Brisbane Writers Festival returns for the 54th time to explore ideas, identity and imagination through conversation and debate powered by the year’s best writing. You’ll notice we look a little different.
For the very first time, BWF will be brought
to you by UPLIT. As of July 2016, this will
be the new name of the organisation.
UPLIT is a cultural champion of curiosity
and creativity across Queensland.
Brisbane Writers Festival will continue
to thrive as the centrepiece to UPLIT’s
program. But fifty years of organic and
significant growth means we now exist well
beyond these five days and encompass
a year-long suite of events and bespoke
community programs and projects.
UPLIT enriches and connects Queensland
communities through stories and ideas.
Come with us as we write our next chapter.

Brisbane Writers Festival, an annual
celebration of local literary culture,
has a reputation as a friendly and
welcoming event that encourages
participation, provokes lively debate
and makes space for reflection.
In 2016, Brisbane Writers Festival
explores the themes of family and
belonging and introduces authors and
ideas across many genres, inspiring us
to read more widely and think outside
the box.
The Festival will feature an opening
address by noted American author
Lionel Shriver (We Need to Talk
About Kevin) and appearances by
vampire trilogy writer Justin Cronin,
photographer and true-crime
writer Mark Tedeschi, along with an
impressive range of international,
national and local literary names.
It is wonderful to see that our own
talented Queensland writers will be
well-represented with Nick Earls,
Ellen van Neervan, Richard Fidler,
Angela Slatter, Rebecca Sparrow
and Yassmin Abdel-Magied.
For the first time, the Festival will
host a Philosopher-in-Residence to
stimulate deeper discussions, to be
shared between magazine editor
Antonia Case and UQ Professor
Frederick d’Agostino.
Children’s writer and illustrator
Katherine Battersby’s forthcoming
book Little Wing will come to
life during the Festival as part of
Alphabet Zoo, an interactive world
for ages 3 – 8.
The long-running Brisbane Writers
Festival is one of the country’s most
well-established events and my
Government continues to support the
Festival and encourage the ongoing
engagement between readers
and writers.
Connection makes us. Alone we are
curious individuals, collectively we build
greater understanding, more insight
and meaningful exchange. When
connected we can change the world.
The faster our world becomes, the
less it’s built with real connection in
mind, we are erecting higher fences,
living more of our lives indoors and
online, and growing more fearful
of everything.
From 7 – 11 September, Brisbane
Writers Festival connects bright
and curious minds – writers,
artists, thinkers, innovators –
for a city-wide conversation.
More than that, the Festival creates
a vibrant platform to come together
in one place to stoke the fire of
our collective curiosity. It stirs our
passion for stories, for the books that
contain them and the authors who
win our devotion.
Welcome to Brisbane’s superb annual
celebration of words and ideas. Your
voice is welcome, your viewpoint
too – allow it to be challenged, open
yourself to the opportunity to be
inspired by the storytellers and
iconoclasts who seduce, elevate
and change us.
Why change our sacred myths for your sacred myths?
No, not assimilation, but integration, not submergence, but our uplifting,

Connection and Belonging with Lionel ShriverWriter and straight-talking activist Lionel Shriver
isn’t afraid of controversy. Her 13 novels, including
We Need To Talk About Kevin, Big Brother, The Post-
Birthday World and most recently, The Mandibles,
have explored themes like motherhood, obesity,
economic collapse, America’s health system, and
terrorism – uncomfortable realities written from an
outsider’s perspective.
Lionel opens this year’s Festival with her reflections
on why we identify with each other in communities,
and how belonging to one group shouldn’t preclude
us from exploring another. As a writer who inhabits
unfamiliar and sometimes unlikeable characters,
Lionel is a firm believer in branching out beyond
the world she inhabits. With her trademark candour
and dry wit, Lionel discusses breaking boundaries,
and how writing about the unknown is a form of
connection in itself.
I am in flight from my own
story every day and it
dogs me like a faithful stray.

Story +Story+ returns to BWF for the fourth year running. This year, internationally renowned award winning writer and digital creator Kate Pullinger and Google Creative Labs Director Tom Uglow will engage in conversation with Dr Donna Hancox about the Future of Literature at Kelvin Grove’s Creative Industries Precinct.
This event offers BWF audiences a chance to explore our digital futures with two of the most innovative thinkers in the world as they talk about their own recent projects and broader ideas about literature. The venue at Kelvin Grove allows for this conversation to be streamed live to Southbank and also the Roma library so participants from the July workshops are able to access
world class arts activities regardless of their location.

Introducing Antonia Case and Professor Frederick d’AgostinoYou’ve heard from your favourite
author, discovered a debut novelist
and pondered ideas, big and small.
But now you’re wondering: how does
this affect me? What can I do next?
And what does it all mean?
Over the course of the Festival, our
two 2016 Philosophers-in-Residence
will be attending events, posing
questions, and approaching our
attendees to find out what people
are talking about and why. They will
connect the dots and highlight the
ideas that resonate, culminating in a
closing address on Sunday.
Antonia Case was previously the
literary editor of New Philosopher
Magazine before founding and
becoming editor of Womankind, a
publication that discusses the best
ideas from philosophy, sociology
and economics. With a background
in journalism, Antonia’s Festival
approach weaves philosophical
thought throughout the themes
of belonging and connection,
underpinning the notion of story.
Professor Frederick d’Agostino is a
philosopher and social scientist based
at The University of Queensland. He
has edited the Australasian Journal
of Philosophy; Politics, Philosophy
and Economics, and the Routledge
Companion to Political and Social
Philosophy. Professor d’Agostino is
passionate about people, and will
engage with artists and audiences
both on the ground and online
throughout the Festival.

A.C. Grayling
A.C. Grayling’s writing is grounded
in the idea that philosophy should
engage with the world and make
itself useful. His latest title The Age
of Genius: The Seventeeth Century
and the Birth of the Modern Mind
investigates the exact moment
that history changed course so
profoundly and began to shape
everything that followed. With a
deft touch and charming good
humour, Grayling offers an insightful
examination in the history and
philosophy of humanity.

complex process. Variables such as paper
stock, page size, page count, cover style, binding, printing technique, inks and whether to print locally or off shore need to be carefully considered.
For a stress-free experience, let us guide you through this matrix of decisions to produce a great book that meets your quality, price and turnaround expectations.
Paradigm Print Media has been assisting Australian and international self-publishers since 2004. Centrally located in Albion, we welcome you to browse our sample library and explore the possibilities for your own publication.
