Newaye-Mariam Abstract:The above, a 38-year-old Ethiopian refugee in Djibouti, was arrested by Djiboutian

police in a refugee camp on 17 August 1996. He has not been seen since. There are reports that he has been handed over to the Ethiopian authorities and that he is currently in detention at an unknown location in Ethiopia, despite being a refugee registered by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Hatungimana, Daniel Kabura, Protais Nzohabonimana, Hilaire Hicuburundi, Michael Kabavamwo and about 82 others sentenced to death since February 1996: AI has received reports that on 9 August 1996, Firmat Niyonkenguruka, sentenced to death on 24 June 1996, and five others on death row named above were transferred to a special cell in Mpimba prison in Bujumbura. The separation took place a day after civil servants meeting government ministers had demanded the public hanging of prisoners on death row. There are also fears that they may be subjected to torture.

Abstract:Since the release without charge of Ngarlegy Yorongar, a leader of the opposition

party Action Front for the Republic-Federation, on 16 July 1996 he is reported to have received a number of serious threats from members of the Chad security forces in N'Djamena. He is also believed to have been ill-treated and threatened while in detention in Bebedjia by members of the Gendarmerie.

There are unconfirmed reports that Sergeant Garni Adam and Idriss Gassi were extrajudicially executed by members of the National Security Agency of Chad on 3 August near the border town of Adre in Chad.

Albert Mukesha Batwaro and 49 other men Abstract:The above, a 20-year-old Rwandese man, is one of a group of about 103 people who

were illegally removed from Spain in mid-June. He and 49 other men, 14 from Cameroon, six from Guinea-Conakry, five from Liberia, 21 from Nigeria and one each from the Central African Republic, Mali and Togo, were taken to Guinea-Bissau. They are being held in the Second Squadron prison in Bissau, where some have been subjected to severe beatings. AI fears that they may be forcibly repatriated to their own countries without any opportunity to seek asylum and to have these claims fairly reviewed. Albert Mukesha Batwaro had sought asylum in Spain and was awaiting a decision when he was expelled.

Mamadou Barry and Abubacar Sall, all from Guinea-Conakry, and other African nationals: On 12 August 1996, Albert Mukesha Batwaro and 44 other men of various African nationalities held in in the Second Squadron prison in Bissau, went on hunger-strike in protest at the way they have been treated by the Spanish and Guinea-Bissau authorities. Many of the detainees were already weak and some of them fell ill and had to be taken to hospital. Amnesty International is calling on all relevant authorities to address their legitimate grievances as they did not have adequate opportunity to present their claims for asylum in Spain before being forcibly removed to Guinea-Bissau.

Abstract:Alhaja Kudirat Abiola (f), aged 44, businesswoman, Moshood Abiola, aged 58, winner of 1993 presidential elections and new names: Alhaji Ganiyu Dawodu, aged 63, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, aged 69, former Senator Abraham Adesanya, aged 74: AI believes that three senior members of the National Democratic Coalition, arrested in connection with the murder of Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, are prisoners of conscience detained on account of their non-violent political views. The three remain in detention, uncharged and in conditions seriously prejudicial to their health, despite a court ruling ordering their release.

Bayo Onanuga is believed to be held by the State Security Service at their Lagos headquarters in Shangisha. No official reason has been given for the arrest of the two men but it may have been in connection with articles critical of the government published by the press group.

Since the beginning of 1996 at least 20 USO leaders and members are reported to have been threatened, either by telephone, or in writing by paramilitary groups.

The organization has also learned of further arrests, including the detention of Dr Tjiptaning who had helped to treat the wounded after the security forces raided the PDI office. Wahyu Widyanarko is believed to have been released.
