Welcome to the Adoptions Together community. Since 1990, we have been privi-leged to build, strengthen, and maintain connections for over 16,000 children and families. We look forward to deepening our connections with you and everyone in the community we serve. 2013 was a year of defining our strategic goals and corresponding plan to propel us through deepening outcomes for the next five years. We expanded and enhanced our partnerships to impact families, children and professionals who needed us; we refined and deepened our reach through programs to even more effectively deliver services consistent with current research and best practices; and we continued to strengthen our voice as a leader in advocating for permanency for all children. The fall of 2015 will mark our work as an agency for 25 years. As we move toward this banner year, we are excited to focus on our plan to double our impact by im-pacting the lives of 26,000 individuals and settling 6000 children with permanent families. This is a lofty goal and one that meets the rising needs of our community. We are excited, we are pre-pared, and we are ready to partner with you to meet or exceed this goal. If this is your first time learning about Adoptions Together during this exciting time, or you have been in our family for many years, we welcome you as a partner and friend. Please join us in impacting every child, every family, every step of the way. Sincerely, Janice Goldwater Founder, Executive Director and Dedicated Investor

real families A sibling trio unites

Naturally being the eldest, Rebecca has watched over her two younger brothers since the moment she became an older sister. Rebecca’s traumatic past haunts her dreams, impacts her ability to connect with caring and loving adults and her ability to succeed academically. Jeremy lives with his sister, Rebecca. Unfortunately the trauma in his past makes it hard for him to make friends and enjoy social situations. Frequently his sleep is interrupted by night terrors. Wyatt’s the youngest and lives with a different foster family. Loud noises and public bathrooms frighten little Wyatt to the point where he dissociates often. Similar to his siblings, he too experiences night terrors. Their childhoods were riddled with fear, trauma and bad dreams…. until they met their dads, James and David. After many visits, phone calls, emails and shared photos, Rebecca, Jeremy and Wyatt were ready to be one family in one home. Knowing the road to health and healing for each child was going to be tough and long, James and David found the best therapeutic and educational resources for the chil-dren. Now reality for each child looks far different. Rebecca is doing very well in school, she has made friends and she has adjusted to being in the role of “sister” rather than “parent”. Jeremy no longer has any problems sleeping and is able to talk and deal with his social anxieties with his parents and his therapist. Wyatt no longer dissociates and is now able to express himself more comfortably than he ever has before.

Like all school-aged kids they are busy deriving enjoyment and increased self-esteem through excelling in their numerous fun activities like Karate, baseball and dance. It is clear that all three children know what it means to be loved and are thriving in their one home, one family.

real impact A step toward love

Steven is one of four siblings in the process of being adopted by their foster parents. For years all the children have been living in instabil-ity as they have been moved from home to home, family to family. He feels enormous guilt, loss of “losing” his birth mom and internal-izes the blame for being separated from their mom and living in fos-ter care.

Recently, Steven’s therapist has been trying to find a meaningful activity for him to share his feelings. She picked a book off her shelf. As the pages of the book were opened, our therapist assumed the foster mom would read out loud but in-stead Steven took the lead. As Steven read the book, “Families Change – A book for children experiencing termination of parental rights”, his breath became short and his chin quivered. It was noticeable that what he was reading was emotion-ally hard. Steven’s foster mom held him tight and gently stopped him to ask if he had questions or wanted to stop during the tough parts. Steven quietly kept saying no with a determination to see how the story ended. In the final pages, Steven’s mom had him repeat the ending that reminded him that his birth parent loved him and changing families is not his fault, ever. Steven repeated the powerful sentence a few times, each time letting the newly found reality sink in a bit deeper- Steven’s family was growing.

Steven left with a big smile and his foster mom with a tear in the corner of her eye.

real connections

In January, Jay, a seventeen year old boy, met his birth mother, Tara, for the first time. As an infant Tara, then fourteen, decided adoption was the best option for Jay’s future. Intentions were set, plans were made for an open adoption. How-ever shortly after Jay was placed in the arms of his adoptive parents Tara’s parents prevented further communication. Tara was crushed knowing she would not be able to witness the childhood of her baby boy. Years passed with no connection, no communication but their story did not end. Last January Jay and Tara reconnected. Since reuniting, Tara and her husband have been in frequent contact with Jay and his parents, building a relationship that included Tara attending Jay’s high school graduation!

Adoptions Together recognizes the importance of family and connections. As the infants placed in adoptive families years ago mature into young men and women, Adoptions Together is shepherding adoptees and birth parents down the path of searching, locating and reconnecting with lost family.

A long awaited reunion

real change A family grows stronger

In April the Hyson family was turned upside down- the Hyson’s two boys were placed in foster care. Mom’s history of illegal drug use had led social workers to intervene on behalf of the safety and well-being of the boys. Dad was powerless to prevent the separation. Immediately an Adoptions Together’s mentor con-nected both Mom and Dad to community resources that would strengthen their individual lives and family life and began the process of navigating the path to reunification. Equipped with a referral from Adoptions Together’s mentor and committed to

making permanent, healthy change for herself and her family, mom entered a drug outreach program and began taking parenting classes through the local “Parent Encouragement Program”. She completed both successfully and voluntarily extended her drug outreach program in hopes of a deeper and long-lasting recovery. Dad was referred to wide range of resources including housing assistance, a vocation education and training program and parenting support groups. Immediately he began participating in the Fatherhood Initiative Program through East River Collaborative that is teaching him how to be a great father beyond providing financially for his family. Dad’s growth in his parenting skills and his ability to secure safe, stable housing enabled him to reunify with his boys only two and half months after they were initially removed; A process that normally takes 24-36 months or more in Washington, DC.

real stories A long journey to forever Nearly ten years ago Anthony was placed in the custody of Baltimore City Department of Social Services. His parents’ substance abuse and mental health challenges rendered them unable to provide adequate care, protection, and supervi-sion as well as a safe and stable home environment. In 2012, Anthony was referred to Adoptions Together’s Baltimore City project connecting older youth in care with per-manent family resources before aging out of foster care. Immediately, Adoptions Together’s team began the search for a possible family. After years of foster placements ranging from private family homes to diagnostic and residential care, Anthony remained hopeful for a family of his own. In 2012, Anthony transitioned into a pre-adoptive home with a family after his parents’ rights were terminated. The first few months went well but soon the family began to exhibit ap-prehension toward adopting Anthony. Ultimately this placement disrupted. Fueled by its passion to find families for every child, Adoptions To-gether continued its hunt to find Anthony a family. Shortly after An-thony’s dissolved adoption process, an Adoptions Together social worker discovered a couple who had already adopted two of An-thony’s siblings. She reached out and began a process that started with a meeting and progressed to Anthony’s official adoption in the summer of 2013. Anthony is thrilled to be living with his siblings.

24 ADOPTIONS TOGETHER 2013 ANNUAL REPORT | EVERY CHILD. EVERY FAMILY. EVERY STEP OF THE WAY.

We believe... About Children:

The welfare of the children who need our help comes first. Permanency in a healthy family is best for children. Children need to maintain connections with their birth families and cultures even when they cannot be safely raised in their birth family.

About Foster Care:

Foster care should be used as a last resort when a child cannot safely remain in his family. Stays in foster care should be as short as possible. Foster care should strengthen family ties, not weaken them. The first foster care placement should be the last foster care placement.

About Adoption: Adoption is the best option when a child cannot be safely raised or reunified with their birth families. Adoption is a life-long process. Openness and honesty is healthy for children and families. The ability to be a good adoptive parent does not depend upon wealth, race, religion, marital status, sexual preference or gender identity. Education, support and guidance from qualified adoption professionals before, during and after placement helps adopted children and their families succeed.

About Adoptions Together:

Commitment to mission and awareness of guiding principles are necessary for every staff member. Good financial health is required to accomplish our mission. Continuous improvement of programs and services requires knowledgeable, experienced and creative child-welfare professionals and staff. Racial, cultural, ethnic and religious diversity within the staff is essential for good decision-making. Direct and honest communication is the best way to prevent and resolve conflict.

our guiding principles
