END OF YEAR MASS & BBQ – FRIDAY 5PM
We invite all parents to join with the children for the period of the mass rather than make alternate arrangements after drop off. This will be Father Varghese’s first mass with our school community and your warm welcome is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your support and understanding.
WELL DONE CAMPERS on your exceptional behaviour whilst away on camp. Despite the Year 3s operating on
limited sleep and experiencing Mr Barnhoorn’s ‘Boot Camp’ as a result, they all had such an amazing time away at the zoo sleepover. I thank Miss Brennan, Mr Barnhoorn, Mrs Pascoe and Mrs Mackie for offering up their time and energy in making this such a memorable time for our students.
Our Year 4s had an equally special time away on camp, spread over two nights at Queenscliff. The feedback from all quarters suggests that the children were exemplary in their manner and had an ‘awesome’ time. For many families, having their child/ren away for a night or two changed the family dynamic considerably. I’m sure all was quickly restored upon their safe return. I sincerely thank Miss Ryle, Miss O’Dowd and Mrs Quitt for their dedication, energy and precious time whilst away from school and family. A very special mention to the three dads who supported the staff and children on camp: Mark Brady, David Williams and Scott Nobel. Your time and enthusiasm in making this such a positive experience for our children was so greatly appreciated.
REPORTS
Congratulations staff (and students) on your exceptional reports. Once again this has been a most affirming process for Mrs Moore and me as we have read and acknowledged over 290 reports. I have been so very impressed at how well our staff know their children. Over the years, I have noted the personal and professional manner in which these reports have been written. Whilst we have mandated requirements with student reports, my staff have been able to thoughtfully personalize these reports and highlight the personal investment and relationships established with their students over the year. This is not characterized in all school settings. All school reports will be finalized in the coming days and sent home in sealed envelopes.
MONDAY – SCHOOL CLOSURE DAY
What a fabulous day on Monday! The staff worked enthusiastically and solidly throughout day. They unpacked the SRC surveys, reviewed the school Annual Action Plan, analysed all academic data, mapped student needs and handed over student information for 2016. This was timed to the minute to ensure we kept moving and covered the extensive agenda. This annual closure day is the most valuable in our year as we review and analyse all data sets and plan for the following school year. The more staff input and shared ownership, vision and understanding of this data and planning, the greater value we add to our school improvement. Well done staff! I’m pleased to acknowledge the impressive academic data and student gains made in 2016.
MOVING UP DAY!
Today we celebrated as all students transitioned up to their new classrooms. Whilst many danced and bounced through the gates in anticipation this morning, this can sometimes be an anxious step for some. Surprisingly though, it can be an even bigger step for some parents. We value this process in readiness for the following school year and spend a ‘significant’ amount of time structuring these classes for the next year. Our children respond well to this special day and it can sometimes provide another opportunity to build greater resilience and indeed grow and forge new relationships. Perhaps we do not give our children enough credit regarding their capacity to manage this change. We have moved away from the common practice (in most schools) of notifying families on the last day, but rather celebrate the professional decisions and trust established within our community. Our staff are exceptional educators and we always place the child at the heart of our decisions in order to create the best possible learning environment. I’m so pleased to confirm all students and staff had a terrific morning. A sense of calm, topped with many smiles and happy faces.
We warmly welcome Mrs Sargent to Year 4 and Mr Hartney to Year 5. Both teachers were at the closure day on Monday and valued the handover process. Mrs Martin will pop in next Monday and Tuesday to spend some time with the children and staff.
I encourage all families to be positive this evening and in the coming days to ensure momentum is maintained for 2016.
MUSIC 2016
How impressive to see Miss Angie and Mrs Quinn well into the swing of things for 2016 sorting out instruments, resources and creative ideas for next year. This bodes so well for our children. I think the ladies have grand musical plans for our children.
CANDY CANES
In the interests of dental hygiene, we ask that you do not purchase candy canes that generally accompany the many thoughtful Christmas cards. Sugar and excessive waste is often the by-product, whilst a card is a healthier alternative. In appreciation of your understanding for this otherwise thoughtful gesture.
Look forward to drawing upon your energy and positivity as we wind up the year in the coming weeks, Simon Collis Principal
Dear Parents,
During the final couple of weeks of the term we are starting to implement the final key message of the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum: Report. This means that when children or young people have been in a situation that is unsafe that they are taught to report what has happened to an adult. Even if a child has been able to make themselves safe, it is vital that they still report what has happened. Adults need to know about unsafe situations so that some action can be taken to help the child be safe again or ensure it doesn’t happen again.
Students involved in the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum will be encouraged to make a list of adult safety helpers. These are adults the children and young people nominate whom they can talk to when they are feeling unsafe or have experienced an unsafe situation or feel they are at risk of something that may cause them harm. This list will include a selection of adults who live in and outside the home.
‘Report’ also includes telling an adult about unsafe or inappropriate incidents which may occur when children or young people are online. This might occur when surfing the net or using social media sites like Facebook and Instagram, and can include cyberbullying, viewing or receiving inappropriate images or messages or communicating with unknown contacts.
It is important that the key safety messages of the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum: Recognise, React and Report are reinforced, both at school and home. I encourage you, wherever possible, to talk with your child about safety to help them stay safe now and in the future.
Yesterday, at our staff planning day, all teachers made a special mention of the Daniel Morcombe program, and the impact on our students. We plan to teach a shortened ‘reminder’ version of the program in Term 4 of 2016, and then roll out the full program once again in 2017. Have a great week, Michelle Moore [email protected]
As you know, we shall be
starting a Music program in
2016. Whilst we have a good
base of untuned percussion
instruments, we have very
few tuned instruments. If
you have, or know where we
can get, instruments such as
keyboards, xylophones or
guitars, please let either
Miss Angie or Mrs Lizbeth
Quin know. Many thanks.
FROM THE DEPUTY’S DESK
YEAR 4 CAMP
Religious Education and Faith Dear Families,
Today marks the Feast of the Immaculate Conception which celebrates that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was born without sin. This feast day also begins the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy which offers acceptance forgiveness and hope to all people. END OF YEAR MASS Our mass is on Friday 11th December beginning at 5pm. To ensure that we start promptly we ask that students are dropped off to the school atrium by 4.45 so that they can assemble with their class and sit together throughout the mass. Students are asked to wear school uniform to the mass with a touch of red or green to acknowledge the festive season. As this is a family celebration it is expected that parents attend the mass with their children. During this mass we will farewell students, families and staff leaving our community and also present the Year 6 student leaders for 2016. Parents, could you please talk to your children about some of the changes that they will notice during this mass, particularly that Fr Varghese will process into the church during the opening hymn and will also leave the church part way through the recessional hymn. Those attending the mass should not leave until after the priest has processed from the church. Previously, these aspects of the mass have not occurred as a result of Fr Ross’ mobility. CHRISTMAS EVE FAMILY MASS - 24th December @ 6.30pm Our traditional Christmas Eve mass will be held at 6.30pm. Prior to the beginning of mass, carols will be sung from 6.15pm onwards. If you would like to be a part of the choir please email me and I will provide you with any practise times and dates. We hope to see you there. Kind regards, Peta Overbury Religious Education Leader Email: [email protected]

ST. JOSEPH’S SPELLATHON
What a “Spell-tacular” Effort!!
We are in the process of counting the Spellathon sponsorship money
and it is taking a great deal of time which bodes well for our literacy resources next year! Just a
reminder that all Spellathon money needs to be returned - The prizes for the most money raised by
individuals and class will be finalised Wednesday 9th December. The winners will be announced at Friday
assembly.
BUG CLUB and HOLIDAY READING
Just a reminder that we strongly encourage all students to continue to read for pleasure over the
holidays. We are aware that for some parents the difficulty is tearing their child away from a book,
however, for others just getting their child to read ‘anything’ is a challenge. However it is a case of
“Use it or Lose it”! This is particularly pertinent to those who are still consolidating their reading
skills. “A recent study found that children's reading for pleasure outside school had a significant impact on
their educational attainment and social mobility. Moreover, it found that this impact is a function of
what the researchers termed "increased cognitive progress over time." Reading for pleasure outside
of school has real and long-lasting benefits. The research from the British Cohort Study encourages
students' out-of-school reading—regardless of which genres and authors they choose.
If teachers and parents are to pursue a policy of supporting and encouraging the pleasure reading of
young people, they must develop a deep understanding of its nature and varieties. They must avoid
dismissing the reading kids like to do in the hope that kids will read something "better." (Education
Week, Jan 22, 2014)
For all students, especially the reluctant readers, I recommend graphic novels, newspapers, kids
magazines, cartoons, comic books from the newsagency. The Billy B Brown or Hey Jack series are
excellent chapter books for early readers (yr. 1+2). For the middle years the Roald Dahl Collection
or Andrew Griffith’s “Storey Treehouse collection”. “Skulduggery” series for the more advanced
upper primary. Don’t forget stories on CD for long car trips or for listening to at night time. Also
don’t forget to read to your child. All our students right up to Year 6 have all indicated that they
still love being read to!
Bug Club is still available over the holidays. All you need to do is login www.pearsonplaces.com.au
All children (Prep - Year 3) know their login and password and they have books allocated to them. If
this needs updating, let your child’s classroom teacher know. Bug club can be used on Ipads and
Android devices. This is excellent for the holidays as it is portable! The website below outlines the
features Bug Club has to offer. The holidays may be a good time to familiarise yourself with its
potential. http://www.pearsonplaces.com.au/portals/0/alp/Active%20Learn%20Help_Student.pdf
Also if you are having difficulty getting bug club to work on ipads, it is generally connected to the
pop up settings. The link below gives you information on how to adjust the settings so bug club can
be enabled.

AGM
Thank you to everyone who made 2015 such a successful fundraising year. We set ourselves a target of $30,000, which we exceeded. In a non-fete year it isn’t always easy to achieve lofty fundraising targets, but we have raised close to $40,000, which is fantastic. Congratulations to the newly nominated P&F committee for 2016.
It is fantastic to have some new faces stepping into the roles. A big thank you to this year’s committee members: Kadi Morrison, Sheridan Younan, Liz Glen and Conce Ferraro who are stepping down. Class reps will be appointed at the first P&F meeting of Term 1 2016. Please let one of the Kates know if you are interested in one of these roles.
TUCKSHOP
For the last Wednesday of the year that Tuckshop is operating, Wednesday 9 December, our main tuckshop ladies will be on duty: Amber Sanderson, Kellie Bird, Penny Szatmary, Rachel Vise and Sherelle Fyfe.
