Shooting a painting is exacting work
I did a trade with Ben Friday a friend of mine. We traded his special web
design skills to change my home page with my services for some glossy 13” x 19” prints using my exhibition quality Epson printer.
Ben is fantastic and really knows his business. This is his address http://www.fridaydesign.com if you want to go have a look at his web page.
Ben lives in Nanaimo and I live here, so how does he get the large photo files to me. He used a file transfer service called ‘Hightail’. Hightail will let you transfer files photo or text of up to 250mb for free. This is their address: https://www.hightail.com. Another service that I have used is
“Dropbox”, which will let you transfer files— photo or text—up to 2.25 GB for free. They say “Lets you bring all your photos, docs, and videos anywhere”. This is their address. https://www.dropbox.com/home.
Of course both Hightail and Dropbox have paid plans to upgrade the service, but I find the free plan adequate for my purposes.
Last month I photographed some acrylic and watercolour paintings; what an elaborate setup it is to properly photograph such paintings. Here is how I did it; for the black background I used Staples “trifold foam board” in black. For the base I used a black artist board then a small easel was placed on the artist board and that was covered by a heavy black fabric.
As for camera placement, I measured the distance from the side wall to what would be the center of the painting and placed the tripod and camera at that same distance so that the center of the painting would be in the center of the viewfinder.
Using a spirit level I leveled the camera so that there wouldn’t be a skewed photograph of the painting. Are you still with me? Don’t nod off now, there’s more.
I placed the two “X” strobes at 45 degrees to the painting and five feet from the center of the paintings. Then I used my flash meter to determine the exposure and carefully placed the painting on the easel. At the
bottom of the painting I put an 18 per cent grey/white card so that I could easily match the colours of the painting when I would be printing the photographs.
With the camera in “manual” mode I set the 18 ~ 70mm lens at 52mm so that the painting would fill my viewfinder, the ISO at 200, the aperture at f8 (the reading from the flash meter), the shutter speed at 1/125 of a
second (even though my flash synchs at 1/250th) so that no extraneous light would be recorded. Using an electronic cable release I fired off a shot.
I got some ugly glare on the painting, so I moved the lights to about a 50 degree angle, fired off a shot, and—perfect.
Yes please, try this at home.
Last September I made a batch of Slivovitz brandy using the plums from our plum tree. It had to mature for three months, until Dec. 24.
On that day we strained the fruit out and put it in a container and then passed around some shot glasses full of the stuff. Wowee! Potent.
One last thing before I go…I am now two years and one month cancer free.

◆ COVER STORY
Youth gives birthday cash to SPCAKATYA SLEPIAN
ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
Donating his birthday money to the Port Alberni SPCA was an easy choice for Mason Maddison.
“I sort of already have everything and I really like animals,” said Maddison, who donated $236 that was given to him as gifts to the SPCA earlier this month.
Donating his birthday money wasn’t Maddison’s first time helping out animals in need.
The 12-year-old adopted both of his pets from the SPCA.
He has had Oscar, a four-year-old pitbull-boxer-mastiff cross, and Timothy, a seven-year-old Maine coon tabby, since they were five months old.
Helping animals is a
cause close to Maddison’s heart and he aspires to keep doing it his whole life.
“I thought of being a vet for a little bit but now I want to be a conservation
officer.”But for now, he’s
just hoping to start volunteering with the SPCA when he’s old enough.
Environmental lawyer, Anna Johnston, of West Coast Environmental Law will discuss recent changes to Canada’s environmental laws at a presentation sponsored by Alberni Valley Transition Town Society and the Watershed Forest Alliance.
The event will take place Wednesday, Jan. 14, at 7 p.m. in the basement of Abbeyfield. Local organizations
will be on hand with information about projects of relevance to Port Alberni including the Raven Coal Port proposal presently in an environmental assessment process. All are invited and encouraged to attend.
Changing regulations have an impact on the ability of local citizens to protect water, land, and air. Water quality is a topic of importance in the Alberni Valley right now due to
concern about the cumulative effects of logging in and around the drinking water supply and the potential impact that could have on the ecosystem. Quality water is also needed for local agriculture.
Recent earthquake activity was another reminder of the of the need for food security and the fact that only between five and 10 per cent of the food that’s eaten in the Alberni Valley is grown here.
Lawyer speaks on environment at Transition Town presentationKids are up to snow good
On Jan. 5, 2015 my children received something I always wanted as a kid but never got: a snow day.
“Wouldn’t it be cool if school is cancelled tomorrow?” my 14-year-old son had asked as he watched the flurry of flakes falling outside our living room window on the last Sunday of the winter break.
“Keep dreaming,” I said. “My brother and I used to wish for the same thing and it never happened.”
Monday morning, on their first scheduled day back after their two-week hiatus from school, I was anxious to have the house to myself.
I woke Sam and Daisy up, fed them breakfast and made their lunches.
As my husband shovelled the driveway for the fourth time in the last 24 hours, I started the truck and the kids got dressed.
“Chelsey said school is cancelled,” my 11-year-old daughter said excitedly as I walked back inside.
Skeptical, I looked online at a local news site to prove that her friend’s text must be mistaken.
“The superintendent says they haven’t declared a snow day in 35 years,” I read from the report. “So unless there’s a major power outage or road closures, schools will be open as usual.”
Daisy looked disappointed.
“Jake said school’s cancelled!” Sam said, bounding up the stairs with a big grin on his face.
“It’s not,” his little sister grumbled. And then Sam looked bummed out as well.
With my boots and coat still on, I decided I’d better double check with the Central Okanagan School District’s website before we left in the truck.
To my surprise the site announced a district-wide snow day. After reading the report aloud I stood there in shock as my kids did the happy dance.
When I shared the notice on my Facebook page the reaction was mixed. Some were as stunned as I was, others said they saw it coming and a few thought it
was ludicrous. “We treat our kids
today like fine china,” wrote one friend who grew up in a much snowier area with no sidewalks during the ‘50s when they had to walk to school during blizzards.
“Give me a break. It’s time for kids to face the inevitable of life’s challenges, such as a snowfall.”
But if enough roads and sidewalks weren’t plowed and the school district’s superintendent deemed it unsafe enough to call for a snow day, I was okay with that.
About an hour later, while Sam, Daisy and our dogs played in a foot and a half of the fluffy white stuff in the back yard, I called my father to ask him if he’d ever had a snow day.
He hadn’t either, but he did remember
the winter of 1964 when he and my mom were in grade 10 and the dress code at their public school in North Vancouver was temporarily altered.
“It was freezing cold so the girls didn’t have to wear skirts or dresses that week,” he said.
“But our principal announced on the intercom that even though they were allowed to wear slacks during the storm, they still had to wear their girdles underneath.”
For better or worse times have definitely changed. I believe keeping our kids safe and attempting to equalize the genders are both positive steps in a preferable direction.

KidSport benefitsKidSport is a couple
of thousand dollars richer to start the new year, thanks to a pair of fundraisers.
KidSport teamed up with the city to collect used Christmas trees over two days at the AV Multiplex parking lot. Trees were dropped off by donation, and were taken away by city
workers to be chipped for compost at the public works yard.
Approximately $1,700 was collected as well as 200 trees, KidSport representative Ron Doetzel said.
Quality Foods held a fundraising barbecue for Alberni Valley Bulldogs’ fans and raised $320.
