A Funny Thing Happened To MyDevotional Life

On The Way To The Pulpit

own spiritual renewal?& Why is it so easy to fake being a spiri-

tual person?& What is the greatest danger a minister

faces in his own personalspiritual life?

If you have spent any time in the pulpit, youknow the temptation of guiding the spiritual life ofothers only to neglect your own. A very observantfollower of Christ once remarked, "There is a God-shaped blank in each one ofus that only God can fill."

Soan angry Eugen Peterson indicts today's pulpitministers as "a company of shopkeepers ... preoc-cupied with shopkeepers' concerns-how to keep thecustomers happy, how to lure customers away fromthe competitors down the street, how to package thegoodsso that the customers will lay out more money."!

If Peterson is right, the most vulnerable area ofministry is the minister's inner life. Paul knewsomething ofthis danger and held up a yellowflashinglight to any ofus who would follow him in preaching.He compared himself to an athlete in training: "Ibeat my body and make it my slave so that after Ihave preached to others, I myself will not be dis-qualified for the prize."?

Gerald Kennedy mentions that "Afriend ofminewho has been in ministry for many years said whattroubled him more than anything else was that somany preachers he knew were not very religiousmen."" "The alarming thing about some Christianleaders today," writes Sam Stone, "is that they seemoblivious to the implications of the message theypreach. They can shout about holy living; they can

write about the need for devotion; they can teachabout Christian behavior-but seemingly they fail torealize that the message must first be obeyed in theirown lives."!

Before this begins to look like an indictment ofevery other preacher, let me readily confess thatbooks such as Gordon MacDonald's Renewing YourSpiritual Passion, Stuart Briscoe's SpiritualStamina, and Eugene Peterson's Working TheAngles have refocused my attention for developingmy own spiritual and inner life. As these and otherbooks point out, if! am to have anything to say to mycongregation on Sunday, I must be developing myown spirituality Monday through Saturday. Butthat's hard!

Hindrances to Developing Our Spiri-tual Life

A major hurdle I encounter in my ministry isletting the urgent crowd out the important things.This is what Charles Hummel calls the Tyranny ofthe Urgent. How easy it is to become naive and tothink that one can drive the car on gas that has neverbeen put in his tank. Simply doing more, even goodstuff, can lead to inner emptiness and spiritual void.

A second hindrance is living in a culture wheninstant results are expected. This is what Bill Hybels

When we are yo~d together with (jod,our hory riving comesfrom where (jod

leads us.calls "The Instamatic Era." Businesses talk about"the bottom line." We Americans are obsessed withresults. Our culture screams at us: "The point oflifeis success." Or as Oscar Wilde put it, "In this worldthere are only two tragedies. One is not getting whatone wants, and the other is getting it."5 Looking forharvest without attention to planting is deadly.

A third hindrance is failing to value the impor-tance of crashing through the quitting points in life.This is what the Bible calls "perseverance" (James1:12; Hebrews 12:1f1). As a runner, I have facednumerous times when I was tempted to quit the race.My legs were too tired, my back was aching, and I feltI couldn't go any further. Yet, like so many otherrunners, I have learned to crash through thosequitting points and just keep running. It is sotempting at times to quit ministry. The criticisms,the depression, the expectations, the public arena-these and other forces can cause you to give up. So Ireally like Timberlake's book-It's Always Too Soonto Quit. You can't quit and live the spiritual life.

Another hurdle to developing our spiritual life isfailing to appreciate the importance of day-to-daypractices. This is what we call "habit" or "constantuse" (Hebrews 5:14). Maybe it's because ministry isgiven to interruptions. Or maybe it's because some ofus have decided that we can push a magic button tobecome spiritual or take three easy steps to becomeChrist-like. Whatever the reason, a failure to ap-preciate process-habits-can paralyze spiritualgrowth.

Another hindrance is allowing our energies andtalents to be over-worked and frustrated. This iswhat psychologists call "burn out." "We are Ameri-cans and we have been taught that all things arepossible to him who works hard. And not onlypossible, but expected! We are competitive-may thebest man win.?"writes Richard Exley.

He concludes that a minister is not immune tothe achiever syndrome of burn out: "If his publicministry is any indication ofhis work habits, then it'ssafe to conclude that he is a confirmed workaholic.He thinks nothing ofputting in 80 to 90hours a week.Suddenly, at mid-life, he realizes the futility of it all,but he is at a loss to make a change. He doesn't knowanything else. Lonely and depressed, he's especiallyvulnerable. "7

What I'm saying is simply this: there are some

major hindrances todeveloping a spirituallife in a minister's life.What seems natural,almost second nature,and very crucial is notat all easy. Of course,

God never said it would be easy!These hindrances to developing our own spiri-

tual life wreak havoc. Not only do we becomeundisciplined but we also become cozy, unrelated,irritable, and susceptible to spiritual disease. Theproblem is compounded in that fellow Christiansmay even encourage us to have this kind ofministry.

"This is not entirely our fault. Greatcrowdsofpeoplehave entered into a grandconspiracy to eliminate prayer, scripture,and spiritual direction from our lives.They are concerned with our image andstanding, with what they can measure,with what produces successful church-building programs and impressive atten-dance charts with sociologicalimpact andeconomic viability. They do their best tofill our schedules with meetings and ap-pointments so that there is time for nei-ther solitude nor leisure to be before God,to ponder scripture, to be unhurried withanother person. We get both ecclesiasti-cal and community support in conductinga ministry that is inattentive to God andtherefore without foundations. Still, thatis no excuse.I"

Solutions: Living a Holy Life"Holiness" conveys to some people stained-glass

windows, halos, and a lifestyle that has nothing to do'with the 21st century. The Bible, however, describesholy people as being something other than anemic: asuntanned John the Baptist, a tough Elijah, and areal man known as Jesus, are not found living inmonasteries. They live in the real world. Instead ofbeing miserable, they are filled with joy. They knowhow to tame lions, sing in prisons, and look death inthe eye. They are real human beings who havelearned to daily walk with God and be transformedby that walk.

"Holiness" is not for the elite, but the elect.Holiness is not so much the mark ofjust a few peopleselected by the church to be saints as it is a majorcharacteristic of every Christian. Paul "did not usethe name Saint exclusively forhimself and those likehim, but applied it to all the members in the churchin Corinth and, as the rest ofthe epistle makes clear,

this included some who had not progressed far in thelife of sanctification. All alike are called to be saints(I Cor. 1:1-2)."9

Maybe we need the reminder - God expectspersonal spiritual growth in our lives. «Anyonewholives on milk, not being still an infant, is not ac-quainted with the teaching about righteousness"(Hebrews 5:13). Such spiritual growth requires thatwe be yoked together with God. While we are free towalk in the harmony with God, we are not to wanderoff and "do our own thing." Even if members of thechurch help us to do it (Luke 9:23-24).

When we are yoked together with God, our holyliving comes from where God leads us. "From be-ginning to end sanctification is the work of God.Nobody ever made himself or herself holy, for holi-ness is far beyond the reach of the natural person."!"Holy living is always something into which Godguides us on a daily basis. If we are to become onewith God, if we are to become holy people, if we are totruly belong to him, then we must stay as close to himas possible. I am particularly impressed with HarryIronside's Holiness: The False and The True in whichKenneth Prior gives the following three agents ofholy living:

Sanctification by the Blood of Christ:eternal

Sanctification by the Holy Spirit: internalSanctification by the Word of God:

external results"

So instead ofholiness being for just the elite or a

negative connotation involving the avoidance of sin,a holy, disciplined life is one that is totally given overto service to God. Such discipline requires dailywork, sustained effort, self-denial, perseverance, andaccountability.

Ifwe are to become perfect like God, if we want tobe mature, there are no magic push-buttons or simpleshort cuts. Holiness is the foundation ofthe disciplinedlife, and it is discipline that protects the devotionallife of the minister.P As you and I read carefully thearticles in this particular issue, we will be encour-aged to practice the disciplines of holy living. Yet asRichard Foster maintains, "Even spiritual exercisesin disciplines can be terribly hollow. The real centeris hearing God's voice and obeying his word."13Themore we listen to God and the more we walk withhim, the more we thirst for spiritual things. Perhapsthat's to be expected because in the words of HenriNouwen, "The mystical has been short-changed inour culture."14 So Richard Foster, who has writtensome excellent books on devotional living, says,''There's been a great disillusionment with the su-perficiality of modern culture, especially the reli-gious culture and a longing for something that canreally help."15

So whether we are dealing with time, distrac-tions, consistency, or other problems, honesty withGod demands that we realize that we cannot givespiritual guidance to others until we have spent timewith Godhimself. In the words ofOswald Chambers'classic, "I must give MY UTMOST FOR HISmGHEST."
