Social Media Posts Russ Lane

I have recently seen some disparaging remarks about our Camp and our members on social media. The re-marks had to do with our talking about being the largest camp in Texas and the perceived lack of participation in various events by our membership. Airing such concerns on a public forum is inappropriate and serves no useful purpose. Such concerns should be addressed to the camp leadership or the entire membership. Bet-ter yet, instead of complaining about the lack of participation, provide some positive ideas on how to improve participation. I can tell you the camp leadership has been wrestling with this issue for some time now. I believe that most organizations, especially volunteer organizations, operate by the Pareto Principle or the 80/20 Rule. In other words, 80% of the effort is provided by 20% of the members. I believe that applies to our camp and there are a number of reasons for that being true.

Here are some details about our membership that most may not know. We currently have 176 members, 15 Friends and 8 Cadets. These people are spread over 14 states. We have 26 members in 13 states other than Texas (15%); we have 72 members in 38 Texas communities other than San Antonio (41%); and 77 members with San Antonio addresses (44%). About 50% of our members reside in locations where it makes it impossible for them to participate in camp activities. There are many other reasons people may not partici-pate in various activities; age, health, career field, working, raising kids, traveling, prior plans before being aware of an event, lack of interest in a particular activity, and so on. Not everyone has the same interests, abilities or passions. All we have ever asked of our members is that they do what they can when they can. Some members who are not active for one reason or another have made significant monetary contributions to our camp. Many may not attend meetings or events for some reason but they write letters, send emails, and make phone calls when asked to do so. Others forward interesting or educational materials to share with our membership. Some write letters to the editor. Some conduct research on different issues and others stay in touch with their representatives at various levels of government. We have enough enemies outside our organization. We do not need agitation and turmoil within the camp or SCV. Let’s all look for ways to improve participation, educate ourselves and others and continue to grow our organization.

Local United Daughters of the Confederacy chapter sues the city over statue removal

by SBG San Antonio | Wednesday, October 25th 2017 SAN ANTONIO — The local chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy is suing the city and other city leaders for the removal of a monument dedicated to fallen Confederate soldiers in September. Council members voted in favor of donating the statue to a non-profit organization that may preserve the monument for educational purposes.

The now-disbanded Barnard E. Bee chapter, or the Albert Sidney Johnston No. 2060 chapter, says the statue is their property and claim they did not get their legal right to challenge the decision of its removal. The suit says the chapter had ownership of the statue at Travis Park throughout the entire process and never gave or donated the statue to another entity. The group claims the city never responded to their requests to discuss the statue's future and have no idea where the statue is nor the condition. It also says the statue was damaged during the removal process and it does not know where the time capsule buried below the statue containing several historical items is, accord-ing to the lawsuit. The group says they were denied their due process and not given just compensation for their damaged prop-erty. The group seeks the return of the statue, or compensation for the loss of its claimed property, damages, declaratory and injunctive relief and coverage of attorney's fees. [Editor’s note: The article can be found on the News4 San Antonio website. Here there is a link to the actual document issued by the UDC and the attorney. http://news4sanantonio.com/story/local-united-daughters-of-the-confederacy-chapter-sues-the-city-over-statue-removal]
