Our St. Paul Parish and School Capital Campaign

continues with pledges coming in from many parishioners. We are grateful to all who have been able to make a pledge. We are also

grateful to those who have considered the Campaign but prayerfully decided their personal financial situation does not allow them to make

a pledge at this time. We count on their prayers and hope in future years they may be able to help.

For those who have not yet decided on a pledge or a gift, please give

some thought this week to what you may be able to do to assist your parish community in meeting this responsibility to care for our school building. There are additional pledge/gift envelopes in the back of the church if you need an additional or a replacement. There are

also a few packets with the explanatory booklets and brochures if you did not

receive one in the mail. Any questions about the Campaign can be

directed to our Pastor, Fr. Larry Dorsch (304-748-6710).

WORK PROGRESS REPORT:

Even though we have not yet raised all the money needed, some work had to be started so that school could reopen in the

fall. All the fire doors have been removed, sandblasted and repainted.

The door jambs are in process of receiving the same treatment. The door hardware is either being refurbished or

replaced in compliance with the fire marshal's instructions.

In the cafeteria kitchen, the old exhaust

hoods have been removed and upon inspection it was discovered that the gas

range was leaking gas and has to be replaced and the old “coca cola” refrigerator had outlived its life as well. Thus, our costs for the refurbishing of the cafeteria will go up considerably beyond earlier estimates. New, brighter lighting will be installed in the cafeteria as well.

We have not yet sought nor received the go ahead from the diocese to begin work on the heating and cooling system of the school as we do not yet have enough money pledged to cover the cost of the contract. Fr. Larry will be consulting with Pastoral Council, Finance

Council and the Capital Campaign Committee next week to discuss next steps.

This week: The Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

2 Kings 4:42-44 Ephesians 4:1-6 John 6:1-15

Background: This week and continuing for six week, our Gospel reading will step away from the lectionary cycle text of Mark and go to the Gospel of John. Part of the reason is that Mark’s text is much sorter than the other Gospels and does not cover all the Sundays of the year. Thus, when Jesus and his disciples go off on their time of rest and find the vast crowd, there is a convenient place to shift into John where Jesus sees this crowd and undertakes the remarkable “sign” of the

loaves and the fishes. In John this event is not treated as a miracle but a “sign” pointing to who Jesus is. For five Sundays John’s Gospel will

explore this sign for us under the guise of the “Bread of Life.” Jesus will invite us to explore our deepest hungers, what we look to for the

satisfaction of these hungers and what the world offers for these hungers. This week consider who feeds you!

Next Week: The Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Exodus 16:2-4, 12-15 Ephesians 4:17,20-24; John 6:24-35

Adult Bible Study We will resume this Tuesday at 6:30 with our study of

the coming Sunday’s Gospel in the Parish Office Conference Room.

Annual St. Paul Parish Picnic August 23—11 am

As always we begin with our outdoor Sunday Mass, followed by dinner, socializing with fellow parishioners, games, wonderful desserts and music! Mark your calendar and plan to be part of our parish summer celebration!

Blessing the Fragments

by Jan Richardson

Cup your hands together,

And you will see the shape

This blessing wants to take.

Basket, bowl, vessel:

It cannot help

hold itself open

to welcome

what comes.

This blessing

knows the secret

of the fragments

that find their way

into its keeping,

the wholeness

that may hide

in what has been

left behind,

the persistence of plenty

where there seemed

only lack.

Look into the hollows

of your hands

and ask

what wants to be

gathered there,

what abundance waits

among the scraps

that come to you,

what feast

will offer itself

from the fragments

that remain.
