A message from Marie Mitchell, Chief Officer of CAVS CAVS, Carmarthenshire County Council and the Wales Cooperative Centre are very aware of the impact which the COVID-19 pandemic is currently having on the third sector and want to ensure that the needs and the concerns of the sector are heard during this difficult and unprecedented time.

In order to assess the situation, we have created a questionnaire

for third sector organisations in order to be able to assess the

impact in Carmarthenshire as well as on individual organisations.

We are encouraging all third sector organisations to complete the

questionnaire and submit by 24th June 2020.

Due to the current Covid-19 advice, our office is now closed however all CAVS staff have been equipped to work from home and we’re still doing everything we can to support voluntary organisations, volunteering

and the general public during this difficult time. Stay safe.

Goodbye Sian

Sian Johnson CAVS Support Administrator

In April, CAVS said goodbye to a long-standing member of staff. Sian Johnson, one of our Support Administrators, began working for CAVS in April 1999. She has always been a very positive team player, popular amongst her colleagues and with other members of the third sector and general public who have met her over the years. Goodbye and best wishes for the future Sian and thank you for your dedication to CAVS over the last 21 years.

We’re a youth movement that provide opportunities to 800 members between the ages of 10 and 26 that

live in Carmarthenshire. There are 23 Clubs in Carmarthenshire that are run by young people for young

people. The movement offers opportunities and special experiences for the members as they develop new

skills, receive valuable training, travel the world, become an integral part of the community and have the

opportunity to make friends for life.

As this awful virus has taken over, like many other Organisations, all our events and competitions have

been cancelled or postponed for the time being.

Since start of lockdown, Carmarthenshire YFC Clubs have actively offered support to their local communi-

ties during this uncertain time. The Clubs have been putting up posters around the community and their

local villages, on their social media pages and also put letters through the post to make sure the individu-

als in their local community that need support, can see the Clubs can support them in any way.

During these last few weeks, the members of the Organisation have been supporting members of their

local community by shopping for them, collecting medication and also a chat on the phone. Some mem-

bers have even donated food to their local food bank on a weekly basis, and even donated eggs to individ-

uals in the community. Many of our Clubs have also been showing their appreciation to all the frontline

workers in the NHS by clapping on their doorsteps every Thursday evening, and also there was a tractor

run making some noise to show their appreciation to the NHS staff and other Key workers.

We as an organisation take pride in the work that our members and our clubs continue to do in their local communities. If you, or someone you know, need help in any way, please contact us and I am positive we can support you. Phone: 01267 237693 Email: [email protected]

Volunteer feedback on Volunteering Wales Relating to: Covid 19 Carmarthenshire Field Hospitals.

Volunteers required to assist in setting up the furniture

and equipment in the 4 field hospitals between 14th and 17th

April 2020.

Recruiting volunteers to assist with well-being walks in Carmarthenshire is part of my role as Project Coordinator.

CAVS advised me to upload my volunteering opportunities onto Volunteer-ing Wales and I am delighted that 20 people have already registered their interest in be-coming Walk Leaders or Sup-port Buddies for the project.

Very pleasant and pro-fessional people running this project. They kept us busy and were very appreciative of the work we did. I was glad to make a contribution and would happily help out with them again.

It’s been a pleasure volunteering with the Staff from the NHS this week at Llanelli’s Bowls and Leisure centre. I gained immense satisfaction from be-ing part of a hard working team to achieve mutual goals. Let's hope that neither building receives a patient.

A unique opportunity contributing towards helping out in the community during the Covid19 pandemic. Everyone worked togeth-er and worked hard to complete the setting out of the field hospital in 1 day. Hopefully it will not be needed. I was both glad and hum-bled to be part of it.

Good team all helping with the COVID-19

Happy to volunteer my time during difficult times!

Why we were clapping for our Ellie

Ellie* has been with CYCA for approximately 15 months. Ellie was living in a women’s refuge with nothing to her name. She presented to CYCA with low mood, suicidal ideation, depression, NEET and Low income, presented as high risk of exploitation and social isolation due to breakdown of both family and peer relationships. CYCA created and provided a tailored package of support consisting of 1-1 men-toring, training, housing advice, and managing debt. Training was provided to support the attainment of qualifications and access to training to phase her back into a safe learning environment to explore further education and employment opportunities. The tailored resilience support and training enabled the young person to firstly build positive coping strategies with a trusted adult and enabled

her to manage a very chaotic and challenging period within her life. Once the 1-1 wellbeing and resilience support had been delivered and support offered to manage difficult emo-tions which consisted of outbursts of anger and strong feelings of abandonment and guilt, which impacted great-ly on her mental health and the ability to sustain any positive relationship. Training in basic knowledge of financial skills enabled her to manage housing, debt and manging her low income. Her low mood and anger started to lift and the YP began to excel in attending and achieving accredited training. The 1-1 training provided opportunities to ex-plore areas of interest and enabled her to build on her aspirations, confidence, motivation and to develop her communication and relationships skills to enable her to achieve her goal of em-ployment. Achieved education and training: • Level 1 Resilience and wellbeing, Level 1 Customer service, Food Hygiene, Get that Job, Applying for Jobs,

CV support, Interview techniques, Managing personal finances, Cooking on a budget, Digital safety and re-silience, Sexual health support

Additional Personal Outcomes from the support: • Wellbeing, aspirations and motivation improved, began to access training within a group to start Level 1

units within the Health and Social Care Award, attended a range of interviews, volunteered within the Charity, gained employment, Maintain housing, Improved income, attending further interviews to become a care worker

In April Ellie achieved her ultimate dreams, goals and aspirations by successful gaining employment within the Care Sector and startedb her induction on 6.5.20. We are super proud to have played an integral part in her jour-ney. The hard work and dedication to herself and to CYCA has changed Ellie’s life.

To quote Ellie: “I am chuffed to wear a uniform”.

Therefore, we were clapping for Ellie on a Thursday night! Da iawn!!

* Ellie is not her real name
