The month of May heralds a big change over in the world of safari

camps. Those camps that have been closed during the rainy

season, make their final preparations behind the scenes for the

new season.

This is particularly so in Zambia. The heavy rains make many of the

National Parks totally isolated due to vast wetlands expansion,

flooding of rivers and ultimately non-existent roads.

However, the after effects of this watery invasion, is the

most spectacular lush green burst of life, the

reappearance of huge numbers of animals and

the dusting off of safari vehicles ready for

this season’s safari enthusiasts.

RWANDA: THE FULL PICTURE

Whilst the Gorillas are of course the star attraction in Rwanda the country is far from a ‘one trick pony’, there is so much more to see and do in this remarkable country. When visiting Rwanda it would be a real shame to miss out on its two other national parks, the beautiful Lake Kivu and its experience aspects of its vast historical and cultural heritage.

Nkungwe National Park is located in South West Rwanda, Nyungwe is surely one of the world’s most beautiful and pristine mountain rainforests. It’s believed to be one of Africa’s oldest, staying green even through the Ice Age, which explains its diversity. Home to habituated chimpanzees and 12 other primates species including a healthy population of habituated Ruwenzori Black & White Colobus, it’s also a birder’s paradise with over 300 species, including 16 endemics.

Akagera National Park is located in the north east of Rwanda along the border with Tanzania, combining well with Nyungwe and the Volcanoes NP to create a great safari circuit, as it is home to many large plains game species as well as species restricted to the papyrus swamps such as the Sitatunga and the much sought-after Shoebill Stork.

Notable plains game include elephant, buffalo, topi, zebra, waterbuck, roan antelope and eland. Other antelope are duiker, oribi, bohor reedbuck, klipspringer, bushbuck and impala. Of the primates, olive baboons, vervets and the secretive blue monkey are seen during the day, with bush babies often seen on night drives.

Of the larger predators only leopard, hyaena and side-striped jackal are currently still present – but exciting plans are underway to reintroduce lions, as well as black rhino in 2015, which will restore Akagera’s ‘Big 5’ status, so watch this space!

Lake Kivu is one of the Africa’s Great Lakes, surrounded by magnificent mountains and has deep emerald green waters. The lake is dotted with often uninhabited islands and from both land and water, the scenery is simply stunning.

It provides the perfect location to relax and enjoy lakeside recreation during a tour of Rwanda. With a surface area of some 2730 km2, Lake Kivu sits at al-most 1500m above sea level. Perfectly safe to swim in, the water has a warm temperature of 23-27o all year round. Sports and activities include fishing, swimming, kayaking, canoeing and boat rides.
