Farms are a rich part of Montgomery County’s local culture, history and beauty. Yet they are somuch more than just pretty scenery. Farming

families, whether new to the business or long-standing,preserve a way of life—while working landscapes provide fresh and healthy food for today’s citizens and future generations.

With a mission of preserving and connecting our natural areas, farmland and neighborhood green spaces,Montgomery County Lands Trust helps farmers andMother Nature yield healthy benefits.

Much of our best local farmland, however, continues to be under threat of development. Many consumers—out of habit—gravitate toward purchasing pre-packaged foods shipped from around the world even when a delicious, convenient alternative is possible.

The Trust and our partners believe it is important to not only link our citizens to local food but also to provide you with a real connection to the land whereour carrots, corn and strawberries are grown and directlyto the growers themselves.

A rising number of farm stands and farm markets existthroughout the county. However, they will only remain an asset for us if the land can remain in active agriculture, thereby escaping conversion to housing developments or shopping centers.

Our local farms will be sustained and prosper by economic support from the surrounding families whoknow about them, can locate them, and are motivated to purchase local food.

Shop Local Save Land provides you with a guide to makinginformed choices about the food you eat, with the recog-nition that buying local helps to maintain and supportMontgomery County’s important farming economy.

Sincerely,

Dulcie FlahartyExecutive DirectorMontgomery County Lands Trust

Montgomery County FarmlandPreservation ProgramSince 1990 Montgomery County has made a commit-ment to assisting our county’s farming communities bycreating opportunities for preserving and maintainingworking farms as a valued economic, cultural and natural resource.

The Montgomery County Farmland PreservationProgram makes it possible for eligible farmers to holdon to their land and to continue their farming opera-tion by selling an agricultural easement. When the ease-ment is sold, the owner keeps the land but no longerhas the right to build non-agricultural buildings. The landmust remain in farming in perpetuity. If the farmer latersells the land, the new owner must continue to growproductive crops or pastures. Applying to the programis voluntary.

As of October 2011, 140 farms have been approved forpermanent preservation, for a total of 8,379 acres ofcounty farmland that will never be developed. Thosefarmers who are interested in preserving their land areencouraged to submit an application to Elizabeth Emlen.

All universities engage in researchand teaching, but the nation’s morethan 100 land-grant colleges anduniversities have a third criticalmission—extension. “Extension”means “reaching out,” and, alongwith teaching and research, land-grant institutions such as PennState “extend” their resources, solving public needs with college or university resources throughnon-formal, non-credit programs.

These programs are administered through county and regional extension offices, which bring land-grantexpertise to the most local of levels. Penn StateCooperative Extension’s mission is to enhance quality of life by providing informal outreach educational opportunities to individuals, families, businesses and communities throughout the Commonwealth.

The Extension teaches people how to solve problems, do something better, live healthier, manage resourceswisely, and create a sustainable future.
