Every country has yet faced a lingering economic slump from last year, and definitely no one can escape the crisis. What we can do to get back on track is to understand and accept the situation. We should pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and move forward.

“If we give up, we lose. If we think we’re dead, we’re dead. We have to move on,” said M.L. Kathathong Thongyai, director of the Office of Product Development and Value-added Products, Department of Export Promotion. I would like to cite his quote from one of the columns in this 8HOURS issue because I totally agree with his statement. I want to encourage people to think this way. No matter what you do and what career position you are at, if you think positive, you can always see light in the future.

We also present the stories of two well-known companies: 3M and Plan Toys. The office of 3M has been in Thailand for over four decades, and recently the company just redecorated every square inch of its office space to truly reflect the 3M identity. For over three decades, Plan Toys is the first company who has made use of rubberwood in Southern Thailand and transformed them into toys for children. In this issue, we also present the story of nine award-winning green architectures in Thailand from The Association of Siamese Architects Under Royal Patronage (ASA), and the “behind the scene” story of our own Rockworth furniture design.

Last but not least, I want to encourage everyone to step forward. To take small-but-sure steps is better than never start stepping at all.

At the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York, the nation’s premier exhibition of modern home furnishings, more than 600 designers and manufacturers presented their collections and stunning designs for living rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, outdoor patios and many more. One of the highlights of the event, ICFF Editors Awards were given to best-of-show products in a total of 16 categories by an esteemed group of international design editors at New York City’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.

This year’s winners for the ICFF Editors Awards; Duravit, which won in the Body of Work category, launched Starck K, a collection of kitchen sinks designed by Philippe Starck, marking the company’s entrance into the kitchen market. In the Outdoor Furniture category, the award went to Vitra, Inc.’s Vegetal Chair by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec.

In the lighting category, the rainbow-esque idea from Kartell US and their lamps come in a rainbow of colors, laid over a teardrop base shining the colored light with unique shades such as flamingo, tangerine and violet. Also the ICFF displayed cardboard encased pendant lighting, courtesy of Seattle based Graypants. DIY feel, but they didn’t look cheap at all. Not like a sassy shoe rack from San Francisco based designer Fernando A Robert uses a wall-mounted fixture to hold the sneakers. Shrine Shoe Rack make a shrine for the footwear, mounting them like pieces of art on the wall.

The 2009 State of Design Festival in July throughout metropolitan Melbourne, and regional centres around Victoria, Australia. Festival programs demonstrate and broadly communicate how the Victorian and Australian design profession can improve living conditions, create sustainable development opportunities, and generate new and innovative products and services. More than 100,000 people attended to experience one or more of the 75 events across the Festival’s four main programs: Design Capital/Business Seminar Series, Design for Everyone/Public & Cultural Program, Design:Made:Trade/Industry Program and Premier’s Design Awards Awards Program (next held in 2010)

We are swept into difficult times of economic recession all over the world. But no matter how deeply the situation has affected us, we must strive and rise above this difficulty.

“We can’t give up. If we give up, we lose. If we think we’re dead, we’re dead. We have to move on. And good attitude towards the problem is an important key to moving forward,” said M.L. Kathathong Thongyai, director of the Office of Product Development and Value-added Products, Department of Export Promotion.

Thongyai said everyone is affected by the crisis. But it’s also a good time to turn calamity into opportunity. “Everyone is affected and we can’t get away from it. But we must think of it as an opportunity to reevaluate ourselves, including our strong points and limitations. We have to ask ourselves if our company is well organized and structured? What are our strengths and weaknesses? If we don’t have our own brand, should we brand ourselves? It’s time to retreat and present new ideas. When the crisis is fading away, we will be able to offer new products to the world market,” he said.

And the key factor in advancement is our exceptional distinctiveness, he said. “Design used to play a minimal role in selling the products. Now it is rather significant to also incorporate product design into attracting consumers. The combination of design, branding, good customer service and other creativeness are also important because they’re our strengths.”

The market wants something unique. And the company needs to create a stronger brand and company identity to lead the market, he said. “We need to be creative by using our local wisdom to present better and different products from our competitors,” he said. “It all comes down to design, creativity and innovation. These are all our identity that can’t be copied by others because it has long been our cultural legacy. We have to take advantage of our creative human resources. We have to make the utmost use of what our DNA has to offer.”

The director also cites an example of successful foreign commodities. Some products are made in limited quantity per year but their businesses can still be sustained because of good branding, craftsmanship, modern design and high function. This shows that they have well-executed planning, distinctive characteristics and they use their strengths wisely.

We shall get past and overcome whatever critical situations the future may bring upon us as long as we do not surrender to this very economic excruciation and continue working the magic of our creative minds.

9 OUTSTANDING GREEN ARCHITECTURES IN THAILAND

Over the past few decades, environmental and natural resource problems have triggered changes in many fields and industries. Green architecture is one of them. It was once regarded as fashion but it has proven its value through time. And we now accept that environmental friendly buildings set a new direction how the buildings of the present and the future could or should actually be.

WHEN ENVIRONMENTAL FRIENDLY BUILDINGS HAVE SET A NEW STANDARD FOR THE BUILDING DESIGN OF THE FUTURE.

The Association of Siamese Architects Under Royal Patronage (ASA) has continuously pushed the green architecture project forward. Recently this year the organization gave away the ASA Green Award for the first time to recognize and praise nine green architectures in Thailand and to inspire architects to create more green architectures in the country. And here are the nine award-winning green architectures:

1. Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), designed by the design and construction department of EGAT. The building was designed to capture natural light and minimize the use of artificial lights. The awnings are simple yet modern and classic, which perfectly blend with the surrounding landscape.

2. The Thai Farmers Bank, Chaeng wattana branch, designed by Design 103 International. Renovated from the old building, this internationally recognized the green architecture stands on a great location and pays great attention to water and energy reservation and environment that enhance health and wellness.

3. Bank of Thailand, designed by Plan Architects. The building focuses on energy saving and maximizes the use of natural light. Simple but elegant exterior promises what the organization delivers and is a good model for other public buildings.

4. The Avenue Ratchayothin Siam Future, designed by Contour Co., Ltd. This development project is outstandingly determined to save a treasured piece of

green space and the existing trees. It’s a place where the interior and exterior spaces are perfectly and seamlessly harmonized.

5. Samui International Airport, designed by Habita Co., Ltd. The uniqueness of this architecture is the harmonious blend of culture, nature and design. With the use of natural materials, the airport smartly and elegantly presents local architectural style that enhances the flow of air circulation and natural light.

6. The Bangkok University Landmark Complex, designed by A49. Stupendous and stylish, the outstanding feature of this building is the gigantic green roof with elegant design of rafters. The architecture provides the feeling as if the building is sinking into the ground, which reflects the idea of birth and return to nature.

7. The operation building of Faculty of Economics, Kasetsart University, designed by Tonsilp Architect Co., Ltd. Highlights of this building are natural air circulation and shade structure with sun angle calculator. The amount of UV protection provided by a structure is contingent upon the angle of the sun.

8. InterfaceFLOR, designed by Thai Nakano Co., Ltd. This manufacturing facility is first in Thailand that has conservation steeped in its foundation, from green space and sustainable site development to energy-and-water-efficient landscaping design. This green manufacturing facility undoubtedly inspires other manufacturers and companies to follow suit.

9. Priest Educational Building (Prapuna mantaneebutr Mahataera) at Wat Khao Buddha Khodom, Chonburi, designed by Suriya Umpansiriratana. With the use of natural and plain materials, the building reflects the Buddhist notion of sufficiency, stability and sympathy to others. The architectural design is based on the deep sense of Buddhist philosophy that many people may find it hard to understand and interpret.

Building Energy Code

Early this year the government of Thailand strengthened the Building Energy Code for the enforcement of energy conservation requirements for new buildings. This code sets a better standard for new buildings to adopt system performance requirements for the maximum achievement with minimum energy consumption. This is a huge step the government has taken to develop policies concerning energy conservation.

The vivacity of atmosphere is prominent in this office. Each piece of furniture carefully and orderly placed reinforces the office space to be visually and physically relaxing and exciting. Applying 3M products’ uniqueness into the interior design also well reflects the company identity.

“Good mobility enabling the employees to sit down and work anywhere in the office was what the customer (3M) requested. Hence, we designed a flexible workspace by combining work and

relaxing zones together,” said Thongake Horsiritham, one of the design team members from T’int Design Studio, the design company famed for its creative layouts and good usage of materials and colors. The narrow strip shape of the office space, however, became the challenge of this project.

“Normally office space is round circulation but this area is quite long and rectangular. Since the corridor must be wide enough for workers, we had to allocate the area into different units and parallel the desks and set of relaxed sofas along the long rectangular strip that be automatically defined space also. At each desk, junction box with electricity cord and LAN line has been installed. The employees can bring their personal mobile unit and simply plug it in, and they’re

all set. A chair can easily be moved from one desk to the other. It really is a freestyle office,” he added.

“We chose Rockworth’s work station because of its ergonomics. Their chairs, made from various materials of your choice, can be adjusted in many different levels and angles, they’re also well ventilated. The modern looking desks are built from long-lasting materials, each carrying junction box to hide all messy wires,” he said.

Apart from good mobility within limited space, the office is given a relaxing atmosphere with graphic patterns on transparent glass sheets.“We try to incorporate the identity of 3M products in all areas not only to show that 3M is proud of their products, but also to show

their work style. For instance, the graphics on the glass sheets refer to 3M film products. Columns form and color are also a reminder of Post-it. Actually 3M carries a great number of products but for the most part we selected some stationery for this office followed objective of this project,” he explained.

Products are not solely what represents your workplace, but style and work environment also distinguish the identity methodology and characteristics of the company.

Thirty years ago we only used latex from rubber trees. The trunks were normally burned as waste after the latex was completely squeezed from the plant. The burning of the rubber trees inspired Vitool Viraponsavan, a Trang province native who grew up witnessing how those rubber trees were burned in vain, to make use of rubberwood and transformed them into toys for children. Now Mr. Viraponsavan is a president of Plan Creations Co. Ltd, the company that produces high-quality wooden toys known as “Plan Toys” throughout the world.

The first generation of Plan Toys’ wooden creations was designed for pre-school students. They were aimed at the basic development of primary school children.

“We created small pieces of wood in different shapes such as triangle, square and circle so that children could learn basic mathematics, height, colors and grouping. There were wooden blocks that children could put together to create city or castle. They could also learn basic science in the building process. In the second decade, we began to develop “Plan Dollhouse.” This involved the role-playing of a house fully furnished with furniture, dolls, cars and other facilities that showed relationship within the family. In our 3rd decade, after the year of 2000, we stepped into what we called “Plan City”, which is playing a bigger role in term of scale. It’s now city planning. It’s about relationship in the society,” Santi Vacharapanyaong, product design manager, explained the development of the company in each decade. He added that the latest Dollhouse edition, “Green Dollhouse,” is

designed in response to global warming. The Green Dollhouse is an energy-saving house, which teaches children about solar cell and wind energy as well as irrigation and garbage recycling.

Apart from the safety standard, which has always been the priority in the designing and developing of the toys, Plan Toys is also an environmental friendly company.

“Generally, when you design a toy, the process is finished once such toy serves its purpose. But for us, we do our best in using the minimum resources to create a particular toy. Our philosophy is to get rid of the unnecessary,” said Vacharapanyaong. He gave an example of Tower Pounding, a pre-school toy that the ball can be rolled on a bent wood instead of a rail. This design did not only win Red Dot Design Award, but it has also been considered the design based on natural resource reservation.

Even though wooden toys are only one of many choices of games and playthings these days, they are filled with emotional tenderness and connection with nature—something that should be provided to the children.

“Wooden toys give off different feeling in comparison with toys made of plastic or other materials. There’s still room for new perspective and creativity as children grow, and we design toys according to the changes of society and the behaviors of those who play them,” he added.

This is why Plan Toys is still determined to continue developing their wooden toys with basic child development and environmental friendliness in mind.

Feeling lethargic, numb or confused is not new or shocking for anyone who works a 9 to 5 job. It is safe to say that 99.99% of people must have had this experience. It tells that your brain is exhausted. And if you don’t do anything about it, not only the tiring brain will impact your emotion, but it will also affect the efficiency of your work.

So whenever you feel that your brain is blocked and you run out of new ideas, don’t just ignore it. Take care of it!

Start with drinking plenty of water because it will help with the chemical balance in your brain and nerve system as well as refreshing and energizing your body. A drink of water not only helps when you’re tired, but it also ebbs your sleepiness and stress. It is a good idea to always have a glass of water on your desk and drink it frequently.

Now it’s time for some simple brain exercises by:

Writing number 8 in the air. Start writing from the left side of the number and drag the line until it completes. It is recommended to exercise both of your hands, five times each. This method helps coordinate each side of the brain to work together better, causing your reading and comprehension skills to be more effective.

Writing zigzag lines simultaneously with both hands so that both sides of your brain can function at the same time. This will allow them to better work synchronically. It also helps with better spelling and faster calculation.

Massaging your ears to stimulate the nerves by touching both ears with both hands at the same time and moving your fingers towards the top part of external ears. Then start massaging and pulling your ears gently and make your way down to the earlobes and start over from the beginning. This will help better your hearing because massaging your ears helps relax the nerves that link to your brain.

MANAGE YOUR FATIGUE AND RESOLVE YOUR DIZZINESS WITH EASY BUT EFFECTIVE BRAIN EXERCISES.

Pressing the sore spot on your forehead. This can be done by using your index and middle fingers of both hands to gently press the spot between the middle of your eyebrows and hairline. Hold it for 3-10 minutes. This is a way to loosen up and relax, and improve blood circulation.

These are some of the simplest ways to exercise your brain in office, classroom, or even in the car. Whenever you feel exhausted, stop and try these exercises and you will see that the rest for a tired brain is at your fingertips.
