January of the new year. The program is competency based and self paced like most Forbes adult programs. The objective

for students enrolling in this program is to obtain employment or additional training to advance in their current position.

Students will receive instruction to prepare for the Emissions and State Safety Certification exams.

Josh Krentz, the instructor chosen for the new program, attended Forbes

and completed the Collision Repair program while in high school. He was

a 2006 graduate of Forbes and continued his education at Universal Tech-

nical Institute in Houston, TX after receiving a $10,000 scholarship from

Automotive Youth Educational Systems or AYES and $3,000 from BMW of

North America. Josh returned to Forbes in 2010 to teach the evening

adult autobody courses for personal enrichment. He is employed at

Northern Westmoreland Career and Technology Center during the day where he is the Automotive Technology instructor.

He previously worked for Golden Eagle Equipment in sales for two years. He is excited to get started and pass on his

knowledge and expertise! For more information about the automotive programs at Forbes, please call 412-373-8100 x 223.

Forbes is proud to announce the hiring of two recent graduates who are now employed

as instructional assistants/substitute instructors. Bennett Shakoske and Erica Walstra,

adult students who attended daytime training programs, were hired in September.

Bennett Shakoske, a 2013 graduate of the daytime Heating, Ventilation, and Air

Conditioning program, was hired as an instructional assistant in the HVAC and Electrical

Technology programs. Ben is pleased to be working side by side with his former HVAC

instructor, Matt Bornak. He felt accepting this position would be a great way to become

a more skilled technician. Part of his responsibility as an

aide is to reteach a concept or theory in a lesson to

individual students when necessary. Although the task is

sometimes challenging, it is an advantage to Ben as well.

Ben enjoys sharing knowledge with others and states that this

experience has made him consider a future career as an instruc-

tor. He also hopes to find employment with a local HVAC

company in the near future where he can work evenings and

    weekends.

Erica Walstra was an adult student in the Building

Construction Technology program last year. She not onlytook advantage of every learning experience the class had

to offer, but also bonded well with students and other staff

members. Erica completed the course in June 2013 after

finishing several challenging projects, including the armoire

shown below. She was thrilled to be considered as an

instructional assistant working in the same program with her former instructor and

mentor, Jim Cristillo. Erica states that she tries to be mindful of the students needs and aims to

get all students engaged in the learning experience.

Ericas long term future goal is to have her own business where

she repurposes old furniture to create a more modern piece. Her

steady employment at Forbes allows Erica the opportunity to

refine her skills and make that dream happen. In the meantime,

Im sure she will be busy in the BCT shop with Mr. Cristillo and

    the students!

    Scalise

Financial LiteracyIn the spirit of looking ahead, Forbes Adult Training Coordinator, Christine Scalise, is preparing

a program for adult students to manage their money and responsibilities after graduation. Some

adult students accept a Direct Student Loan to complete training at Forbes. We are hoping to

provide financial literacy programs to help these students understand their payment obligations

    and how to manage them.

The first step was to find a partner with an already established financial literacy program. USA

Funds provides training for financial aid staff and has a proven history of offering current financial

aid information and updates in addition to clear and concise materials to offer students. The

program, Life Skills, is completed online with the option of including additional activities also

provided by USA Funds. Some of the topics covered include living on a budget while in school,

problems repaying student loans and how to find a job.

The next step is to have adult students enroll in the program and start the process of choosing at

least three courses to complete. Christine decided to introduce the financial literacy program to

the adult students in the second term, after adjusting to the school environment, the schedule and

the time commitment. Students will be scheduled times during the day to enroll, choose topics

    and complete the courses.

We are hoping to build on these experiences and help prepare our students in every way possible

for graduation. For more information about the USAFunds Life Skills financial literacy programs
