENTION Middletown Cheerleading Alumni! We're asking YOU to get involved in Homecoming again this year!Any alumni cheerleaders from Middletown Area High School who would like to participate in cheering during the Homecoming parade and football game, please contact Ashley Leggore at [email protected].

We will have practices about 2 weeks prior to Homecoming to learn some of the chants. Also we will be ordering T-shirts to wear during the parade & game. Practice times and T-shirt prices will be announced at a later date.

DR. HERB HENDERSONBorn in New Jersey, Herb moved to Middletown with his uncle Jack

Davis, after his parents were killed in an auto accident, when he was 8 years old. He went to Coble’s one room school house and came to MHS when he was in ninth grade. He was in the chorus, on the basketball and track teams. Fortunately he was in the band, as that is where he and Audra met!

Upon graduation, Herb enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was an Electronics Technician on a P2V Neptune Aircraft. He had duty in many places and was discharged in 1955 but stayed in the Reserves for four more years.

After the Navy, Herb attended Elizabethtown College and Temple Dental School. While at Temple, he belonged to Psi O Fraternity where he was Grandmaster his senior year. He worked many jobs to get through college and dental school. After two years working with Dr. Norman Koehler, he opened his own office in Camp Hill, where he practiced until 1994. He started the Dental Clinic at the Masonic Homes and then took over Dr. Carl Freeborn’s practice for 15 years.

He was President of the Middletown Rotary Club in 1973.Herb was a Dental Officer in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1962

to 1994. He was Chief of the Dental Clinic at U. S. Army War College, Carlisle, for 14 years and was Commander of 458th Dental Detachment in Philadelphia for five years. He finished his career as Commander of the 316th Station Hospital. He retired his Unit, Flag and himself, as Colonel, in 1994. In 2009, when his grandson, Aarron Henderson, graduated from the US Air Force Academy, he had the honor of commissioning him a Second Lieutenant and pinning his bars on him.

After working in Camp Hill for a few years, Herb decided he wanted to learn to fly. He got his license, instrument and multi- engine ratings. He flew for about 30 years with Audra as his co-pilot. After that he took up golf, model airplanes and stained glass.

In 1969, the Hendersons moved to Middletown, into a home where he worked and lived in the garage apartment when young. He and Audra raised their four children in that home. It has been a busy and happy home. Although it is quieter than in the past, it is thankfully livened up when their grandchildren spend time with them!

AUDRA HENDERSONAudra was born in Middletown to Stanley and Ella Pehowic,

the youngest of five children, all graduates of MHS. In school, she was in the choruses, octette, plays, musicals, a majorette in the band and a violinist in the orchestra. She played hockey, was manager of a basketball team and was on the debating team. She was a Girl Scout and played the piano. She was a member of the National Honor Society.

Upon graduating, Audra went to KenDelle, school of Cosmetology. She was married to Herb Henderson in 1952. While he was in college and dental school, she worked at Olmsted AFB and had her own beauty shoppe.

Audra is a member of Seven Sorrows Roman Catholic Church where she has been in its choir since 1948. She was on the building committee for her church. She worked at the church festivals, funeral committee, was on the church cleaning committee, helps with Meals on Wheels and volunteers at the Middletown food bank.

Audra was a member of the “Happy Wanderers” and she participates every year in the Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service held at Seven Sorrows.

Audra was a member of GMEDC. She is on the Middletown Holiday House Tour Committee and Middletown Garden Club Committee. She was president of The Woman’s Club of Middletown. She was a member of the West Shore Players, was a Music Fest Committee member and is a member of The Olmsted Players’ Theatre Group. Audra was a Girl Scout leader for years.

The Hendersons hosted two exchange students, Marcia from Brazil and Hiro from Japan.

Audra is a board member of the Middletown Area Alumni Association. She was an active member of Middletown’s Quarter Millennial.

She organized a party at Frey Village for 46 people who lived in Middletown the longest. She was a videographer for “Hometown Middletown” shown by WITF.

Audra is a member of the “Nifty Fifties”, Middletown class of 1950. She helps organize their five-year reunions, one-year picnic and their monthly luncheons.

She was a volunteer with Compassionate Care Hospice since 1998. She was on the Board at Frey Village for four years, where she also belonged to the Abiders, Spiritual Life Committee and Hospice St. John. She was vice president of the Auxiliary and she does the monthly birthday parties for the residents.

Audra was a finalist in Central Penn Parent’s Healthcare Heroes, as Volunteer of the year in 2012.

She models for a local ladies’ store. She enjoys photography, piano, doing genealogy and the computer, but most of all, she enjoys spending time with her grandchildren!

Audra has been married to her high school sweetheart, Herb, for 62 years, their anniversary is today, October 25.

The Hendersons have four children, Julie, Hesh, Kellie and Mark, all graduates of MAHS. They have six grandchildren, from 7 to 27; Capt. Aarron Henderson, Alaina and Nikelle Henderson, William Doremus, and Davis and Jude Henderson, all of whom Audra baby sat, two days a week. They are the joys of her life!

The Hendersons are honored to be chosen as Grand Marshals.

The 2013 Homecoming Day was held on October 19, 2013. Following an activity-filled week for students in the school district, the day marked Middletown Area High School’s 50th Anniversary of Homecoming Celebrations. The Alumni Association honored the Class of 1963 as the 50-year Honor Class. Also honored were all past Grand Marshals and all past Homecoming Queens. All that were able to attend were featured in the parade.

The parade began at 11:30 at Market St. and ended at the War Memorial Field, where a tailgate lunch was provided for Alumni members and guests. The 1988 District 3 Class AAA championship football team and coaches joined the present football team on the sidelines as they were recognized at the beginning of the football game. Halftime featured the crowning of the 2013 Homecoming Queen, Alyssa Stone escorted by Cody Fox. With the second half of the game, the efforts of the Blue Raiders were thwarted by the East Pennsboro Panthers.

Evening activities at the High School began with a buffet dinner in the school cafeteria. Dinner was followed by the Alumni Association’s annual business meeting and recognition program. The Homecoming Court was introduced — Queen Alyssa Stone and Cody Fox, along with Jordan Arnold and Todd Houser, Elizabeth Young and Christian Roberts, Brittney Zavoda and Brendan Leahy, Kelsey Thomas and Zachari Ulerick. The Class of 1963 was recognized, as was Oldest Alumnus — Charles Selcher, those traveling the farthest to attend and 5-year Reunion Classes. Entertainment was provided by individuals and groups from the MASD and Alumni. This year the evening ended on a great new note with a dance for all in the High School gym with music provided by the group, “Platform Soul”.

ၽၸ¤¨¡£¡®Honor Class of 1964

This year our class of 1964 is celebrating our 50th reunion. Our Class Colors are gold and white, Class Flower is gold- tipped white carnations and our Motto is: The goal of yesterday will be the starting point of tomorrow.

Quoting Mr. Brunner: This class will be long remembered as one of the most outstanding classes in the school’s history. He said we have endured the hardships of split-sessions and are now acting as forerunners in being the first graduating class from our brand new high school. Also that we were a tremendous help in acting as leaders to make our first year in this new building a very happy one. We were the largest class to graduate in the Middletown School System.

In 1964 America was invaded by “The Beatles” which we watched on the “Ed Sullivan Show”, although many of us still danced to the Motown sound and enjoyed the dances after the football games. James Bond, “Mary Poppins”, “Bewitched”, “Adams Family”, Pop Tarts and the Ford Mustang were just a few things that came about in 1964.

Our team school spirit was the best! Of course, why not — CAC Champions in Football and Basketball. Every player (Savages) did his share of battling on for the win, led by none other than Harvey “Tony” Colston.

Harvey “Tony” Colston1. Participated in Football, Basketball & Track2. Co-Captain Varsity Football3. Most valuable offensive player, Middletown Area team4. Earned a total of 10 varsity letters5. 1st Team – All Conference, CAC

6. Class A – Most Valuable Back7. PA’s leading scorer – 166 points8. 1st Team – All State, U.P.I.9. 2nd Team – A.P.10. Honorable Mention, Scholastic All American Back11. Big “33”, Backfield

We are having our Class Reunion on October 24, 2014. It is going to be held at the Hershey Italian Club, starting at 6 pm. We are looking forward to a big turnout!

General DonationsJuly 11, 2013 – July 31, 2014

Fall 2014 Ç

££Š¤¦¡¤¤Unrestricted, general operating support donations by Alumni cover the organizational costs of conducting day-to-day business. For the most

part, these donations are used to cover the costs associated with producing this annual Alumni News newsletter, including design, printing, and postage. In addition to dues income each year, general donations also enable the association to give back to the school district to benefit high school clubs and organizations, as well as student activity funds for the middle school and elementary schools.

AUGUST 2014Dear Alumni,

This greeting is sent to you as we prepare for the 2014-15 school year. Summer has been a busy time for Middletown Area School District as construction has begun on a new high school facility. We are very excited for the future but will hold on to the memories of the past 50+ years of education in our current building. The projected completion date for the new high school is summer of 2016, and the Class of 2017 will be the first class to graduate from the brand new building.

As we eagerly watch the new building go up, we will also be busy with our bridging project led by Alumni Association President, Earl W. Bright, IV. We encourage any interested alumni to contact Mr. Bright to become part of the committee working to bridge the history of the current high school to the new high school facility. It is important that all of the memorabilia that has had its home at Middletown Area High School and the Life Fitness Center find a new home in our future school facilities.

Alumni play a special role in the legacy of a school system. Several of you have asked if you can contribute in some way to the new high school project. Please look for information regarding this

opportunity in future communications. For those who no longer reside in the District, please consider following us on Facebook or Twitter to stay informed about school year events, news and accomplishments. You may also be interested in reading our annual report to the community which can be found on the District website at raiderweb.org. If you haven’t visited your alma mater recently, this would be a great year to come home to Middletown. 2014 is the 51st anniversary of Homecoming and will be celebrated the weekend of October 24 – 25, 2014. Look for more details about Homecoming events in this newsletter.

The District continues to be interested in hearing from any alumni who are willing to share news or professional accomplishments with us. We are Blue Raider proud of our alumni and would like to communicate your stories to other alumni, parents, and students. If you are interested in sharing your news, please contact Jody Zorbaugh, Communications Specialist, at [email protected].

Thank you for your continued support of Middletown Area School District!

Warm Regards,

Lori A. Suski, Ed.D.SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS
